To say that I love my 300 f/2.8L IS would be a major understatement.  If it was not for my wife, I think I might actually sleep with this lens.   ;D

I wouldn't, it's a bit hard when you roll over :P. Nioce shots, were those shots with a monopod or handheld? I find it's ok for short periods handheld, but it is on the heavy side when you can't put it down for a rest every now and again. Mine usually has a 1.4x extender attached for wildlife.

These were without extender.

Thanks.  These were shot hand held.  I find moving around the track with a monopod or tripod too restricting.

The Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) commonly abbreviated to just Night Heron in Eurasia, is a medium-sized heron found throughout a large part of the world, except in the coldest regions and Australasia  (where replaced by the closely related Rufous Night Heron, with which it has hybridized in the area of contact).

Adults are approximately 64 cm long and weigh 800 g. They have a black crown and back with the remainder of the body white or grey, red eyes, and short yellow legs. Young birds are brown, flecked with white and grey. These are short-necked and stout herons.

i am able to buy this lens second hand for 2.800 euros (to replace my 100-400). what do you guys think, is it way too much or should i try to get a little more off the price? or perhaps just do it.
i'm really hesitating about this one, since it's not for sale anymore the new II is still 3.500 euros more expansive.

I just found an FD 300mm f/2.8 L and plan to convert it to EF with the Ed Mika adapter.  Essentially the same lens but no AF or IS.  Also a fraction of the cost.  Here's hoping the IQ is as good as what's shown here!

+1
That's a very cool motorsport shot. Too many motorsport images come across as quite similar looking. It's not easy to keep coming up with different shots.

The f/2.8 300is has become one of my all time favourite lenses. The more I use it, the more diverse jobs I find I'm shooting with it. It really is an all-time classic. It's usefulness will probably increase for me with the transition from APS-H 1D4 to the FF 1DX.

But the lost reach with FF on the 1DX means I'll need to pony up for a new f/2.8 400 isII . Sigh...

Thank you Paul. Wish we had Formula 1 and other major motorsports events here. I would love covering them regularly.

Fortunate for us new guys the new f/2.8 400 isII is 1.52kg lighter than the previous model. Just wish it was 28% cheaper as well. :))

The EF 300 2.8L IS Gen1 is my favourite current autofocus lens.  The IQ size and handling is amazing.  The FD 300 2.8L is indistinguishable IQ wise to my pixel peeping ways but at this focal length and typical lens usage the autofocus and IS is  really quite an advantage.  I plan to keep both, the FD is much lighter and for casual shooting my first choice and the EF is when I have to have a high critical focus keeper rate at events I get paid for.

The Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) is a wading bird in the heron family Ardeidae, breeding in Africa, central and southern Europe, and southern and eastern Asia. The European populations are migratory, wintering in tropical Africa; the more northerly Asian populations also migrate further south within Asia. It is a rare but regular wanderer north of its breeding range.

Seriously good Image, well done.

In the Wild ?? (Safari) or in the Zoo/Wildlife Park ?? Not that it matters, just a superb example of what this Lens can do in the right Hands, I own the 200f/2, 300f/2.8 V2, 400f/2.8 V2 & just recently the 600f/4 V2, 50% of my shooting is with the 300f/2.8 V2, I feel it's the best Lens Canon have made to date.
