I took this in the Serengeti at around 10pm on July 24, 2011.  There were hyenas roaming around my campsite at this time, but my safari guide told me they wouldn't bother me.  The stars were so breathtaking, and there was no light pollution around, so I had to take photos regardless.

Star trails on the Flights Path. Combined from Ninety different 30 second exposures.

The rotation of earth is shown by the movement of the stars... the fact I am on the flightpath in to Newark airport is shown by the planes that flew all over the image :-)

"Peering Into Time"
Milky Way Rise over Indian Rock Arch in Yosemite National Park. I just managed to capture a break in the clouds for a few minutes. The clouds near the horizon were lit up by light pollution and provided some nice contrast to the dark sky. Arch was lit up manually with 430 EX II.

Star trails (exposed for 150min) as the dawn breaks at Coolum Beach. This is a full 360 degree panorama with the south celestial pole to the right and the north celestial pole below the horizon to the left. To my knowledge, this is the first time this has been done without using a fisheye lens. Original image is over 100MP.

Kilauea Volcano Halemaʻumaʻu Crater's molten lava lake glows within the Spiral Arm of our home galaxy
Volcanoes National Park, Hawai'i

5DMII, 24 1.4 II @ f2, 30 seconds, iso 1600

This panoramic stitch consists of 7 full-frame (24mm) photographs captured from the cliffs of the Kilauea Iki crater. The world's largest shield volcano, Mauna Loa, can be seen to the right of the lava glow. Mauna Loa is an impressive 56,080 ft tall if you consider the mass below sea level. It is 13,679 ft above sea level with a prominence of over 7,000 ft and yet it doesn't appear very massive due to the gradually sloping build common to Shield Volcanoes. The dark sky and lava combo was a pure delight to experience while on vacation in late August 2011.

Milky Way passes behind a lone tree along the Chain of Craters.
Volcanoes National Park, Hawai'i

5DMII, 24 1.4 II @ f2, 30 seconds, iso 1600, FG illumination provided by my headlamp (positioned about 100ft from the camera, perpendicular to the lens)

I noticed this tree during my first afternoon exploring the Chain of Craters and was determined to return during the night. The first night was misty and wet, but the 2nd night unexpectedly offered pristine, clear skies after a rain storm passed through after sunset. My initial goal was to shoot time-lapse, but I quickly realized that VNP offers infinite photo opportunities (couldn't commit to a single location for TL) and I was the only one on the roads that night. Visiting from the SE mainland-- plagued with light pollution--- VNP felt like a giant dark-sky playground enclosed by lava flows and new growth. For one night, I had the rare privilege to enjoy it all to myself (no active lava flows bringing tourists after dark). Thank you for your blessing, Pele.

The setting galactic core of the Milky Way stretches over our tent near Green Sand Beach, South Point Big Island Hawai'i

5DMII, 24 1.4 II @ f2, 30 seconds, iso 2000

My wife and I enjoyed solitude all night long at our improv back-country camp @ Green Sand Beach on the southern most point of the Big Island. After a gloomy sunset, the clouds parted for clear, dark skies all night long-- while we battled mini-sand storms at sea level.

I captured this image in between the two time-lapse set-ups of the Milky Way featured in this video:

Moon over Putrajaya, Malaysia

My monitor is correctly calibrated, so I can see that you cut and paste the moon in there. . . not that there is anything wrong with that, BUT I can see the black square when you cut the moon from another image ;)

since your screen obviously isn't calibrated correctly, if you make the image brighter, you can seee the sqare cut-out of the moon.

I only mention this so you can fix it, fi you want and not for anyother reason. I am not even entered in this challenge ;)
