Title: Contest Announcement!
Post by: Canon Rumors on October 03, 2011, 09:43:32 PM
Yay! Free Stuff! I did a pre-announcement of the contest on Facebook some time ago, and today again at the Planet5D interview. So here it finally is.

The Grand Prize: The winner may pick one of the following lenses.

The 2nd Prize A new bag! Once again from Gura Gear.

Other Prizes I will be giving out random prizes to people that participate. You never know when you’re going to get a message from me giving something away.

How it works? It’s simple, this is a photo contest. The best photograph at the end of the day will win the grand prize. The runner-up will receive the 2nd prize.

Where do I post the images? You post the images on our forum. There are threads in the forum called “Lens Giveaway Contest”. Post to the corresponding thread for your image submission.

Link to the forum

The categories The following categories are what your photos must fall under. We’re going to be pretty lenient on this, the categories are just a guideline.

The above links go to the corresponding forum thread.

The Rules

Terms & Conditions

The above rules will probably evolve and be added to over the next little while, so please keep checking back.

You may discuss the contest on a thread dedicated to it. It can be read here.

Just wondering, is there a rule against cropping an image? What about exposure and colour adjustment?

Is it allowed to post older photos, or do we have to shoot from now on?

Given the amount of pics up so far: Poor judges, that's gonna be a long sift for winners...

Could end up as long combined as the Holga thread, plus work actually looking at the pics not just picking random names...

ps, questions:
- Does it have to be a Canon Lens? (i've seen enough Sigmas/Tamrons, and posted enough Lensbabies so far that I hope not)
- Does it absolutely have to be RAW? I've only just started shooting RAW since I got a new comp with much more drive space...
- How much PP is allowed? I leave my images pretty much untouched once it passes DPP, but i'm sure a lot of people like HDR, dust removal, etc...

You must use a Canon camera to make the images. I will request EXIF data of all the winners.

Hmm, my EOS 650 doesn't produce EXIF info. ;-)

(OK, I have only shot one spool this year...)

uhm, if only people bothered to stop by a minute and read the rules -.-
The competition just started, yet thus far I've already seen plenty of pics not respecting the (very few and simple) rules posted... go figure.

Am I missing something? Nowhere do I see rules stating that it must be shot raw, yet I see several questions about it above. ~confused~

As I understand it, no restrictions on date taken, editing/processing/cropping/format shot (eg jpg vs raw) simply that it must be posted at 700px or less on longest side, and must be taken with a Canon *camera* (lenses not mentioned).

The only question I do have: where do pet pictures go - has anybody asked and been told which category for those? I've sent a PM to Fearless Leader asking the same question, but in case anybody knows....

Yeah, he's edited the top post a few times without responding directly to questions, fair enough, there's going to be enough work ahead for him...

And are pets not 'wildlife'? I've seen a few in 'street' too. but as is always the case in competitions, fit the image to the subject, not the other way around...

I've seen a few over 700pixels (think i accidentally did one myself too, forgot to click 'ok' on the scale image dialogue. And i've seen a few sepia / colour-wash in the B+W thread. Monochrome they may be, but not Black and White.

Still, a clarification on the amount of PP would be good, i've seen a few that could only be a few images pasted together...
(layers ok, if they were all taken with a canon camera? how about multi-image HDR or panoramas?)

Wow! The sheer number of entries is daunting, Looks like the judges are going to have a ball  ;D

I am assuming color & exposure adjustments should be fine, composite images on the other had may not be. Need some clarification on this.

Just to be sure
You may enter the contest as many times in as many categories as you’d like. Remember, one entry per post.
means I could post as many picture as I like?

Wow, I just took a brief look-see at the various categories, and my eyes watered, hehe :o. Looks like Craig needs to give away more from his lens collection, haha. Maybe there should be a form of "loyalty" award and allow only forum members who registered before the contest started to participate, as I seem to see many new members just registering for this contest.  ???

What constitutes a "view"?

I have seen some photos that have only been up a few minutes and have over 1000 views.  Of course this thing being world wide may make sense of the number of views, but when the photo is just a snapshot without any real interesting features get 1000+ views?  How are the views tabulated?

This is just curiosity.

Yes, pets = Wildlife (received a PM confirming this)

Can somebody clarify for me how to size them on this website (if there's a link with explanation, just point me to it).  I was linking to shots which are not 700px and there was no "scale image" dialog involved - I could resize them and re-upload, but if there's a simpler way, that would be great. Thanks!

From what i've gathered by being here a while:
If the image is small enough to fit "inline", then every time the page loads for someone, somewhere, it gets counted as a 'view'.
If the image is too big to fit "inline" then a thumbnail is shown, and a link is put to the fullsized image. Only if someone clicks to look at the fullsized image does it count as a 'view'.
Check out the Wildlife comp thread for examples (it's the worst i've seen so far), some pages there's barely one image that's 700 pixels, and it has a few hundred views, then some that people have just uploaded at 2000 pixels or more wide, have less than 10 'views'.

I could resize them and re-upload

Yep, do that. Unless you can figure out how to make flickr etc resize them on the fly, it's gotta be a dedicated upload. I've been busy cropping and shrinking for all of mine (but they're not uploaded anywhere else yet).

Maybe there should be a form of "loyalty" award and allow only forum members who registered before the contest started to participate, as I seem to see many new members just registering for this contest.  ???

Same as the Holga comp, most people in that thread still only have a post or two to their name.
But (to be completely cynical), that's not the point. Check out the number of views on the images, some over 1000 times. Then realise that every time that image loads, the automatic CR-bot posts an ad or three on every page of every thread. That's a lot of ad views, I reckon minus the cost of the prize lenses, he's gonna make enough to keep this site going for quite a while...
(and another reason we can enter as many pics as we like. More work for him, sure, but more ad views too  :P )

Less competition would be nice, but what about someone who's been coming here for years without actually signing up to the forum?

I'm more interested to know what'll happen to all the >700 pixel shots, if they get a friendly warning, or just get chucked out of the judging before it starts (i've seen a 701-pixel shot, i'd hope it's not so harsh that it gets thrown out)?

Have been trying to figure out what 700px wide is and an example for the last day or so...ended up pulling up images and examples on the internet of its size and......DOH...F#$%!@!!*%^%!!!! Cr*p *sigh*  Idjit, when it comes to stuff like this, software, etc., very basic stuff can do but haven't quite learned it all yet....LOL   :-[  *sigh* But learn something new in this specific context every day!!

Colours change between your imaging system viewing it on your browser? Or colours changing between your computer and the judges'?
I know IE <9 doesn't have colour profiling support, so colours may change between your imaging program and browser using that.
And if you're not using a calibrated monitor and ICC profiled workflow, then there's no guarantee that anything you see on your own screen will look the same on any other screen in the world.

If you have no idea what i'm talking about, start by googling "colour management", "ICC profiles", "sRGB vs AdobeRGB" or similar, also try starting here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_management) or here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICC_profile).

Still, my limited experience with photo comps is that subject, composition, lighting, etc, are more important than exact colours...

Am I the only one who iss going to stick to the rules about amount of pictures?
It is very clearly stated that one can only post one picture in every category!
Hope that the judges take this into consideration when ruling out the best of the best. Otherwise the odds for all those faithful to the rules will suffer from "underexposure" :-\

You may enter the contest as many times in as many categories as you’d like. Remember, one entry per post.

That means as many entries in as many categories as many times as you want = infinite number of posts (if you so desire).
What it actually means is only one picture per 'reply' (which i've seen broken enough times anyway), so there's only 15 images per page for faster load times and to keep it nicely sorted.

SOmetimes if you are using PS, for example, just uncheck the profile box you happen to have listed there, and it should then look as it does on your computer. . .

it's the colour ICC profile check box you see when you go to save an image in jpg, etc, Just try unchecking it, and then try uploading again to see if it stays the sdame colour as you have it on your computer.

I'll be honest, I just joined this forum for the contest. I've kept an eye on the site for a year or so now, but never the forums. However, the community does seems very nice here. I may just have to stick around.  ;D

Thanks for the opportunity with this contest.

And just to clarify, we can enter as many photos as we'd like as long as they're in separate posts?

Thanks,
Coby

It is a good thing that this competition is running until November 15.

There would be way too few participants if the competition ended today or perhaps last week.

I mean with any photo manager engine...

Hi,
I tried to made a gallery of all photos
By the way, there is some caveats :
- There is only photos directly posted on Canon Rumors Forum (I was not able to parse & download others pics)
- I didn't dedup files (it seems that some people have posted 2 times the same photo)
- It's possible there is some miss or others mistake, because I used batch to download & process all files, and I didn't check all
- Filenames are "File attach ID" on CanonRumors forum engine
- I used simpleviewer as gallery engine, it should be OK to see the galleries on various devices

Canon Rumors guy, if there is a problem doing this, tell me and I will remove that (or remove this post ;-) )

The links are by categories :

Creative Lighting
Event Photography

Thanks, Brouno. That's a real treat!!

Is there any chance to make all the pics available in a nicer way?

Yeah, some are amazing and would have been really hard to set up with multiple flashes, long exposures, HDRs, whatever.
But there's a few than imply impossibility, ie could have only been made using photoshop/gimp/whatever.
I don't mind competing against them, my photos look good to me and that's what counts. I don't have photoshop and my gimp skill is limited to a bit of colour/curves tweaking. I'd rather use a lensbaby instead of a cheesy 'blur the edges' filter. I'd rather use a super-fast lens than cut my subject onto another layer, blur the background, and put the subject back. I'd rather use a Tilt lens than just blur the top and bottom of an image. But if my photo is competing against someone who does do one of these, I don't mind, it's just the same as a B+W competing against a bird shot, or a portrait against a landscape. There's only one lens at the end of the day, so we all have to be the best of everything to get it...

ps, I don't think CR-guy would like the multiple-image-gallery idea, it specifically detracts from ad-revenue (4 ads per 15 entries or so) which is probably paying for the prizes. But either way, it didn't load for me anyway...

Brouno,

I know you meant well, but it was probably not appropriate to do this for two reasons:

I don't mean this as a personal criticism, I am certain that you did this as a well-intentioned service.  You might give this more thought, though.

I am in no way bad mouthing your comment, so please don't take it that way! I use elements to modify my photo's as I am not able to afford a tilt-shift, or an F2.8 or faster to blur backgrounds. I do try to tweak my colors a little as the lenses I do have are not very good. But I still have a passion to take photos as I just love to do it. And it's true about some of what you say, but I see it in a different way. I see it as a person with low quality lenses and trying to make them look better going against people who already have high-end gear.

OK, I'm done posting my 2 cents worth... And I do wish everybody best of luck with all the nice photo's that were posted. I looked at alot of them and they made me want to spend more time shooting like alot of you do.

Aheum, OK. I didn't think about these issues ...

Just i want to say that I didn't take any advantage doing that (no pub or either, it's a personnal website), and I doubt that this will keep ads income for canonrumors guy (did you browse all forum pages ?)

No matter, access is no more possible.

I wonder what system he is using to browse the images. If he is using the forums, and marking his choices that way, it will be a few months before he could go through them all. I'm hoping he had a way to batch download them and rate them in Bridge or LR. When I'm culling wedding images I can go through about 1,000 an hour. At that speed CR guy could be done with initial culling in only 13 hours!

This is a seriously big task, thanks CR guy for putting this on.

Well for the first time I got a chance to do a wedding in the bahamas, and one in Astoria, Oregon. All for 2012! I don't have money for lenses yet, but in time I will make the money, I hope! For now I will have to rent, for major photoshoots because my 30D will not cut it, even though it is iconic camera! Winning this contest would make a whole lot of headaches go away. . .. but it just never works out like that haha :(

Whomever wins this contest, I hope it is a person down on his/her luck in terms of money and gear. . . . it would make me happy, even if it weren't myself.

peace.

I'm with you on that one, but it's hard to win a contest like this when you are going up against those who have 5,000 to 10,000 dollars in high end gear.

Truly going to be a tough choice, as I saw some very nice photos that I will have to get ahold of the shooters to see how they did some of them. Very impressed.

Good luck to all the entries.

Ehh, I disagree.
I've seen incredible photos taken with a phone. Infact, I read an article not too long ago of a photo that won a half a million dollar contest.  The camera used?  A samsung phone.

Infact, Chase Jarvis, winner of 'Photographer of the Year' this past year has an entire portfolio on his website of his iPhone photos.

Never let your equipment limit yourself as a photographer.

No troll here. I was trying to add a little levity to the thread--aka, it was a JOKE. Congrats to the first 20 finalist pictures!!! They are truly fantastic.  The interesting part is that 20 pictures does not equal 20 finalists in any way... special congrats to both 5D Freak and Waso, both with 4 pictures each out the 20 pictures selected.  You two alone have 40% of the pictures so far chosen.  Congrats to you both.

Best regards,

I believe that, regrettably, most people assumed a big portion of the rules... it was clearly stated that you could enter as many times as you wanted in each category.  The only part not straightforward clear to me was that if you could enter the same picture in two categories, since the phrase: "if you don't know in which category it belongs, write me", which suggested that each photo could only be submitted on a single category.

I certainly entered more than my fair share of photos, but none of them anywhere near the standard of those ones (underwater and astro both got the least amount of entries, takes a fair bit of specialised equipment although I still think I had a few in each).
Not sure if I entered any shots in more than 1 category, it didn't say it wasn't allowed though.

Love all the shots so far, keep them coming CR-guy...

Note the order in which he's announced the finalists:
Astrophotography, 13 pages of entries; Underwater, 16 pages of entries were the first two, and so on.
And the 5 that are left?
Street, 75 pages; B+W, 82 pages; Wildlife, 109 pages; People, 134 pages; Landscape, 171 pages (coincidentally, almost all categories I didn't bother with, too much competition)

There's more entries in Landscape than in Astro, U/Water, C/Lighting, Macro, and Abstract all together (presuming they're all valid entries, of course).

I think there's going to be a fair gap until we see the last of these finalists, it's an absolutely massive undertaking...

Personally even if I dont get a picture in the top ten I'll have still enjoyed the buzz of 'maybe'.

Like a lot of people I take lots of pictures which very few other people get to see let alone judge. Also having looked through the remaining categories I honestly can't see how one could pull out the best ten. The level is so consistently high throughout. There are some killer shots there which wont make the top ten for sure.

Thanks CR for the opportunity and thrill of the chase!

Also having looked through the remaining categories I honestly can't see how one could pull out the best ten. The level is so consistently high throughout. There are some killer shots there which wont make the top ten for sure.

Thanks CR for the opportunity and thrill of the chase!
very true.
I know I don't stand a chance having seen the finalists. But one needs to start some day...
great event.
thanks for all the work

these finalists pictures are indeed very good, can't wait for the people and landscape categories! - its gonna be a massive headache to decide which ones to choose

when are the other categories being announced? Been an odd silence lately

I'll repeat what others have said:  I'm honored that my shot made it among the finalists, what an awesome group of photos!  Even if I don't make it to the next phase, I've thoroughly enjoyed the contest.  And my favorite part is seeing these amazing shots.

I will say one thing, I'm not thrilled at the 700 pixel size limit.  I kind of hate seeing some of these photos so small (especially my own), because I feel the details are lost.  In this competition, there is certainly an advantage to simple shots, with a clear/large subject.

I guess you missed this from yesterday (just 4 posts above yours):

I'm back to judging tomorrow, there has been a big thing going on with my other venture Lens Rentals Canada. I don't think I've slept in 72 hours as things get restructured and negotiated.

I may sleep tonight. :)

Thanks for the patience, kind words and criticisms.

I did indeed, that's what I get for using an hp touchpad. Thanks nonetheless, great entries so far by all :-)

Otherwise it had been unfair towards good photographers that own low end cameras only (not everybody can afford a 1D). I am in the fortunate position to own one of he really good toys, but there is still so much to learn and I am sure some people with PS cams were way more creative than I was...

I respectfully disagree, for the same reason I wouldn't want to watch a car race where all drivers are handicapped to drive under 70mph because they can't all afford the same level racecar.

(For the record, my photo was taken using a Rebel and non L glass)

At 72dpi which is the resolution for computer screens, it is near impossible for me to tell the difference between shot taken with a low end camera and a high end camera.  The lower resolution (instead of 300dpi for a print) can hide flaws from both the photographer and the camera, and most photos look good on a computer at 72dpi.   Just my two cents. :)

Just too bad. Then avoid all car races, as they usually have such limits. Plus you should know better, that speed is not all that matters in car racing.
Look closely at F1 races. Are there any more prestigious racing events?
There are very detailed regulations and limits to cars construction. Cars do differ, but they have limits to engine power, cars weight must be within given limits, all teams use the same tyres, must use both tyre types in race... list goes a long way.
All for good reason - to narrow down competition to engineers skills within given limits, to skills of pitstop teams, skills of drivers and their ability to cooperate.
IMHO you missed it with car racing comparision.

It was intended to be a simple analogy.  If I knew it was offensive to die hard racecar fans, I'd have chosen a different one.

I think the point in both is to say that they test the skills of the person, not the technical assets or budget.

Different one would not work too. ;) (plus I don't care much about car racing or cars at all)
Whatever sport contest you would choose as analogy there are still limitations and regulations on them, to underline specific qualities and compensate for other factors. When contest is about technology, then there are limits to budgets, or similar.

Back to photography:
When you test cameras, you shoot with the same lens, same subjects, same ISOs, ect. to have comparision.
When comparing lenses it is logical to test on the same body, and on same subject.
Or not?

On the other hand, photo equipment does matter, but does not help with composition, subject, story, ect. which make photos stand out.

More important issue is definition of "photo" itself, how much PS was involved and how many shots per picture were used.

Plus don't forget that the forum width just happens to be 700 pixels wide, so all the images load inline and you don't have to click on them individually, the thumbnail and bigger-versions would have added a lot to the server-load.

It also means everything gets judged on composition, framing, and lighting, which all photo competitions get judged on, not the quality of the glass/body.

And also, don't forget what would have happened if he'd specified every photo to be 2000px wide. There'd probably be an uproar from people who didn't want to post that good a quality version of their stuff, for fear that someone would steal it and claim it as their own (I've never posted anything online wider than 1000px for that reason).

Those are all valid reasons for the contest rules governing photo size.  And I completely understand the decision to standardize all photos to this common [somewhat small] resolution.  My point is that this is inherently disadvantageous to photos which feature small, yet significant, details.  I believe my own photo falls under this catagory.

A necessary evil, perhaps.  It doesn't appear that too many others are bothered by it.

I know what it is like, my wife under-estimated 3 gigs she is busy with (good thing is she under-estimated the revenue too), so right now she is not sleeping, and our dining room table is covered with stuff that has to get out to clients... and at the lab they just pull out my wife's prints as I walk in the door!

It's a good problem to have, but you spend a lot of time wondering why you are doing this to yourself.

Good luck!  I hope you get some sleep soon!

I have been hugely impressed by the vast majority of the images that have made it into the final ten in each category.
Very many were just absolutely awesome. A few were not to my taste, but I could see why they were picked.
Congratulations to all the finalists.

Some exceptional images there and best of luck to the finalists. One or two of the selections left me a bit baffled I must admit but they'll get filtered out in the next stage.

Wildlife carries the highest standard by far in my opinion and it will be a hard call to pick the top 1.

Interesting times ahead!

The folks at Gura Gear have donated a Gura Gear Kiboko 22L to the winner of the Landscape category. Congratulations zedarean!

Um...holy crap, am I reading that right!? I honestly didn't even think I'd make it to the finalists, let alone win an awesome prize! But...how do I claim it? Are you going to pm the winners for their addresses when the judging is complete? I can't thank you guys enough for this!

I have to admit I often looking at contest once it gets past the entries stage since the judging tends to drive me insane but the winners here all look very nice, nice judging! And of course a shout to all the photographers, that goes without saying!, but I think, for once, this time the judges need to get some praise too!

Wow, how was the turnout for this comp! I think all the Canon Rumors followers should be proud of the images the we have come up with. Yeah, we might cop the gear freak thing, but great to see that we do actually go out and shoot some great photos too!

Thanks to CR guy for putting on this comp. I think he had more than he bargained for, but well done for getting through all the images at such a busy time of the year! Judges have had a huge job and congrats to an awesome effort and balanced judging. Well done! Congrats to all the division winners too. Good luck for the final prize!

I would love to see a comp like this again! Happy new year to all :-)
