Title: Post your favorite camera gear here
Post by: Dylan777 on October 07, 2013, 10:39:46 AM
After 2 weeks playing with X100s, I’m still in love with retro/classic/vintage body style. Hope Canon will have something like this soon.

What is your favorite gear?

Dylan

I'm not too fussed with rangefinders and Digicams. The output just isn't in the same league.
My current kit of choice is a pair of 5DIII's, a 35L and 85IIL...sweet image and lots of DOF lushness :D

My favorite gear changes from time-to-time, mainly depending on what I shoot.  The 5DIII has been a mainstay since I bought it, though, so that's probably the best answer.  If we're talking about gear love, though, my 300 f/2.8 IS II holds that title and has since I bought it several months ago.  My body is still a wreck (major neck/shoulder/arm problems) but what little shooting I've done lately has been with this lens.  I love the way it makes even mundane photos look amazing and I've been shooting portraits with it lately and love the results.  I know you sold yours for the 400, but the 300 has found a happy home with me :)

Dear  Dylan777
I still fell in love/ The First Love of  1965 Canon FT-QL ( Battle TANKS Quality), and  1992 Super/ High Tech- Canon A2E with Eye control AF. :

"The A2E's basic features are impressive, what sets it apart as a historical landmark is Canon's innovative and exclusive Eye-Control Autofocus, a photographic adaptation of a concept used by fighter pilots in aiming at their targets. The system employs a CCD sensor housing two sets of infrared LEDs (iREDs) built into the left side of the viewfinder. These iREDs detect which part of the viewfinder the user is looking at and then targets the AF zone corresponding to that area, so the user, not the camera, determines the point of precise focus. If the viewer wears glasses, a second set of diodes is activated, and if the shooter glances at the depth-of-field icon in the finder while holding the shutter button partway in, the lens automatically stops down to the shooting aperture. "

I still use 5 Canon Bodies 35 MM,. Film Cameras 2 times per month---Just Warm up engine of the old cameras.
Enjoy, Sir.

My favorite CAMERA gear is what CAMERA gear is in my hand at that moment, whatever CAMERA gear that may be.

Edited for clarity to reduce the innuendo.  Get your mind out of the gutter, Don…  :P

As for the retro look, it's a personal preference, but personally I agree with a comment made by rs in another thread:

I hope you're not suggesting the Df is innovative? If so, Morgan make the most innovative cars in existence. There's nothing like a modern engine nailed into a chassis made of timber :)

Surapon, the FT-QL is pretty cool - it gets its vintage look honestly, because it's 'old' (well, relatively at any rate).  Vintage ≠ retro.

Yes, For 1965 my first Canon 35 MM. Film = Canon FT-QL with Canon FL 50 mm F/ 1.4  ( Yes FL. Lenses are Manual Focus Only)---When I came to USA in 1974,  Send my wife to go to school , to get PHD, And In that time I work 3 Jobs in the day/ 24 Hours, As Draftman  for the Artchitects/ Engineering Company in the work day time , From 7:00 AM to 4:00PM, And at 6:00PM to 11 :00PM, go to work as Dish washer in the  Howard Johnson  Hotel , Plus work as ARTIST ( Paint the Building/ Apartments---Ha, Ha, Ha ) in the week end.
Yes, After I make money of 3 jobs, and have money left  after pay the Tuition Fee for my Wife Education, I buy the First Auto Focus Lens from Vivitar( At that Time, For  FL Mounted, Canon Lens did not have AF capability yet) = 28-70 mm. F/ 3.5-4.8 SC ( Self-Contained) Auto-Focus Zoom----Sorry, I forget how much ??, But I have to work so many weeks to buy this awesome Lens.,
Just Put this Lens in to My Canon FT-QL, Put 3 AAA Batteries in the Lens Chamber = Bing-Go---After set up Shutter speed at Canon Camera = 1/ 125 sec( for Bright sun shine in day time), Set the F. Stop at the Lens = 8.0,   Set up the Zoom at any focal length that I want ( from 28 mm to 70 mm)---Press the Button AF at the Lens, and The Lens will move the Glass with Loud Noise, And BEEP , when it hit the right AF. spot---Look at the View finder ,at the Meter Needle, Press half Shutter and See the Needle of the Meter at the Center ( ) ) or not---If Not, During press half the Shutter, Open  or Close F. Stop at the Lens, untill the Meter Needle at the Center ( 0 )----And Just continue press the shutter until the loud sound of the Shutter Blade Open and Close , to Capture the Light on the 35 MM Film---And After that, PRAY real Hard to get the Best Picture---BUT, IF in the Dark / Shade Area---Ha, Ha, Ha---I must do this process 2 more times, Both Under Exposure and Over Exposure, And Hope for the best.----Yes, That 3 Films in 36 Films in 1 roll.

Yes, The Young Photographers in this era do not know how the Old Photographers like US, work 40- 50 years ago---to try to get the Good/ Great Photos, and cost arms and Legs.
Enjoy.
Nice to talk to you, Sir/ Madame
Have a great day.

i'm likely to be in the minority on this one, but my favorite piece of gear is a nice, fluid ball head sitting atop a CF tripod.

hands down the most frequently used piece of gear in my kit.

All time sentimental favorite camera is a black body 1974 Canon FTb-n with the FD 50 f1.4 breech-lock lens.  It's my first 35 and the camera that got me hooked on photography.  Next favorite is the Canonet GIII QL17 (40mm 1.7).  Both are simple, manual, nothing fancy, tough, no battery required (except for the meter) cameras that were fun to use.

But, my current favorite is the 5D3 with the 70-200 f2.8L II.  Never ceases to amaze me what this body can do in tough situations.  (Shh...a year ago, the 7D was the favorite that didn't cease to amaze.)

I'm in late 30. I got into photography 5yrs ago. I don't know much about film camera, but I LOVE the look of old-vintage camera bodies.

I wish Canon would make some FF mirrorless, looks like your "Canonet GIII QL17". I will be the first one on pre-order list :)

Dear all
Lots of mouth-watering stuff presented in this post.

Just now for me the hottest and most favorite gear is my two new CLARINETs !!

Bought last week and still in the burn-in phase (meaning that they have to get used to humid air passing through them, so that the wood of the corpses gradually pick up a suitable level of humidity). They are equipped with special silent pads, and mouth-pieces will be selected for my style of playing (no red rings - but same concept).
While they are not exactly weather sealed, I can assure you that the Dynamic Range is extraordinary.
You need two of them for serious orchestra work (like two bodies for sports).

One of the key characteristics of good clarinet-playing is to produce a well focused sound that can be projected both wide and far. Sharp is normally not the most sought after characteristic, while soft (like in bokeh) is very much. Well in tune across the whole spectrum is a must, too. (Cf. exposure and white balance)
All in all many similarities - the list of analogies can be extended - feel free to add some.
And as for photography the tools are important, but the output depends first and foremost on the 'artist'.

OK, to leave my other passion, music - and get back on subject, I add a detail picture of one of my still in use older clarinets.
(It was made with my old 450D, and my 50mm f/1.4 - while now my 6D is the favorite photographic tool).

Edit: the image turned out rotated - In my own view it is vertical.
