Almost pulled the trigger on this, but I just can't buy the current mirrorless offering after seeing the 70D announcement. That sensor tech seems designed for mirrorless, just can't buy the last gen tech on this one. There's a reason they're selling them off for such a low price.

And maybe within a couple weeks. I'd probably have gone for it if the 70D hadn't been introduced.

A 20mpx EOS-M body is looking very likely in the next few weeks I'd think.  I'm still of the opinion that we will see a gradual expansion of the range to three models, with the current M being the mid range benchmark.  Perhaps a Mx using the new 20mpx sensor in the same chassis and a plastic bodied version of the 18mpx M sensor

New firmware has made a big improvement, really looking forward to seeing some more EOS-M lenses with a second / replacement body most of all ;-)

This is REALLY a great buy and the EOS-M is a great pocket camera with the 22mm lens.  I just bought this package less than 30 days ago and just now called B&H who is refunding me the difference in the cost: about $189.00.

Thanks for posting this. It really paid off.

I picked up the EF adapter for $69 previously and can use my other Canon and Zeiss lenses with this small body. :D

I am not really interested in the EOS M line.  I currently own a nex6 and am vary happy with it.  It is great for travel I have been carrying it as an every day with the power zoom.  The problem is the power zoom kinda sucks image quality wise.  So I was thinking of getting the 20mm pancake for everyday use.

This deal was is cheaper than the Sony 20mm pancake and the 22mm has had excellent reviews it is also a faster lens.  So it is really hard to pass up.

So I pulled the trigger and ordered one.  The nex has been moved to vacation duty and the M will likely be the camera thrown in the backpack everyday.

That said I do not see me buying many M lens until the system matures a great deal.  For vacation duty I will need a dedicated build-in EFV and a flash.

Considering the lens itself is $216 on Amazon right now, this looks like a no-brainer for anyone expecting to get any future EOS-M bodies. It basically makes this body, with new faster firmware, about $83. Not bad for essentially the same guts as the T4i!

Could this mean they are coming out with a new version of the EOS M?
And maybe within a couple weeks.

Worth noting that the Canon USA Online Store lists it as Not Available.  Edit: that probably means nothing - I just noticed that the EF-M lenses are also listed as N/A, and even if an EOS M II comes out tomorrow, the lenses aren't going to be updated.

As for a new version being announced in a couple of weeks...buy it at this amazing price and don't open it.  B&H has a 30-day return period...

Even after that, the price will go back up...it's over $400 everywhere else right now.  I'd bet it could be sold lightly used for the $300 it costs today, meaning no net loss.

As for me, I just ordered one.  I'm certain we'll see an EOS M II at some point (possibly at some point soon), using the sensor in the 70D.  But for me, the EOS M isn't going to be an everyday camera, or even an occasional use camera.  It's going to be a backup camera, pure and simple.  For that purpose, this deal is too good to pass up...

Recent completed listings on eBay for used cameras w/ the 22mm in great condition (incl box, etc) went for right around $400. This seems like a safe buy - even if the new camera comes out, it will be closer to the launch price of this one.

As neuroanatomist said, BH return policy is pretty solid, you can always send it back.

Call me crazy, but I just bought 5 of each (22mm and 18-55mm kits).  After the promotion on July 9th, the price will be back up and I'll sell them on eBay or Amazon Used section.  Even at that, the lenses themselves are worth $200-$300 each.

To me, this signals the introduction of a new EOS M camera VERY soon.

Also, for anyone interested, I've called both B&H and Adorama to see if they would put together a package deal for the camera and both lenses, neither one would do it.  However, there is one WHITE BOX version of each lens on Amazon.com to be had, fairly cheap.  The least expensive way to get it would be to get the 22mm lens bundled with the camera and then buy the 18-55 for $133 (total price, $432 shipped for the EOS M, 22mm, and 18-55 IS).

I've been wavering back and forth on it but decided not to pull the trigger.  Not sure why and I'll probably regret it later...  haha!

I picked up the EOS-M with 22mm from Amazon for a good price a few weeks ago (not this good, but not bad).

Now, I'm tempted to get this one with the 18-55mm just to get the lens.  The lens typically runs around $250 to $350 with a body isn't bad.

Got one from B&H. White was backordered but black was still available.

I have two FF bodies now, but sometimes I wanted the extra reach of a crop for times when I want to shoot the supermoon, etc. Been looking at refurbished Rebels but they're not cheap. Now the M will be perfect for that purpose, plus I can use it as my take anywhere cam with a large sensor.

Dude, aren't you the least bit curious about the 22mm lens? I've been wanting to test in since they released it but I refused to buy the EOS M just to try the lens.  At this price, & w/ the new firmware upgrade, you can resell the body only (after FULLY testing it) to cover the $299 & pocket the lens for the next generation.

Okay, I talked too much and convinced myself. "Powershot" or not, here I come....

Can't lose with this price. Like Neuro says when your main body acts funny you can pull an eos-M out of your pocket and still throw your favorite lenses on it and shoot with image quality similar to current generation Canon crop bodies. Try doing that with a powershot.

I'm not sure I'd buy it for $99, as I can't figure out what I'd do with it.

I think i'm the same way myself.  I seriously considered the deal for a few minutes, but it just doesn't seem to fit my needs as far as i can tell.  What would i do with it?  A small fixed-lens camera just isn't real useful for me, and once you put a zoom lens (plus adapter?) on the thing, it's not tiny anymore.  Certainly not the sort of thing i could easily fit in my pocket.

Wow, great deal.  I wasn't really even considering one of these, but I had to pull the trigger at this price.

I currently use a Powershot S100 as a pocket camera for when I don't want to or can't carry a DSLR.  The S100 is OK, but IQ is limited and controls difficult to use.  The EOS-M will have much better IQ and the ability to use all my EF lenses.  Pretty cool.

Tried to pull a fast one and get it at Best Buy using their "price match" thing.  They don't stock it in store though  :'(

This price seems too low for Canon... even if a new one with the new AF system, higher resolution/better everything came out.  This price seems like an "F it" move that could only be appropriate if the eos M is going extinct already... or is that me overreacting...

Is it possible that a new mirrorless camera could come with the EF mount standard?

I find it interesting that so many people here bought it with the possible intention of selling it on, despite its widely known flaws (and please do not tell me there are none, I have seen it in action, and Canon issued a FW update to address some of them, and looks like they are now going to launch a brand new version to correct them all!).

What makes you think the price will go up, especially if Canon does launch a new M? I cannot see the price going up at all.

Still, sounds like there are a lot of happy campers here on CR right now, so congrats on the new purchase.

I won't be buying one, but I do look forward to hearing about the possible new M, and could there be some new lenses to go with it too....  8)

I hope you wrong expatinasia, about new M + lenses. This could be the most expensive P&S that I ever purchased..........wait the mins, my most expesive P&S camera should be my RX-1 ;)

For $300...I don't think this is bad deal at all.

The 70-200 II had been selling at $2400, then in Dec 2012 it dropped by $500, and IIRC, Adorama sold it even cheaper for a few days.  The price went up - it's still cheaper than $2400, but >$300 more than the nadir.

I think the steep discount, combined with the facts that we're fast approaching the 1-yr anniversary of the EOS M announcement (late July, 2012) and that the M is a consumer camera and the Rebel/xxxD line has been getting annual updates, as well as the 70D's sensor, which is almost tailor-made for mirrorless, means that we'll see an M II announcement pretty soon.

But this really is a great price - as I said, it should be possible to sell it down the line for little loss. An M II will be far more expensive for a while.

Canon just released a UWA zoom for the M.  An M with an EF mount would be giving up the thinner depth that eliminating the mirror gives, it's not going to happen.

So does the M with the 22mm f2 depth of field behave like a f2 lens? Or is it still like all crops and less shallow?

It's an APS-C sensor - so the 22mm f/2 is equivalent to a 35mm f/3.2 lens on FF.

I find it interesting that this lens being made specifically for the M is still marketed with a FF focal length.  This lens cant be used on any other camera so why did they decide to spec 22mm f/2?  This is not really what you get with the camera in use.

Sounds like maybe grounds for a class action law suit.  I got 100 bucks back from John Deere because they underspec'd the engine on my lawn tractor!

This deal is too good to pass up. I've paid more than $300 for a P&S. Of course, I also had to pick up the adapter (white box $119), and of course for more versatility I had to get the 18-55 (white box $131). Naturally I got filters for the 2 lenses Thankfully I have a 270EX lying around so I don't have to pick up the 90. So now I'm up to $630, but at least I'm ready for pretty much anything except wildlife. Well rural wildlife anyway.

Perhaps this is the whole point.

After making no effort to market this camera in the U.S., they suddenly decided they could sell a boatload of ancillary stuff if they essentially gave the camera away.

I know I can't consider buying it without the EF lens adapter. I suspect few people are buying the camera and attached lens and nothing else. And if they aren't buying extras today, the future looms.

Why? Because focal length is an intrinsic property of the lens.  With the 22mm pancake lens, the physical distance between the rear nodal point and the image plane is 22mm (with the lens focused at infinity).  That's the definition of focal length. The sensor behind the lens, the flange focal distance, what bodies are compatible or not, none of that matters.  If Canon were to print an 'APS-C corrected focal length' (e.g. 35mm on the EF-M 22mm pancake), that would be a lie (so they'd have to print 'FF equivalent' or something on the lens as well).

But you can try to sue Canon if you want...maybe spend that hundred bucks on a shyster who'll be happy to part you from your money.  I'm sure Canon would get a nice chuckle from the effort...   ::)

Does anyone know if this camera has a minimum shutter speed setting? And does its auto-ISO work properly?

Since it has no stabilisation, if I give it to my kids to use, I want to be sure that it doesn't drop the shutter speed too low in low light, but instead can adjust the ISO as needed. I'm teaching them photography, and my DSLR is a little heavy. But it's also an older DSLR (500D), and doesn't have a min shutter speed setting, and its auto-ISO is useless in the non-auto modes (it just picks ISO 400 every time).

Can you also tap the touchscreen on this camera to take a photo focused on where you tap it?

Lastly, what sensor is this M the same as, the T2i's?

Thanks.

No idea on most. Honestly, I just jumped at this unexpected deal without doing a huge amount of homework, but that's commensurate with my primary intended use (backup camera for travel).

But FWIW, the sensor is the exact same one found in the T4i/650D.

Well, I bit, however with the zoom lens.  This will replace my Canon G10 which is showing its age a little.  It takes great shots at ISO 80/100/200 but above that, forget it. Plus AF on the G10 leaves a lot to be desired, so I can't imagine the M will let me down, especially with the new firmware.

Anyone know if these cameras will already ship with the new firmware?

No minimum shutter setting, haven't tried auto ISO.

Yes you can enable the touch shutter where you tap the screen, it focuses, then takes a shot.

I have to admit the timing of this was terrible.  My metabones adapter is arriving Monday if FedEx is accurate.  I used all my Amazon gift cards purchased from  credit card points.  If it was last week I could have gotten a EOS M for $50 plus tax.

But it was still to good of a deal to pass up.  But I will not be buying any accessories for it anytime soon and now have no need for the expensive Sony 20mm.  I need to rebuild funds and I can use all my lens on the Nex anyway.

Does anyone know the status of Magic lantern port to the EOS M?   It is extremely useful on the 60d.

Is this the most image quality for $300 ever?  The package has other issues, of course (AF issues, no OVF, lack of lenses, etc), but this sensor and lens combo for $300 new has got to be a candidate for the best IQ value in the history of digital imaging.  I love hyperbole.

I bought one.  I don't know what I'll do with it - I'll figure that out later.  It was just too good to pass up.

I couldn't resist. I'm probably going to hate myself in the morning. But I couldn't resist.

Is the AF issue that bad? From the canonrumors.com firmware 2 blog post and video it looks like the new firmware really improved AF. The firmware 1 video looked awful, and I wouldn't buy based on that. But AF in the firmware 2 video seemed fine.

As for trying to find a use for it...there is a Nikon F to EOS-M tilt/shift adapter on eBay. It's another $300 so I'm going to wait a bit. But a good friend has a ton of Nikon glass. Might prove useful.

WOW! ... that is an INCREDIBLE deal ... its a great camera with an AWESOME lens for just $299 ... the 22mm f/2 lens alone costs $216. I use this combo for evening occasions like dinners at a restaurant, small parties etc where the ambient light isn't all that great, but taking a big camera like a 5D MK III or even a crop sensor camera looks totally intrusive ... but EOS-M with the 22mm f/2 lens is just great for such occasions plus it comes in handy as a great backup body for Canon DSLR users ... also if you are a Full Frame user, the EOS-M works great to get extra reach for images of the moon or for birds perched on  a tree etc

I had already gotten the EF adapter off ebay for $70 so it was just an issue of when. $300 was when for me.

Who has the best price for the EF adaptor? Does the non Canon one work well or is it a "Sigma type" risk for the future that other lens won't work on it?

Seeing that the 70d will be able to use the 18-55 and 22 lenses

 ??? What?

Yeah, I think lensgrabber is not understanding that the EF-M mount is different than the EF mount and that the 70D won't be able to use these lenses.

The best deals anywhere for camera gear are always in the States.  That kit isn't available where I am in Southeast Asia, but a kit consisting of the EOS M, EF-M 22mm f/2 STM and EF-M adapter is available for roughly the equivalent of 640 USD at current exchange rates.  And that's after the price came down quite a lot recently.

The more I use this camera, the more I like it.  That is a fantastic deal.

True.  ACR for CS5 is no longer being supported.  You have to go to CS6 or use the forsaken Lightroom 5 (not sure if 4 supports it or not)

Is EOS-M RAW still not supported by Photoshop/ACR versions earlier than PS 6.0?
I'm still on CS5.

LR 4.2 includes raw conversion for EOS M.

Oh bummer, I have LR 3.2! Luckily I haven't bought one yet. I never even thought to check that!

Looked forward to it before it was released; then pooh-poohed it after trying one at a store. Now with the new firmware and only $300, had to get one. It's not gonna stop the kids' quick action but it can go with me everywhere and gives far greater IQ than many P&S. Putting large L lenses via the adaptor on it might be beating the purpose of having such a compact body. DSLR will make it much easier to capture the moments in life. Wish Canon could release more high IQ fast primes to go with their M line camera.

Little Kumiko is in tears. Devastated. She was so proud of her father for working to engineer Canon's first mirrorless camera, much joy in the family. But now she learns he produced a "piece of crap."

Been "on the fence" on this one.  Right now I bring my D10 for "active" vacations as my backup.  In good light (like on a beach) the waterproof P&S is not bad and I'll leave the big beast safely in the room.

I still have an old G6 (remember?) that, despite the lag and lack of IS, did a pretty good job for its era.  So, should I get the M and an EF adapter without IS?  Using the adapter, does anyone know if the unit then becomes manual focus only (which I'd think would be a challenge without a viewfinder)?

So, at this point I think I'll pass but obviously I am ambivalent or I'd not write this post.

With the EF mount adapter, an EF or EF-S lens is fully functional on the EOS M - that includes AF and IS (assuming the lens has IS, of course).

OTOH, I imagine AF'ing a lens like my 85L II will suck the life right out of that little battery...

BTW, I totally agree with the earlier pithy comment about Canon dropping the price of the M to get system buy-in.  If nothing else, I'll be getting the EF mount adapter.  If I actually start using the camera as more than a backup, I'd likely want at least one more EF-M lens (I expect we'll see a telezoom like a 50-150mm announced alongside the M II).  Plus, I'll need a case, perhaps a base plate for mounting to my RRS tripods, etc.

At least it's good for the economy...   ;)

I think under the best of conditions you only get a little more than 200-250 shots per charge.  It will be interesting to find out how an 85L or one of the big teles drain the battery in real life.  Need to buy another 200.00 in batteries Neuro.

my main kit is 60D 15-85 USM IS or Tammy  70-300 VG.  I bought a Drebel T4i w/18-135 STM, but the weight of one camera, let alone two at a time is killing me.  The Drebel/ 18-135 really isn't much lighter than the 60D and I hate the controls, etc.  I will not compromise and get a P&S w a sensor smaller than APS-C.

So,  sold my Rebel/18-135 for 800.00, and bought the EOS - M for 300.00...That leaves me 500.00 to put towards at 70D for XMAS..

Looks like you can still place the order at this deal and then get them once back-order arrives.

Guess the only remaining question I have is if (big IF) Canon were to produce a full-frame mirrorless, would it still be compatible with the M-mount? Think I read that they weren't planning a full-frame mirrorless, but plans can change.

Pardon my ignorance on the question, but I like to make sure the lenses I purchase will work on the camera bodies I upgrade to in the future, like avoiding EF-s lenses for my 7D (with a possible exception for the EF-s 10-22mm).

That's how it is at B&H. I opted for the M in white. It was supposed to be fulfilled today, but I guess I was low on the totem pole, so now have to wait until the 11th.

Anyone have any experience with little camera bags? I need one to hold the M + both lenses + 270EXll. So far all I have found is the Think Tank Mirrorless Mover 10 or 20.

The EF-M lenses have an image circle designed to just cover an APS-C sensor, same as EF-S lenses.

OTOH, I'm a firm believer in having lenses that are optimized for the camera you have today, not a camera you may get someday, whenever and if ever that day comes. At that point, you simply sell those lenses you no longer need.

To me its not about the price, its about the hardware.... no matter the price, you've got an EOS-M when all is said and done.

Lets see what gen-2 brings - thats my slant on this on in particular.

I didn't feel bad getting a 5DII at great savings when the 5DIII came out - as even with the lack of awesome focus, its still a very very capable camera.   Just that... Mirrorless is ok, but I'd like to have EVF in the mix.   So, maybe next model.....

Looking to upgrade from my P&S to something better. Trying to decide between this and a Nex-3N for $400. Once I get a flash for the EOS M, the prices are the similar. Is is it worth giving up the size advantage of the Nex (vs an M + flash)? I do not have any Canon or Sony gear so that is not a consideration either way. I will take indoor questionable light photography so I will need a flash.

I got a $50 gift certificate for my birthday and am thinking of using it on a EOS M accessory.

Either

I'd be able to use the GPS with my next body (have a 5DmII presently) so that would get some milage. The zoom might be handy, but then again it seems to defeat the purpose of a small camera. Plus with the adaptor I can use other zooms if I really want to.

i feel like I just ordered an RX1 lite! This camera is the perfect opportunity to test just how useful a 35mm f2 fixed lens camera is! I've been drooling over the RX1 for a while and I think this just may tide me over until a FF RX1/EOSM comes out!
Also, I just looked, and is there really only 2 lenses available for this system? How has Canon not made anything else to offer customers? I know I haven't seen one announced, but it's still surprising that there is zero wide angle or telephoto choices in the lens lineup, or pretty much zero of anything besides the 18-55 and 22mm.

Looks like you missed them announcing the EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM.  It's actually Canon's first UWA zoom with IS, and it's only for the EOS M.

Here's DPR's preview, where they suggest the IQ surpasses the EF-S 10-22mm:

Worth noting that they've not announced this lens for the USA yet, no idea why.  Personally, I expect an EF-M telezoom to be announced with the EOS M II, whenever that happens.

Just bought it...for fun. I've been meaning to buy a small camera to carry around when I'm out and I was debating between an SL1 or any of the micro 4/3 options. I've read tons of reviews of the EOS M when it first came out and when everyone complained about the AF speed, I decided not to think about it anymore. Then this deal came along and I heard that a new firmware update makes the AF speed acceptable. Just ordered the bundle with the 22mm f/2 off B&H. Now I'm deciding between the 270EX or 90EX as my flash. Maybe the 18-55 lens if I feel the 22mm isn't enough for me.

I do not plan on buying the 18-55mm zoom lens as I already have the adapter to use my existing EF lenses... but who knows, if there is a crazy a$$ deal one day, I might just buy it ... however, I do plan on buying the upcoming 11-22 IS STM lens.

Yes. For me, the adapter is required since being able to use the M with my existing glass is the main reason I would even consider buying this camera at any price. Though I'm sure my Tamron SP24-70VC or my EF24-105 would perform wonderfully on the M, I think the much smaller and lighter kit lens is more in keeping with the small footprint theme. While the rumored w/a lens sounds very interesting, I'm not sure whether I'd be interested in a tele, since that would also interfere with the theme. If I were to need reach with the M, I would then probably match it with my 70-200 f/4 IS.

I'm buying the EF mount adapter, since my main reason for getting the M is as a portable backup body.

If I do start using the M routinely, I'll likely want the EF-M 18-55 zoom.  But I wouldn't want to buy it solo - the way to buy a kit lens is in the kit, so that'd most likely be with an M II (or 'white box', with these cheap prices I expect we'll see kits bought then broken up and sold).

Just received the M adapter. It is one solid hunk of metal. Now I understand all those pics of the M attached to superteles, the adapter is more than strong enough. A pleasant surprise is that the adapter's tripod foot  is removable, since with an arca plate attached, it is as heavy as the adapter itself. If the body of the M is half as sturdy as the adapter, there will be no worries. Sure wish they'd have put a gasket on on it though :P

The M is solid - it feels like a brick. The SL1 feels like it's hollow after using the M for a while.

OK, now that you mentioned it, I do remember this announcement. If the 11-22 is really on par with or better than the 10-22 it could be a great addition to 22mm for me. When I bought the camera I was thinking there was a few lenses available for the M system, but then I checked the Canon USA site and the only lenses listed are the 18-55 and 22m,
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/ef_lens_lineup. (http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/ef_lens_lineup.) Thanks for reminding me, I'm a big wide angle fan so I'm surprised I forgot the good reviews about this lens.

Better act quick.  Stock is drying up.  Adorama is already out of stock and last I checked B&H only had the zoom kit left.

I can feel my reaction changing from "resistance" to "black or white?" and "22mm STM or 18-15mm?"

For those that missed this on BHP or Adorama, you can still order one from Amazon and get the $299 price.  Amazon's stock is drying up too, because they just changed the product page to say it needs an extra one or two days processing:

Do you guys plan to by the m 18-55mm zoom lens or use the adapter and your original L lens?

I have no interest in the 18-55. The 22mm is great, though, and the 11-22 is interesting - will wait to see where prices settle. Will be using the adapter for anything else, but I expect to keep the 22 on there 75% of the time.

I just checked amazon.jp - for anyone living in Japan you might be interested to know that the 22mm f/2 kit is now ¥31,527. It just dropped ¥4000 from yesterday and is now much closer to the $299 price in the US. I am so so tempted! It would be nice for those small occasions where a 5D2 and 24-105L looks ridiculous. Can't believe I'm considering it!

 :)

Update - just pulled the trigger. Bah I've spent more on a night out, this is pocket change for a portable APS-C body and fast prime!

Mine should be here on Monday.

I'm looking forward to 'hacking' this camera.  It seems to offer lots of possibilities given the availability of many different lens adapters (far more than the regular EF mount permits, since the M has a much shorter focal plane distance than most anything else).

But I wonder whether this means Canon plans a new model, or are they giving up on the M format?  This being Canon RUMORS, has anyone heard anything?

Do I need to panic and rush to get the EF adapter now (perhaps with them disappearing like the very rare FD-EF they made briefly for the pros), or can I wait a few weeks?  That sort of question.

Maybe this is the camera to perform the Bayer Filter removal and conversion to high resolution B+W only?

I think this is because they want to get people in on the system, and at prior prices it wasn't happening. After initial luke-warm reviews I'm sure a lot of people just forgot about it, so Canon never got to experience any kind of word of mouth, end user sales momentum.

I don't think they're dumping the M line, just the opposite IMO. I imagine there is a new body coming out sooner than later and they have too much stock built up. I also think they're working on lenses for the system, and you can't make money on lenses if no one has a body to put them on. I guess it's something like giving away free samples - get the basic system into peoples' hands, let them get a taste of it and hope they buy in longer term.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents. EF adapters look to be going for 80-100 on ebay, so that's not too shabby.

I don't see why they would release a new lens (11-22) if they were giving up on the format.

I tried to resist... really I did... but resistance was futile. Order placed at B&H. The M (in black) w/22mm is back-ordered, but is estimated to be back in-stock by 7/11. I can wait a few days--it's far easier than resisting. (http://canonrumors.com/forum/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

I'm still resisting, Dub.

On the positive side, it's a magnificent bargain. It looks like a capable and compact camera. It's extremely tempting, especially since it falls almost into the "petty cash" budget arena. I'd love to have one just to play with.

On the other side, I don't have any legitimate need for it. There are already more pictures I want to take and am trying to take with the great equipment I have. The M would simply be a distraction from what I'm trying to do photographically.

Seems better overall to let someone buy it who will use it than for me to bring it to my house where it will sit on a shelf 99% of the time, especially after the first month or so.

I had been waiting for the price on these to drop back down to $399... and funny enough the night before the drop I had one in my cart on BH for like $439 or something, and looked the next morning and saw it change to the $299, so ordered one right away.

Funny enough, I downloaded the new firmware (2.02) and then saw that it was already installed on the EOS M!

The one thing I always have a hard time wrapping my head around is size, so I took this photo showing how small it is compared to a Canon 5D Mk III with 24-70 2.8 II lens (left), Sony HX50V (top right) and Sony RX 100 (top middle):

Here it is compared with the Sony HX50V:

I've just played with it a little (arrived today) and I'm really impressed with it.  I already have two 5D Mk IIIs and a 6D and a lot of lenses, but I know it will be useful to me due to its small form factor.  I hope they come out with an EF-M prime lens (maybe 85mm equiv) that has longer reach and is still pancake profile - that will make it more useful to me.

Bargain of the year at $299 with lens.

I definitely don't need it, I'm just really getting tired of carrying around my huge DSLR and 24-70 lens. This camera will sit on the bottom of my backpack for everyday use. P&S quality just don't do it for me anymore and this is a cheap way to have something light and small without thinking too hard. I'm pretty excited to have this in my bag/cargo pockets when I go out.
And, If I end up never using it, I'm sure I can sell it for at least $250 bucks anytime, if not $400.

Not quite. EOS-M was grossly overprized and therefore ignored by the markets and Canon had stock piling up and almost no buy-in into the M-ecosystem. So we have forced Canon to price the product more reasonably. 299,- is no bargain, it is about "fair value" at the moment. It will drop further very soon, when more capable and interesting products appear. :-)

Great post! This was really helpful as I have a Sony RX100, but I'm looking to replace it with the EOS M (bigger sensor, save $, can use Canon glass). I was wondering if you can type some thoughts on how the two cameras compare in terms of AF, IQ, color rendition, handling, etc. Much appreciated if so; no worries if you don't have the time :)

I picked one up my self after seeing this deal on CR... the intention was for my wife to use it, as her P&S Elph really produces sub par photos (as far as I am concerned). I have to say playing around with it for a couple days I have been really impressed. Sure, it is not a 5D Mark III but it is 1/10 of the price. The image quality is on par with my 60D, and yes the focus is a bit slower, but again, for $300 I don't think you can get better image quality; especially not in this size.

I had been keeping my 60D as backup to the 5Diii for places I didn't want to haul all my gear and have a slightly lighter kit; in all honesty at $299 I am considering selling the 60D and picking up my own EOS-M. For family trips to the amusement park, etc, I think this little guy seems more than adequate!

My next trip to HongKong & China is about couple weeks away. I was looking @ RX-100 & Fuji x20 for the trip. I thought I have to spend $500 to $600 for it. Well, $299 is a great deal for small body size camera with 22 X 14mm sensor, not to mention a f2 prime lens is included.

Look forward to see Canon new UWA 11-22mm lens for mirrorless. Also, I hope Canon will release some more pancake lenses: Macro, UWA, 50, 85 etc... Will be great for travelers.

For what it's worth, in Kai's hands-on review at DigitalRev, at 1:55 he mentions that the white one is a bit slippery compared to the black one due to the glossy finish, where as the black one has a grippy matte finish. Think that's enough to push me towards the black one instead.

Supposedly the white ones are in a glossy finish whereas the black ones are in a matt finish. Some say the white gloss is very slippery. That's why I picked black.

For all of the people who got in on this deal, just FYI - the burst rate with the 22mm (or 18-55) when using servo AF is terrible. Would definitely be worth it to fit one of your EF lenses if you expect to need 4+ FPS with servo during an outing.

I wonder if there will be a similar limitation for all EF-M lenses going forward.

I think you misunderstand the limitation.

"* During continuous shooting, the focusing mode for the shots after the first one depends on the lens used. When an EF-M lens is attached, the AF frame selected will be fixed and the camera will keep focusing the subject within the selected AF frame. In other words, with an EF-M lens, the lens actually refocuses on the subject between shots during the Servo burst, but with an EF or EF-S lens, the focus is fixed with the first shot, and does not track a moving subject.

exactly.

Nikon 1 with latest latest firmware will AF-track with any Nikon AF-S lens attached via adapter ... and much better and faster than EOS-M.

One of many reasons why the EOS M sucks and I won't get one, no matter how seemingly low the price may be.

And maybe within a couple weeks. I'd probably have gone for it if the 70D hadn't been introduced.

I'm thinking the same thing.  That new live-view AF is just aching to be put into a mirrorless body!!!

Can't wait to see the EOS-M Mark II!!

Let's hope that future EF-M lenses will improve on this...but we'll probably need to wait on a new body.

Let's hope that future EF-M lenses will improve on this...but we'll probably need to wait on a new body.

Well, yeah - but let's also hope they enable true Servo AF for EF/EF-S lenses that actually tracks moving subjects!

An intriguing offer has appeared on an Italian site:

EOS M + EFM 18-55mm + EFM 22mm + 90 EX + EF Mount adapter = "Full Kit EOS M" = 565€.

The vendor (galaxiastore) does not belong to my "preferred list"  :(  (which includes Amazon.it and two other shops) but other Italian people checked it and were happy about it.

http://www.galaxiastore.it/product_info.php/products_id/2310/Vendita-CANON-EOS-M-NERA-18-55mm-22mm-90EX---EF-M---FULL-KIT-EOS-M (http://www.galaxiastore.it/product_info.php/products_id/2310/Vendita-CANON-EOS-M-NERA-18-55mm-22mm-90EX---EF-M---FULL-KIT-EOS-M)

P.S. EOS M + EF-M 22mm sells for 455€; EOS M + EF-M 18-55 + 90 EX = 395€

I don't know yet. that was a photo sent to me by UPS. They have to deliver it to me.. But i'm also waiting for a reply from B&H on how to proceed with this..if i should accept it or if they can send me a replacement. I'm ok to keep it if the hardware is undamaged but i won't know until they deliver it to me tomorrow

No matter how things seemed when I got a package like this I would never keep it.  It MAY work and look OK but who knows a few days, weeks, or months down the road.  If there are issues you will wonder if it had something to do with how it was handled in shiping and even if you are sure it was handling you have lost your one chance to have something done about it.  Even if I had to wait I would get a replacement.

Glad mine from B&H was shipped FedEx!

Looks as if a giant octopus chewed it up and spat it back out. Even if the thing had weather sealing it would be toast by now. Wait for a replacement, won't be long (according to rumors there are warehouses full of EOS M collecting dust).

If you don't have the needs for it, I would ask for replacement. I like to keep all original stuff, including box + sale receipt together. I think it's easier to sell used camera gear on CL with original box & sale receipt. Buyers are willing to pay little more from original owner. That's just me of course ;)

Nikon 1 with latest latest firmware will AF-track with any Nikon AF-S lens attached via adapter ... and much better and faster than EOS-M.
::) ::) ::)
One of many reasons why the EOS M sucks and I won't get one, no matter how seemingly low the price may be.
Ignorance is bliss!

I haven't received mine yet, but I imagine it is the same for the M. In the menu, go to the furthest right "gold wrench" index and look at the bottom. The latest firmware can always be found on Canon's website. Go to the page dedicated to your camera and look for the software section.

yup found it and it has the latest. the menu items actually changes depending on where the selector is. i was at [a+] mode which for some reason wont show it.

thanks

really like the touch screen interface . i could understand the appeal to a lot of users and why it is in dslrs. Fitting an EF lens would seem to really mess up the balance but it might work. Will see when i get my adter  ;)

Put camera in Av or Tv or P mode. Then go to menu. Press the last menu tab that looks like a wrench with four squares (next to the star). You will see an option for firmware with the current version. To update go to Canon USA and find EOS M. Click software and drivers and you'll see options for firware after you select your OS. Download file then follow the guide that comes with it.

2.0.2 is the latest one.

don't even ask for an RMA, don't even wait for a delivery to your house.
If the camera in that picture was coming to me, i'd call UPS NOW and yell at them and have it returned to B&H ASAP. If you sign it and accept the package, it's yours, and you may have more difficulty returning it. You cant return a water damaged camera to B&H. If you simply refuse delivery, then the camera was never yours and it's UPS' fault. Just refuse the package, and call B&H and set up another shipment.
Even if that camera was in perfect working condition I would NEVER sign for it.

The more I think about this deal, the more I wonder if - for those of us considering a "compact" backup - there is a logical reason not to buy one.   It can function as a compact with the pancake lens - and also as a backup to an EOS dslr without taking up much space in the bag.  Granted the autofocus has its limitations - and as I understand - much less so with the new firmware,  but the upside to this camera (especially at the $299 price point) appears to far outweigh the downside.   And at those times that a DSLR is just to heavy or bulky for the occasion,  this camera is likely to be with you. I clearly understand why so many people are jumping on the bandwagon.  It may not bring all of the answers, but it sure makes a lot of sense.

How will UPS deliver it? In a plastic bag? The box is gone, so you would have to box it and return it yourself.

I just bought two of these, one with each type of lens, for the family to use and share on an upcoming trip. I had been considering just getting the G15 for the trip, but decided this way gives me more options. My kids really like the functionality of the touch screen, since they are used to using an iPod.

Is it true that the M uses a combination of phase and contrast detection, and so if I use my m42 manual lenses on it, will it still give a focus confirmation beep?

And if I use my 50mm 1.8 lens on it, which on my DSLR has inconsistent focus reliability (due I think to having a cheap focus motor which doesn't seem to work too well with phase detection) it will focus much more reliably because the contrast detection on the M will help it?

Quick question.  I've got a 70D on preorder with the 18-135 STM lens.  Should that lens work out of the box with the EOS-M?

Ordered two of the EOS-M and the first one, 18-55, came today (Amazon).  My B&H (22mm) order should be here Thursday.  So far I really like the size.  I'll play more with it tonight and see if the firmware needs updated.

No, you need the EF-M Lens Adapter to use EF-S or EF lenses on the EOS M.

M white discontinued on B and H?  I bought one last night - looks like I got it just in time.  I have zero interest in any other lenses, but with the pancake it will make an ideal point and shoot.  I currently have a Panasonic LX5 (white) for my point and shoot, but the dynamic range is just aweful.  Shots with sunlight and shade are virtually useless, even for snapshots.  Hopefully the M will solve my point-and-shoot angst, although I do wish it had a viewfinder.

If you scroll down the page on the B & H website, the cameras still appear to be offered for 353.95(w/22)  and 399.95 (w/18-55).

In fact, these include an extra battery, sd card, bag, filter and cloth - which are not included with the $599.95 offerings.

Wow, I was able to pick one up at the last minute. I was looking at the deals yesterday and thought the $299 price for just the M was a good deal...man am I glad I spend too much time on CR!

I'm excited because even if we upgrade if/when another EOS-M-model comes out in the near future, we'd be able to make back most of what we spent on the body while keeping the great lens.

And by the way, I think it's great that B&H won't charge you until it actually ships the product.

I'm sure the RX-1 is better. I'm sure I'd rather have an RX-1.
But, the EOS-M I just bought is about 8% of the cost of the Sony and smaller. Also, while the RX-1 will probably depreciate significantly, the M at $299 may well appreciate if sold correctly. I bought this camera to tide me over until the full frame RX-1/EOS-M comes out.....
Sorry..... couldn't help but mention that.

hehehe ... so funny to see "crazy deal" EOS-M shoppers believing they would find buyers willing to pay more than USD 99,- for a used EOS-M including lens (22 or 18-55).

But yes, you will loose significantly less money than folks shelling out 3 grand for a Sony RX-1.

Currently cost in the Netherlands 569 euro (approx. 714 US dollar) - that includes 21 percent taxes. With those prices they will not get Europe out of an economic crisis. People are not spending their money

EOS M + EFM 18-55mm + EFM 22mm + 90 EX + EF Mount adapter = "Full Kit EOS M" = 565€.

The vendor (galaxiastore) does not belong to my "preferred list"  :(  (which includes Amazon.it and two other shops) but other Italian people checked it and were happy about it.

http://www.galaxiastore.it/product_info.php/products_id/2310/Vendita-CANON-EOS-M-NERA-18-55mm-22mm-90EX---EF-M---FULL-KIT-EOS-M (http://www.galaxiastore.it/product_info.php/products_id/2310/Vendita-CANON-EOS-M-NERA-18-55mm-22mm-90EX---EF-M---FULL-KIT-EOS-M)

Same store, another sudden price drop.

EOS M + EFM 18-55mm IS STM + EFM 22mm  STM + 90 EX + EF Mount adapter = "Full Kit EOS M" = 535€.   :o   :o   :o

I must confess that I am tempted now. I'll talk to the Board of Directors (i.e. my wife  ;D ) about it.

For what it is worth, I got my order in on Monday.  The camera really has a nice build quality to it and feels better than my T2i.  Honestly, I'm pretty impressed.  Sure, the AF is slower than the T2i, but is better than other P&S I have used in the past.  Also, it came loaded with the latest firmware.

Hope this information helps anyone still deciding.

$299 for EOS-M with 22mm lens is a GREAT DEAL - I doubt we could loose much if we decided to upgrade in the future.

Most of us would buy FF if we can afford it - right? I don't expect making money out of RX-1 when I'm ready to upgrade to RX-1 version II.

AF speed on Canon EOS-M is still much slower than my RX-1.
RX-1 is 800% more expensive then the EOS-M but it isn't 800% faster ... both cameras are totally in different league, the comparison just does not make sense.

To me, fast enough to capture a photo in almost no light condition at the right moment is priceless.

I think you right about these cameras are not in the same league.

What a deal!
Currently cost in the Netherlands 569 euro (approx. 714 US dollar) - that includes 21 percent taxes. With those prices they will not get Europe out of an economic crisis. People are not spending their money

21 percent sales tax!  :o
People in the United States complain relentlessly if the sales tax goes anywhere close to 10 percent.

just because you can afford something does not mean that you can justify buying it. Perhaps if the RX-1 was 24 or 28mm I'd be a little more tempted. When the lens comes off, i'll definitely bite.

Just been looking at some rx-1 reviews. For me I can't see why it costs $3k. The AF is still contrast detection right? Can't be all that faster than the EOS M, can it? And no removable battery?? No charger in the box? Just a USB cable? How is that useful for travel?

Quite happy knowing I have something that costs $299 and does pretty much the same thing. (Takes puctures). Full frame? So what.

I had the RX1 and I can objectively and subjectively see why it costs $3k; the Zeiss lens has been specifically matched with that body/sensor and all within a very small, manageable form factor (albeit too small for some). After trying the EOS-M at a local store, I can confirm that the AF speed of the RX1 is noticeably faster. Is it 10x faster (at 10x the price)? Well, that's something you'd have to decide for yourself after actually trying it out. Notice how I said that I "had" the RX1? Although it is a superb little camera, it is still somewhat niche with that single 35mm, non-interchangeable focal length, and it doesn't quite match the AF speed of modern DSLRs. Therefore, I sold it. To each his own I suppose, but I've never gotten that "Wow!" factor as consistently as I did with the RX1. It was just so easy. As for its full frame sensor vs. APS-C in the EOS-M: I'm not a betting man, but if you were to slap on the 22mm f/2 STM, or even a Zeiss 35mm f/2 ZE (or 21mm f/2.8 for an almost equivalent FOV) on an EOS-M and compared it to the RX1, I'm almost positive you'd pick the latter as a more pleasing image 9/10 times. That's how good the RX1's IQ is. However, at $299 w/ an f/2 prime, add on the EF adapter for full compatibility with all of your existing Canon lenses, the EOS-M truly is a steal. So if you're looking for affirmation for your recent purchase, I'd be more than happy to give you a pat on the back; but it'd be ridiculous to disregard the RX1 simply because it is too expensive for your taste, especially if you haven't even tried it out. Both are excellent cameras for their intended purposes: the EOS-M as a pocket cam and/or backup to its much larger DSLR bretheren, and the RX1 as an IQ monster in a smaller form factor (which you pay a premium for); but neither excel in fast-paced action.

P.S. The RX1 uses the same removable battery that the RX100 does, but you have to purchase the battery charger separately.

I'm extremly happy that I got EOS-M for $299 through BH - great little camera for still shooting.

If bigger sensor is not so much important in photography, then why not settle for 4/3 or smaller. I can't describe the feeling of holding such a small camera(RX-1) that produce stunning photos. I'm shooting with 5D III with latest L lenses and I'm still amaze with RX-1. Hope Canon will have some thing similar + be able to swap lenses.

I agree...@ $2800 Sony should include all accessories you mentioned. Removeable battery is included, not the wall charger.

Your amazement is probably due to the fact that the RX-1 has a big sensor?  :)

For me $3000 is too much for a pocket camera just so I can carry it everywhere even if it is FF, especially since it's stuck at 35mm forever.

But $300 is just fine. Bonus: it shoots great video, and can accept all my other lenses in a pinch, with the adapter. And APS-C is not too shabby to have in your pocket and not have to worry about it at all.

Out of camera at 100% on screen? Yes. After post processing and printing? Probably couldn't tell the difference except at high ISO and in a few edge cases (i.e. the Sony lens might be better in the corners wide open or better shooting into the sun or something).

I'm not knocking the Sony. If I had the disposable cash I might have one. Just being realistic about the differences I see in available images online.

I got mine today.  I really like the size and feel or this camera.  However, I noticed when I took mine out of the box the camera makes a slight "rattling" noise when you move it around.  It sounds like something is moving or loose inside the camera.  It seems to work fine.... I was wondering if this noise was normal?

Ahhhhhhhhh.  I finally acquiesced!   ;)

All the logic about an "almost pocketable - better than P&S - can't beat getting an APS-C at this price- can use your EF lenses with a converter" finally won me over.

So I ordered it from Amazon with the 22mm.  Now, given my collection, wonder if I'll just get the converter and carry my 40 2.8 or 50 for more reach (I know, no IS) or use my 24-105 for a big tele?  I figure the 40 or 50 with the converter won't take up much room on a family outing.  Guess I could get the 18-55 M if it is lighter and easier (understand the IQ is decent) but still thinking about the converter anyway.

Hmm.......my 100-400 with a 1.4 on the M converter yields an effective almost 900 mm "reach" (semantics again, I know).  That would be very weird to handhold.  That's a scary thought.   ;)  Would the battery last more than 20 minutes with a crazy setup like that?

What did I do?  Oh my.

Yeah that was my point. I'm sure the rx-1 has great IQ but would anyone be able to tell the diff in a blind test? I don't have the ef adapter or I'd test the EOS M against the 5D2 and same lens.

When I'm out door on a sunny day, my little Canon S100 can take amazing photos - good as 7D. However, my s100 is not so amazing when I'm indoor or at higher ISO.

Simple math: 2 is bigger than 1. Bigger bucket will hold more water. Bigger sensor will produce better IQ in any light, esp. in low light. T

My comments are based what I see in real life and through my own photos. What about you guys?

The cheap eBay adapters are knock-offs, not Canon. Are they well made? I'm told the Canon one is very strong. That's important if you're attaching a $2000 + lens to it.

Anyone have experience with the cheap knock-offs?

There are apparently some OEM adapters from eBay - the adapter is sold as part of an EOS M kit in some locations, so they are sold as the equivalent of white box versions.

I have the OEM, it's very robust.  One difference I noticed from images of the knock-offs is that the tripod foot isn't the video style with the hole for the anti-rotation pin.

It's difficult to tell from some of the pics, but it also appears that the foot isn't removable on some of the 3rd party adapters. I didn't even consider going with anything other than the Canon adapter, but then I again I only paid $70 for mine.

GuangDong, China - you can find any high end counterfeit stuff there. Iphone $10-$12, Rolex $5-$45, Tayormade golf clubs(set) $40-$200, Nikon & Camera DSLR and lenses $110 - $400 more...more...and more ;D. I'm sure they do ;)

How do you like it so far? I'm tempted to buy some batteries, cards, and the adapter in preparation for delivery of the M.

I'm planning to use it as a pocket camera, but I am seriously hoping that Canon comes out with a sharp 15mm f/2.8 for the M, and some other neat little primes.

just opened the box.
to reiterate what others have pointed out, it is a bit heavier feeling that I expected (not a bad thing) but, even with the 22, seems too big for my pocket.

The focus is slow in existing light in my kitchen at night, but not awful.

Thinking about something like this

I REALLY want to like my new EOS M, I REALLY do... but I just looked on the B&H site and the "Expected availability" date, which was originally listed as "July 11 2013" for those of us who hesitated but still got in in time for the $299 deal, got pushed to "July 18 2013", and now says "July 25 2013"... I'm hoping the new date is for a second batch, but my sense is that the whole shipment has been delayed. Hell, maybe if it takes long enough the factory will have time to retool and sneak in the new Dual Pixel AF technology! ;)
