Title: Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM + 2x Extender (II or III)
Post by: mackguyver on June 23, 2014, 01:24:22 PM
By request, here's a new thread for this combination.  All of my shots are with the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM + 2x Extender III with the 5DIII or 1D X.  I haven't had a chance to get much use out of this set, but here are a few samples:

Beautiful images! The 300 with the 2x extender seems to be a great combination.  I use the 2x III with my 70-200 and I find that works great in a pinch.

Those look great. I have the 2x II and have tried to use it on my 200mm f2 among other lenses. I find the 2x II about as useful for taking pictures as a hammer:). Looking at your images, however does spark a bit of interest in the 2x III.

My 1.4x II on the other hand get's quite a bit of use.

I do however get a significant amount of CA on my 1.4x II under harsh mid-day lighting conditions and have considered getting a 1.4x III to see if it's any better.

All in good time...

Attached is one of the very first shots I took with my 300 F2.8 + Mk3 extender. Note this file is unedited, I have merely JPEGed it and scaled it for web.

For IQ comparison purposes, here's some shots from my 300 2.8 non-IS with 2x TC mkII

Personally, I don't think the IQ differences are too tremendous but the IS, lighter body, and improved AF of the 300 2.8 IS II probably result in a lot more keepers than I get with this ancient artifact

These are beautiful images by all accounts.  I do see slight iq degradation, especially in looking at the fine details in the feathers and hairs of the animals, compared with what the 300 2.8 II can do alone.  I don't know how much of this is due to downgrading of the image to get posted.

I would be proud to take these pics, don't get me wrong, but I really love when you can see every hair, or very fine feather quill and vein.

You would lose even more fine details without the 2xTC. You have to get twice as near without the TC to resolve the same level of detail. I like also to capture every detail of feathers, but you have to get close enough to do so, and the 2xTC lets you do it at twice the distance.

I've only made 3 trips out to the river valley with my Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM as I have only had it for a few weeks, got the  2x Extender 111 along with it.These are my first shots with the combo. Taken with a 1DX.
As an aside, I have a healthy respect for anyone who has mastered BIF with a 600mm focal length, be it with an extender or a bare lens, it was a dismal first attempt for me.
Keeping your quarry in the lens field of view requires a steadier hand and a sharper perspective than I ever would have anticipated. Going to take more than a bit of practice.

Here's what I do with my 70D.  I typically shoot in manual mode - 1/1000, f/5.6 (with 2xiii), and auto-ISO.  Sometimes I dial in the ISO for the lighting conditions.  I use IS mode 3 on the lens; it seems to give better results than mode 1.  I do shoot handheld.  I use AI-Servo mode, and I use high-speed continuous shooting.  Eagles are pretty easy; their movements are reasonably predictable.  Something like a swallow is very hard!  Practicing on anything moving helps a lot.

Thanks for the advice, I've not tried the IS mode 3 yet.
I have heard that keeping one eye on the viewfinder and one on the sky is a good habit to adopt for BIF, I'll try incorporate that also.
Plan on practicing a lot on our seagulls and crows just as soon as I can figure out how to get them to sign a model release ;D

I get my share of very sharp close ups, seeing the barbs on the feathers, the rings around the eyes etc. But, it is just as much fun catching a scene at low resolution. On Saturday I went for a walk with my son and grandson and saw for the first time fledgeling barn owls, which I have been trying to see for the past 5 years, but always missed them. Here they were and I was able to swing the 5DIII and 300mm/2.8 + 2 xTC into action hand held (iso640, 1/320, f/5.6). You can't get closer than about 50-60 metres, and you could barely make them out by eye. But, here is a nice memory, and my son immediately took it as a screen saver. Went back yesterday with my new monopod for assistance, but the birds were gone again.

Their faces occupy only 90x90 pixels. Without the 2xTC you would hardly resolve their eyes.

It is so easy to cycle with the lens at the ready. I use the Canon supplied strap through the lugs of the lens, sling the shoulder section round the right hand side of my neck with the camera and lens dangling at the left hand side of my waist. The camera and lens don't waggle around too much while I am cycling and I can quickly stop and swing the camera up for a shot. The twin lugs hold the lens much better than does a Black Rapid, which is fine for walking but not for cycling. I have a nice cycle ride to the lab and take the 300+TC with me regularly in the hope of seeing something worthwhile.

I use a dual camera strap to walk trails and dikes with my 300ii and extenders and handhold most bif pics so the lighter weight and size works perfect for what I do but would still like to get the 600 f4ii but that's got to wait for awhile for added reach.

Thanks and my PP tool of choice is DxO.  I'm able to process about 90% of my work using it alone, but will use PhotoShop CC if I need to do additional work like compositing, portrait retouching, and such.  With my wildlife and landscape photos, I don't do any cloning or retouching, so DxO does it all for me :).

So you only apply the lens profile module (300 + ext 2.x) in DxO for those photos? Nothing else?

Personally, I often apply a variety of corrections in DxO – exposure, WB, vibrance, level and crop, etc.  However, with the exception of dust removal all of DxO's tools are global.  For local edits, I use CS6.

Same here, and there's no profile for the 300 f/2.8 IS II with or without extenders - hopefully someday, but the (auto-)corrections would be fairly minor - a bit of vignetting, a tiny bit of CA with the extenders.  The automatic sharpening with the lens profiles in DxO is really nice, however, and that would save me a lot of time tweaking the unsharp mask settings.

Finally got  chance to play a bit more with the 300 f/2.8 ii and the 2xTCiii (I've actually bee spending too much time with my real job).  I was really hoping to get the recent Super Moon but we had amazing storms and clouds obscuring the view.  Finally, the sky cleared after a couple of nights and I shot this.  I was so excited that I forgot my remote and used the 10 second delay, instead.  Some uprez, cropping and convert to B&W with Nik and here it is.  Maybe not the best but I've got about zero experience with any astro-photography so I am pleased.

I had my first outing with the 300/28 II + 2XTCIII  this afternoon since coming back from Canada on Tuesday where I was using the Tamron 150-600mm. The Canon feels a bit heavier! Here are two mugshots of an Egyptian goose. Why can't I see those fantastic bee eaters or have a bird of prey come and sit next to me?

300 F/2.8L IS (Mark 1) + Sigma 2x TC, 1/800, F/11, ISO 1250, 5DMIII
Shot from about 10-15 ft.  Really like the MFD of this combination vs the bare 600mm.

Dear friends
I'm from Spain and this is my first topic (so, excuse my English).

I'm looking for a lens for surfing photography and I don't know if the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM in combination with a 2x or 1,4x III will be enough.

Also I'm looking the EF 500 F4 IS USM (used).

My usual body is the Eos 5DsR but maybe with a 7D MarkII is a good option with crop factor.

It's not easy to decide. It's a lot of money and I don't know what to do

Thank you everybody for your help!  ;)

The 5Ds R IQ cropped is about equal to the 7D Mark II, I have been hard pressed to see any difference and I own both. That said the word "crop factor" is meaningless in this comparison. Just use the 5Ds R in crop mode if that is the framing you want. The reason to go with the 7D Mark II in your situation is frame rate, and that might be a very good reason.

I owned the 500mm F/4 and recently upgrade to version II. The improvement in image quality was marginal. The biggest difference is weight and image stabilization. I would imagine that IS wouldn't matter to you and you would most likely be shooting at higher shutter speeds or on a tripod.

Personally between the 300mm f/2.8K II with a 1.4x II or the 500mm F/4 IS II would take which ever gives  you the proper framing without the extender. Here in the US I can buy the 500mm used today for $4K us, the 300mm new is $6K and used 5K. So it is a cheaper option as well.

Funny, I never noticed this thread.  Since maybe 60% of my shots are with 300 2.8 II X2 III I should have been posting.  Here is one from last May with the 1D4 at Haida Gwaii.  Af was not the greatest; if you lost it it was lost but I got a lot of flight shots by pre-focussing to the anticipated distance and then hitting the back button when the bird was under the red square(s).  Usually center point with expansion.  Can't wait to have this lens combo with the 1DX II!

300 f/2.8L II IS with 2x III extender, 5DsR 1/1000 f/5.6 ISO3200
This shot is a little noisy, I normally try to keep my ISO at 1600 or lower with the 5DsR.

It is clear that this lens and extender combination does work exceptionally well. I have on many occasions thought of trading in my 300mm lens and buy the mkii 600mm lens and whilst this lens is sharp I cannot justify the price. I have also tried both the Tamron and Sigma 600mm telephoto zoom lenses only to be disappointed by the sharpness beyond 400mm.
This is a grey headed kingfisher taken in Kenya, camera used was a 5dmkiii. Cropped image.

Lovely image and very sharp. Is it a 100% crop or have you reduced it?

Thanks Alan, much appreciated this is a 50% crop. This bird did allow slow movement of our vehicle to make our approach. Wish all birds were the same. On another issue how do you find this combination with the 7d mmii?

My 300/2.8 II + 2xTC III was very sharp and contrasty with the 5DIII, but disappointing with the 7DII. It isn't so hot on the 5DS R either. I prefer to use it with the 1.4xTC III, when it is stunning, on the 5DS R.  I have been very lucky in finding a Sigma 150-600mm C that is of very high quality and am tending to use that or the 100-400mm II currently. I am interested in what the 5D IV will do and may trade in the 7DII.

Alan I thought I had read on a previous post that you were unhappy with the performance on the 7dmkii. I like you are awaiting the arrival of the new canon 5d mk1v. I am off the the Pantanal in August and am wondering about camera bodies. I only have the 5d mkiii at present and am looking at another camera body to take. Given that the 5d mk1v is not likely to be on sale until I return from Brazil I am left with the 7d or 5ds, dilemma.
Not sure about crop any longer as have been spoiled by full frame.

The Pantanal is paradise - I would love to go again. The 5DS R is my choice over the 7DII. Noise levels seem better, I notice an improvement in sharpness, the AF is definitely better, and the wider field of view is a plus. The 7DII does have more fps if you need it and the file sizes are more manageable. If you can afford the 5DS, it is worth it.

Now I suspect we'll be inundated by 300 X2 shots from JR! ;)

Hey Alan,  I allowed my 1DX II to slip by and got bumped on the pre-order list since I'm just too busy before fall.  However, I've ventured out for a wee break a few times this week and have been reminded that there can be AF hunting with the 6D, so for sure I'm chewing at the bit since reports are the 1DX II hardly slows down.  Not to mention the AF of the 6D overall is a real hindrance.

It's worse than "anticipation"! :(

Hi Alan,

Yes this was on the 1DX II. The autofocus is very fast and spot on even with the 2X ... using the focusing limiter, the AF is almost as fast as with the 100-400 II. Another couple of shots taken in my yard -

Thanks Jack.

The fact that I can handhold this lens for a considerable periods of time was one very important consideration in my purchase. Additionally, I feel this lens serves three focal lengths of 300mm @ f/2.8, 420mm @ f/4 and 600mm @ f/5.6 with stellar IQ. Each focal length has its own uses and as such, this is a 3 in 1 lens to me.

J.R., Now if it would just magically zoom from 300 to 600 without gaining weight or price ..... ;)  Using just 300 and filling the frame is awe inspiring but that means being pretty close to the subject unfortunately.

Since you've got what I want, the camera and lens combo, it would be very helpful if you could add the core shooting and cropping info once in a while.  It's very comforting to hear the 300 X2 is not losing AF speed because with the 1D4 it surely did IF it wasn't just snapping from close to bang on.  Lose the bird to the sky and there wasn't a hope of getting it back.

I thought I'd better contribute to this thread. Saturday, the Red Bull Cliff Diving competition was jumping from the roof of the Copenhagen Opera Theater.

I was shooting from the general public viewing area, from the other side of the harbor - about 180m away. I guess I could have used a 600mm + 2x TC to get closer  ;D

First diver is Mike Hunt (UK, and the winner of this event), the second is Michal Navratil (CZ, 6th place)

Mikehit, Jack Douglas, thanks for your kind words.

FWIW, they're diving from 27m above the seawater.

I think the second shot was my best from the day. The series of 8 shots of that dive are just nailed, contrary to a lot of the other dives. This was my first time shooting cliff diving, and not just shooting but processing them have been an interesting learning experience.

For one thing, the most advanced/highly scored dives certainly isn't the most photogenic dives. The 'simple' dive in the second shot makes this quite easily.

Secondly, the beginning of the jump is the best part, from a shooting point of view. Once they pick up speed, you can almost just not bother shooting as the picture will get 'too busy'.

I should have done a DoF calculation before the start (DoF=30m!), set the focus on the edge of the platform and be done with it (MF).

Shot with 1DX and 300mm f/2.8L II + 2x III.

I love this combo, but I really need a longer lens to get the tight shots. The pro's were generally using 600mm+1.4x on FF cameras, and I'm on the far side of the safety fence with "only" 600mm :(

Not that I know much but I'd say you're doing just fine.  It's mind boggling how the bikes don't slide out.  Guess the rider keeps the angle just vertical enough.

Thanks Jack. It's just a game of "I want more". The 1DX has significantly stepped up the quality and number of keepers, so now it's the reach I'm looking at. A less expensive option is to work on my panning skills and lowering the shutter speed  :)

As for not sliding out, the outright record for lean without crashing is ~68 degrees (Marc Marquez), and seeing 64 degrees during the race weekends is common. Tires, bike weight, weight distribution (and hence: acceleration), tarmac, banking and elevation changes all impact the lean angle you can carry.

What I have heard is that even with standard slicks (=tires without threads), ordinary trackday riders can touch down the elbow. There's a 5 year old video on youtube where a rider drags his helmet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ov43cWkYIA) for fun.

I gonna post up a few more shots later.

Thanks for that.  Very interesting.  I used to ride; Hondas, 300 for many years -> 750/4 -> 500 Silver Wing then gave it up.  Never like that or I'd be dead for sure.  Only later in life did I rationalize that the bike needs to be more vertical than the body.

TT Assen, Turn 3 again. Bradley Smith (Yamaha) followed by Dani Predosa (Honda), Alvaro Bautista (Aprilia) and Danilo Petrucci (Ducati). If you think this is riding close, you're wrong; this is just free practice. During races a few (gentle) bumps is often seen.
Camera: 1DX, 300mm f/2.8L II + 2x TC Mk III.
Shot settings (from EXIF): 1/1000s, f/11, ISO1600.

Thanks Click, hbr and Jack.

AF performance is a little spotty with the 2x extender, so not really ideal for BIF, but it's the only way with my current kit to get decent reach.  I'd prefer to stick with the 1.4x, but that is seldom long enough.

I was pretty happy with that too but for BIF the 6D was a handicap.

I'm now happy with the 400 DO II and X2 (except for F8) but only know how it reacts with the 1DX2 since it won't focus at all with my 6D.  My 300 is not being used presently and I really should sell it.  Based on going used 300 prices my cost stepping up is about $1400 (CAD) or $1040 USD which isn't cheap but I really appreciate getting to 800.

800mm is really what I usually need for birds, I just can't get very close.  Ideally, I would have a 600 II with 1.4x, but not sure one of those in the cards.  I am planning (haven't convinced my wife yet, but I'm working on it) to get a 500 II by fall which would get me out to 700 or 1,000 with extenders, but 1000mm at f/8 would probably not AF that well on my body.

Does you 400 DOII with 2x autofocus pretty well?  Of course I wouldn't see the same autofocus performance you are getting with my 5DsR.

Bryan, I'm sure Alan F could give the best comment since he has both camera and lens.  With the 1DX2 400 is amazing, 560 is great and 800 is very good.  I never sense it's hunting unless of course there is simply nothing it's capable of focusing on.  However, only the center region of points are cross at 800 so if you use the others it's not as good (but they do work fairly well).

I seriously considered the 500 but cost and weight were not attractive to me.  I knew I could lug 300 X2 all day and so the 400 being the same weight and slightly smaller, was my choice.  I can't say I wouldn't like 500 but 600 would be a pain for my mobile preference.  I rarely use a tripod.
