Title: Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
Post by: ssriraman on November 07, 2010, 03:58:32 AM
Pictures taken using EF50mm f/1.4 USM. I use EOS Digital Rebel XTi / 400D / Kiss Digital X (and rare K236).

Ok, landscapes aren't what you'd normally use this lens for, but hey, it works!

Don't feel bad.  Sadly I just haven't been using this lens much.  I've been staying busy with the 100-400mm since birds are coming through again.  Here are a few odds and ends just to make you feel better.

I photograph our local school plays every year.  This is a very small school, but they all get into the play and have fun.  Lighting is typically dim, so fast primes are by far the best.

Eh!
I otherwise stay away from shooting the 50mm at f1.4 in the broad daylight but this time, I wanted to capture the unintentionally groomed trail that will give hikers a headache when they try to trek it in subfreezing temperatures.

Couldn't resist adding a few of my own - Since getting this lens, I've noticed my focus is off slightly at f1.4-1.8, but moving to AFServo appears to be sorting the issue - I'm just not used to such shallow DOF !  I'm generally pleased with the colours and ease of use, just be a bit odd not having zoom !

Probably my favorite lens. Razor sharp after f/2.2 and the perfect focal length. Though I do like bringing it down to f/1.4 because it's so shallow and so soft it almost looks like a painting.

Received this lens last friday, so I haven't had that much time to try it out yet, but even considering the thrill of new glass, it is really good. But of course, since it's my first lens faster than f/1.8, I've mostly shot it at f/1.4... It gets really sharp stopped down a bit, though. It might be stuck to the camera all winter if I'm not careful. :)

I found this lens to be the most useful for the landscapes around Tromsø, although the 24mm was better of course for the northern lights.

Also, I too love the 50mm landcape.

Thanks Branden. I like Norway, but then I'm probably biased, as I lived there for ten months. Tromsø may not be everyone's cup of tea though, as for two months in the winter, the sun doesn't rise, but then you get amazing blue light when it's clear and around two hours of pre-dawn (or post-sunset, whichever way you want to look at it) instead, although that may disappear around the solstice. It's the opposite in summer, with the midnight sun.

Great shots Leon! How do you get such a nice gradient-esque background? Is that done in studio or in post?

Getting my 1.4 tomorrow!  I had used/loved my 1.8, but people love the bokeh and AF of this lens so much, I sprang for it.

I own other primes, just didn't feel like the 1.2 warranted the additional 1200 slices of chedda when the 1.4 is so beloved by everyone.

Right I would say this shot isn't showing off any real capabilities of the lens, Surely this should be posted under lighting examples?
First thing I pick up on is that the model is far too close to the background ( that shadow is plain wrong unless you are going for a fashiony ring flash look) , and the lighting is positioned badly. is this using on camera flash ? Generally for corporate portraits you'd use more Rembrant (45-60 deg) with a big softbox or even & softer more natural lighting that might consist of a soft fill just off and above one side then maybe an umbrella giving a slight cripsness and shaping from the other side. Also the background should be far enough away to be lit with another possibly gridded or softboxed head.
Is this one of your first attempts at this type of work ? One thing you have done well is making your subject look bright , happy and at ease which is for some the most difficult part of professional people photography.

What you should do is read up on corporate styles of lighting and techniques and google for the best corporate photographers and really study what they are doing with lighting, posing backgrounds and props.
Now this isn't a really bad job but is quite basic and there's many elements that need to be thought about. This could be 10x better with a little more planning and experience in lighting .

Keep on working! :)

I completely agree with klickflip. This shot looks very flat due to bad lightning. Also, eyes are red! In good shot eyes have to have 'blicks'.

I also have Canon 50 mm 1.4 lens these lenses are really good. However, when you use aperture of 10 and more you are not applying these lenses for which they are designed (bokeh, shooting in dark light, etc.).

Be constructive guys...  His post is very simple and does not suggest this is a master shot. Just that he made one.

I like the crispness of the shot but I agree that the subject looks plastered to the background...no 3D effect that is so easy with this focal length. Also, in corporate portraits you generally don't want to emphasize cleavage or the farmers tan.

Beyond that, perhaps the OP can share a bit about the lighting and its placement with regard to the subject.

The hands are too stiff, and the broken wrist needs to be softened up. That's the biggie...have her step closer to the prop, rest her left arm on it and gently drape her right hand on top - be sure the fingers are relaxed and natural!

It's been a while since I used this lens, but it had almost exclusive use the weekend before last. I've since reprocessed the first one to tone down the pink reflections in the model's face.

Ahh yes, rough bokeh, purple fringing, unreliable AF motor... was a lot of fun to use on my T1i back when "large aperture" was all new to me and on APS-C it performed rather well even wide open. But on FF it needs to be stopped down to the point where you'd ask yourself why you didn't settle with a zoom instead? Stopped down, the lens is indeed excellent from F/2.8 onwards, but why on earth get a fast prime which isn't so usable at it's native fast speed?

I'm confused. So are you telling yourself that your lens needed adjustment, so you adjusted it on a 5Diii and are now using it again on your T1i and think the lens is now "adjusted" via the other camera?

In any case - it's a nice lens. If it came with better build quality I would have likely never switched to the 50L. Still using a 70s/80s FD 50 1.4 with film which in fact is really the same lens still only much better built than the plastic EF cousin.

I've posted this before in the Landscape thread but thought it might had to the 50/1.4 one as it fitted the bill perfectly when shooting straight into the light.

A six frame panoramic taken with 5DII + 50/1.4 @f11 1/10th, ISO 100. Each frame is the same single exposure, no bracketing, just exposed to lose the very highest highlights, working to the strengths of the Canon chip. Even in this situation 11.5 stops of DR is plenty. Another 2 wouldn't have held the sun.

Nice work Sporgon ;)

I owned f1.4 for 2-3yrs. Nice lens.

Thanks Dylan. Regarding the 50/1.4 I didn't mention it was on manual focus.

Partly because I wanted it on about 8 metres to get maximum dof at f11,

But mainly because the AF has the common 50/1.4 failing : it's broken.

Really must get it sent in some time  ;D

Love/hate this lens. It is a great piece of glass when it nails focus. And in this case it did.
Can´t wait for the Sigma 50 /1.4 Art and see how it compares to the 50 /1.2 L.

Couple shots that I was pleased with. My girlfriend sells jewellery as a hobby, I took some pictures so she could sell on the internet. Not bad for this poor creaky lens, but the 100 L macro is one of the next lenses on my list.

Logan, get a 12mm extension tube for the 50mm, at f8 it is just as sharp as the 100L Macro, and a tube is much cheaper.

Playing about with my daughter's 1100D. I'm surprised by how much latitude there is in the RAW data. I can pull it around much more than I thought would be possible.

This is just one exposure, no flash, shot on the 50/1.4 @ about f2.8. ISO 200
Bokeh looks good. 2008 is when I first got introduced to dslr. 40d and 50mm f1.4

...with canon 30d

1. second image was captured in very dimply lit environment (to see how far i can push my ability to hand hold, with violation speed 1/50s, while trying to capture...)

2. canon 430ex ii was used with last image (on camera flash)

Thanks Dylan, I find the bokeh of the 1.4 lens can be quite good if the scene is right.

Here's one that I just couldn't resist; shot at f1.6

I start seeing the point of sharpness is not everything in photography ;D

Needed a serious fix of colours after the bland months of almost-winter. Visited the fruit and vegetables market down in the southern parts of my home town.
Shot some bell peppers and tomatoes. Colourful veggies..

Bought this lens about a year ago. I took about 20 photos with it (wide open) and was extremely dissapointed with it. Not sharp enough! Then i went through this post two weeks ago and decided to try it again. Used it excusively for the weekend. I am sold. The soft focus wide open now a positive instead of a negative. Great bokeh. I took some really plain snapshots that came out with a pop that was not planned. Still playing with it, now actually planning some shots with it and it is (suprisingly) fast becoming a favorite. It is never too late to learn how to use a lens properly. Pin sharp lenses is not the be all and end all I believed them to be.

How did you afma it?

I afma it on 70d and 7dii. It did take a lot more effort on the 70d, the focus was more incosistent. On the 70d I did it at f1.4 and then again at f2.8 and  used the average. Is it a good approach? The lens i have is a lot sharper at f2.8. But still love using it at f1.4

A completely different use for this lens. We were camping near a waterhole in Botswana when we heard a lot of elephant around us. There was moonlight but too dark to see where they were exactly. Took photos in all directions to be able to see where they were. We were completely surrounded! Not great photos by any means, the focus was way off and handheld (F1.4, 0.6sec, iso 12800) but at least we could see in the dark!

After trying the original Canon 50mm F1.8 II, and the new 50mm F1.8 STM, I swapped it for an older used 50mm F1.4 and couldn't be happier.

It's sharper than the two mentioned lenses at all the faster apertures ( wider than F2.8 ).

Here is a quick test shot (with my old 1D mark II) right after getting this lens.... wide open @ F1.4.
