The lens is easy to use handheld.

The snow is pretty much gone, and plants are starting to come up, so I braved the cold wind today to snapa few handheld images with my 100mm L.  It was blowing hard, and two cold to spend much time, so there are not the best the lens can do.  Just natural light.  all were at f/8.

Its plenty sharp, but the depth of field is shallow as you get close, and its hard to focus precisely.  F/16 would have more of it in sharp focus.  Don't worry about losing sharpness at f/16, the increased depth of field will more than make up for it.

I find using my 100 for close up portraits is amazing, but you have to be careful, a lot of women don't like seeing everything in fine detail!

I just got this lens a couple of days ago (the L), and I'm just blown away.  I'm used to there being a noticeable change when I click the "Enable Lens Profile Corrections" box in Photoshop, and with this lens... nothing.

Ah, I was a bit confused.  I saw the thread title, but then I saw a few people had been throwing 100mm L shots in here too, and thought it had just become a combined thread.  Oops.

I got inspired to go play with bugs.  This is my 100mm 2.8 macro, a 5D2 and a 580exII.  I made a snoot with tube and a bowl to difuse light.  I need to make a better version of the snoot- I did not line it to throw light.  I plan on putting foil in it to bounce the light more.  Also, I need to play with on crop 7D for the reach.

Close-up of a flower bud on a "Lantana" plant.  I stacked the lens on top of two extenders, a 12 and a 25.  This is a crop from the original picture showing approximately 25% of the original.  Camera was a 40d.

What size is the moth? I know that some of the tropical moths grow larger, but then I suppose an elephant hawk moth we get here is pretty big (although I'm yet to see one, let alone try to photograph one.

We have some Chive plants in our front yard, and with a very late spring, they are just blooming.  Bees love them.  i do not have the patience to make a complex macro setup, I just walk up and shoot away.  The 100mm l is not really any sharper, but its easier for a person like me to get reasonably sharp hand held photos.

All of these are cropped to near 100%.

Scale...I've been debating whether or not to upgrade to the 100L, but I've read over and over again that it isn't any sharper...just like you said.  So the only advantage besides build Q is the IS, but don't you shoot handheld at 1/100 and faster when doing this type of macro?  (the walk up and shoot away kind- which is also my preference)

How?? Well I saw the object, Just the DoF button to find my favourite aperture and it was f/2.8 to get a smooth Background. After I used the continuos AF with ONE AF point fixed on the '"black thing", and went back a couple of centimetres (around 40cm from the object) to get the right Dof, turn of One shot AF and then I took a couple of shots, and cropped the image.

No mirrors, no indoors, no tripod. :)

This is a nice lens. While I use it for macro only, I occasionally used it for people photography - and then I got the 135 f/2. Since then, this has come out of the bag only for macro shots.

This was clicked with the 100mm f/2.8 macro earlier this year - my friend's new born.

Portraits?  You'll never go wrong with this lens.  It's just a little bit hard in my case because it's a little bit long for an APS-C when used for portraits and the AF is slow relatively if compared to 50mm F1.8 II (for portraits).  Taken with 500D + 100mm F2.8 lens, open wide.

I have a love affair with this lens. It's the first lens I got after having my body and 18-55mm kit lens for a while, and even when I have access to other lenses, this is still the lens I use 90% of the time, even though I only shoot on crop bodies (XSi and 40D)

As a owner of the 100mm L IS version of this lens, I thought I would take a look at some images made with the non-L 100mm macro. Well the excitement died quickly when I saw how many people, who use the L version, have hijacked this thread.

I did notice there is a tread for the L version. Are some of you posters just rude or illiterate? It does clearly state; Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM in the header of this thread. Pay attention because you have made this thread all but pointless since there is such a mix of images from both versions of this lens.

   Way to go hijackers!

How good is this lens at portraits? Moarrrr please, ;D like angox's.

Portraits?  You'll never go wrong with this lens.  It's just a little bit hard in my case because it's a little bit long for an APS-C when used for portraits and the AF is slow relatively if compared to 50mm F1.8 II (for portraits).

I have been following this thread for a while, and appreciate a lot of the photos in this thread, well done to many fine photographers. I have the Canon EF 100mm macro USM (non-L).

What was written above (which I've highlighted in red font) isn't my experience. My 100mm macro's AF is definitely quicker to focus than both copies of my Canon 50mm f/1.8 II - on either of my Canon DSLR's: 7D or 350D. Not as quick as my 70-300mm L, but it's not bad... better than eg a few Sigma telephoto zooms I've used.

If I limit the AF (ie so it doesn't search through the 'macro ranges') - the 100mm AF's quite snappy, at any subject distance- particularly on my 7D, but even on my 350D. I hated the slow, grindy, inaccurate AF of the 50mm f/1.8, so I got rid of both copies.

Here are a few recent macro photos I made with my 100mm nonL lens.
Note - there is also a Canon 100mm macro non-L, non-USM.... but it's quite old and not so many of those around anymore.
(PS - I have some great portraits with my 100mm macro lens too....)

Sorry but I've shot a a modelling stint (while walking on a platform) using 50mm F1.8.  However I can't use the 100mm F2.8 USM for that because once the model moves, your AF servo won't be able to track them anymore due to longer movements in the barrel.  Once the 50mm F1.8 got a lock using AF servo, the movement inside isn't that much so it's better for tracking movements.  It might be true though that during initial AF, 100mm maybe faster by a hair.  However it's entirely different once your subject moves especially if it's moving towards you.

Anyway, here's some more early morning shots.  This is really my favorite lens.

Some old, some new...  The best pics I like the most among my macros...  It's simply the best lens and most loved lens that I have.
AWESOME

Thanks!!!  One question though, will it be as good or better with FF?
I doubt anyone will see a difference in a image posted on the web ... but if you are printing then the difference in quality will be easily noticable.

Thanks man.  Actually I've got the answers now on my own since acquiring the 6D.  Yes, it's a noticeable difference once you print large.

The difference is in the aperture.

I took these shots today with my 5D Mark III.  With the cold weather coming on, these guys are very lethargic and let me work out the exact distance to get the best shot.  I've seen people get amazing close ups of insects where you can see the details in their compound eyes.  I never imagined I'd have one of my own that was this good.

Nicely done!  The flower served also as a nice background.  I don't know what aperture you used but a smaller aperture would make the eyes more defined if you want.  Just remember to bring a tripod or a small reflector/flash.  It will be easier to nail down the shot that you want.

Thanks for the tips.  I used f/2.8.  If you click on the image it will take you to my flickr account and you can see a larger version.  There you can see the full details on the eyes.  But if the bees are still around today I'll try something around 5.6 and see what improvements that can bring.

Ok, I went back this morning and the little guy was still there.  I tried a few other aperture settings.  This one was my favorite, at f/9.  As an added bonus, there were dew drops on his eyes.  You can also see his entire face now.  My daughter said, "Look, he's happy!"

I walk the dog, see a flower next to the path, take my camera with the mounted 100L into my hands and I'm sinking  into another world of fantastic colours and forms. I like this lens.
Nice pic, perhaps you could post it in the appropriate gallery, this is not for the 100L !

Hello and welcome, Slyham.

I like your pictures, especially the dandelion 1 and 2.
I think, I'll have to try something similar next year ;)

The Oxalis2 is the one I prefer from these two, because with the little bit bigger distance and the addition of background the composition is more appealing to me.

So, keep it up!

Since I just got the lens, I found myself always wanted to go full magnification, but as you point out, full magnification does not mean it will be the best composition. Thanks for the tip. :)

Thinking of getting this lens primarily for portrait attached to a 6D. It seems a few people are using if for portraits but most of the shots here are macro.
For those of you who own this lens with a FF camera, but aren't using it for portraits, what are you using? I am also at some point planning to get the 85mm but thinking of this one first.

This lens works well for portraits.  Before I got a better tripod, the 100L was about as heavy as I could go with the tripod, which was why I used it over the 70-200 II.  The bokeh isn't as nice as the 135L, but there is a lot value in being to focus close with the same lens.  The max mag. spec for the 135L is low.

Some of the recent portraits I've taken with this lens.  I've been using this lens for almost just every type of photography and it never failed me.  Just one word of advice... SHARP.  Sometimes this is just too sharp for its own good for portraits.  Some clients don't want their facial imperfections to show.  Luckily, it's easy enough to blur it through pp.

Thanks for the portraits. I tend to soften faces in PP anyways. I'm sure I won't be disappointed with this lens :-)

Not a macro shot, but this lens makes for a great portrait alternative.

Shot on 6D - at 1250 ISO. The high ISO performance of the 6D is insane !

It's so interesting to see the different editing choices that people use and how a focal length can be successfully used to fulfill the creative vision of people in so many different ways. Anyway, I captured this image a couple of weekends ago when we had some drizzly weather.

"Cheeky fly"

I was quite chuffed with myself having shot a series of images of this mantis stalking and grabbing a stink bug. When I reviewed the images I was astonished by a small fly that quite happily snuck in for a quick snack right under the jaws of the feeding mantis.  The fly there for at least 6 second because I see it in four successive images which were shot 2-3 seconds apart. Needless to say, if I was that size I wouldn't be anywhere near those jaws.
