Title: Preorder Canon EF 16-35 f/4L IS & EF-S 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 IS STM
Post by: Canon Rumors on May 13, 2014, 04:53:41 AM

You can now preorder the new Canon wide angle lenses from B&H Photo, Amazon and Adorama. By the looks of the MTF charts and the surprising price, the EF 16-35 f/4L IS looks like a real winner. Both of these lenses are expected to be released some time in June.

Canon EF 16-35 f/4L IS $1199: Amazon | B&H Photo | Adorama

Canon EF-S 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 IS STM $299: Amazon | B&H Photo | Adorama

Just ordered the 10-18.  It's 67mm filter size is the same as my 35 2.0 IS and the future 70-300L.  NICE.

$1199 for the 16-35 f/4L ...good job Canon. Obviously I'll wait for some reviews and then for places like BuyDig and what not to drop it under or right at 1k if its a winner.

I'm surprised at the better than expected prices.  The 16-35/4 would make a great family travel lens for me.

The STM is certainly fantastic, for a minimal weight kit. We have the two other STM zooms here, they are just great and perform well while traveling. We look forward to the new one. Pre-ordered of course.

For my production kit...
The 4.0 certain a great lens - so far I can tell based on specs, but for me it is more a great promise for a (hopefully) upcoming 2.8 III version of it (IS or not) -- I would buy it instantly.

This year will show hopefully a lot of new great glass.

Wondering if it is the outrageous initial price of the 24-70 f/4 IS that makes this 16-35 f/4 IS seem "reasonable."  After all, it sports quite a premium over the 17-40.  Not to say that it won't be worth it because it probably will be once the reviews are in, but just an observation...

If the MTF charts are any indication, Canon should have opened at the $1,499 of the 24-70 F/4 as many many many landscape people have wanted an autofocusing UWA with sharp corners for ages now.  They'd scoop a nice profit from that pent up large demand and then could walk the price down the $1,199 over the course of the year.

So I am a bit lost why Canon opened at such a fair price.  This isn't like them at all.

Mind you, I am not complaining.  At this current $1,199 offering, I may just buy this now and not wait for the reviews to justify the price.  I never do that.

I guess they made a smart move this time after seeing the result of overpricing the IS primes and 24-70 f/4 IS...and I'm betting that this lens price doesn't move much for at least a year.

The 1635 is lower than expected! Makes me want one to replace my 1740..

Maybe with the falling Yen and the, perhaps, initially slow sales of the 24-70 f/4 IS (other than during all the $900-$1050 sales) they figured they'd just start a bit lower. It might use smaller elements than the 24-70 too and it doesn't have the tricky built-in macro.

If the fix the weakness of 17-40mm (soft corner) , then this lens is very reasonable priced !

Why trade in the 16-35 f/2.8 for the f/4.0? Wouldn't you guys prefer the faster aperture?

Why trade in the 16-35 f/2.8 for the f/4.0? Wouldn't you guys prefer the faster aperture?

On one side, you have:

F/2.8 for 16-35 small DOF work (not a super common need)

F/2.8 for low light with moving subjects (events) or for faster shutter speed for sports

On the other side, you have:

A much sharper lens (according to MTF charts)

IS for low light with static subjects (3-4 stops of IS crushes 1 stop of lens speed in this regard)

     IS for videography

So the short answer is -- sports/event folks likely will always need the F/2.8, but so many other types of shooters just want a sharper lens and the IS is highly desired by about 50-60% of the CR forum I'd say (there are still some unconvincables that insist IS with wide angle is not needed).

But at what appears to be a very fair price, if the MTF charts pan out in real-world testing (and historically Canon is above board in this regard), this new lens will sell will like hotcakes.

I'm going to risk the wrath of the forum-members here and do a blatant double-posting... Sorry, but I'm just afraid that it'll get lost in the other thread, and I think it's an important question that I haven't seen asked or answered yet...

I pre-ordered the new Canon 16-35 f/4 based on how everyone was drooling over the MTF charts. My question now is, does anyone know of a lens whose sharpness/resolution did not live up to its good looking MTF chart? I'm just considering optical performance here; not AF, build quality, or anything other than image quality.

I'm going to be very interested to hear from all of you who have ordered the new 16-35mm lens in terms of how it performs. I have the Rokinon 14 mm, so I'm going to hold off on ordering Canon's newest ultrawide. But if it performs as well as it looks on paper, I think I know what my Christmas present this year is going to be. And maybe by then, there'll be a sale or rebate.

Heck no! I shoot wide angle mostly f/6.3-f/11. I'd rather get tops performance for that in a smaller size for less money and with IS.

Normally yes.  I enjoy taking low light/night photography without flash and I'd REALLY like an F2.8 with IS.  I shoot with a Canon 6D and also do video and with that sensor's low light capabilities coupled with an f4 plus IS PLUS sharper IQ (and smaller), I suspect that it would be a more versatile lens and probably still allow me to shoot about 95% of what I want while gaining some flexibility in shooting other things (EG slower shutter speed for handheld water effects, etc).

more a factor of the yen price - however canon is still subsidizing the united states with a far lower conversion rate than the rest of the world.

I also went ahead and ordered this new lens based on the MTF charts and optimism that it would be sharp in the corners at the wide end. One thing that leaves me just a little concerned is distortion. There is no mention of it anywhere in any of Canon's promo material. Those of us who process our RAW files with ACR won't see anymore updates to CS6 with a profile for this lens. I just hope that the distortion is at least similar enough to the existing 16-35 f2.8II that we can use its distortion profile to straighten out some lines when needed. I would hate to forced to subscribe to the cloud for just this one lens.

Wondering what exactly you need to hear in the reviews? Don't we already know:
1. It has the same build quality as other similar lenses
2. The IS will work fine
3. The corner sharpness is improved.
4. Handling will be same as other similar lenses
5. USM will work perfect.

What exactly do you need a review on? Curious! :)

DxO score maybe :P

To me, the MTF charts speak for itself. Just buy it, shoot it, like it then keep it. Don't like it then return it. It's quite simple... ::)
