Post by: ssriraman on November 07, 2010, 04:03:14 AM
Pictures taken using EF300mm f/4L IS USM. I use crop body XTi.

That's fantastic. It looks like one of my uncles. He didn't want his picture taken either.  Nice result with a 1.4X.

If we still had Karma I'd give you +1.4

Really, the f/4 300is is one of the true sleepers in the Canon L range. It's an absolute bargain.
I regret selling mine when I upgraded to the f/2.8 300is. The f/4 takes up as much room in the bag as a 70-200 f/2.8 and weighs a LOT less. So you tend to take the f/4 with you more often.

There's a solid argument for having both Canon 300's.  Most f/4 300's are pin sharp wide open. I want another one!

That's some spot on focus right there!  I could've tried that shot 20 times with my T1i and unless I got incredibly lucky, would never have walked away with a photo so sharp and clean.  Time for some new glass I guess (Ignoring my serious 5d mark iii lust)

Anyways just out of curiosity, was body was this on?  And were you using AI Servo? Great shot btw  ;D

Since we're beyond karma and "my gear is better" I hope we can discuss this in cool blood :-) ... so: For this image size, I think the sharpness of the best zone (the hairs) is like than my 70-300L = 480mm without tc. But it's hard to say due to motion blur because 1/500s is the absolute minimum for 420mm, I try to have at least 1/1000 for shots of this kind - for this reason and if I'd have shot this one I'd have scrapped it for bad iq.

Which makes me want to point out again: A very good or even the best tc at lest at decent iso seems to be an aps-c sensor, and even if I ever upgrade to ff I'm likely to keep my crop camera for tele shots.

yeah i hear ya but to clarify a bit
its a crop, not resized.
I didnt scrap it because its still a funny shot
I was shooting mainly with the 600 on a gimbal and the 1D
i just had the 5D2 and the 300+tc on a strap at my side to grab periferal stuff like this
i should have had a higher shutter speed you are absolutely correct

I wish they would release a new version of this lens with the new hybrid 4 stop IS
you can notice the older IS is quite slow and clunky
it's compact size and weight make it awesome and I love the built in lens hood.

I'll have to post a picture I took last week of a Koala Bear with my 300mm F/4 with Canon 1.4x (5Dm2) to see how they compare.

hehe thanks, it was on a 5Dmk2 center point spot focus just single shot no servo action

+1  When they do release an EF 300mm f/4L IS II, it better still have the built-in hood!  :D

Here's a wide-open shot from last March, right from my kitchen window:

what I find really strange is people seem prepared to sell this lens for half of what they are new.
I quite often see them for sale between $800 and $1000
I only paid $800 for mine second hand and for the cost there is no cheaper way to hit 300mm or 420mm with TC keep AF and high image quality.

... which proves that contrary to popular opinion, even L lenses (or metal bodies) are not indestructible and it's a good idea to have some kind of backup available if your safari relies on it - or you can take three Tamron lenses for the same price and weight of one Canon and have one overrun by your truck, the next one eaten by a lion and still go on shooting :-p
LOL i think tex was making a joke about his friend not understanding its a prime. lack of zoom etc ;)

It's a very nice lens, if a little long in the tooth.  I had one for a while, sold it after getting the 100-400L (wanted longer than 300mm, and the 300mm + 1.4xII wasn't quite as good as the 100-400 from an IQ standpoint).

Looks like you had to PP this a bit to get some details out of it. I thought about getting one since the 70-300L I had and sold was sharper than the 100-400 I had (and sold)... and thought of using the 300F4 with the 1.4x iii but base don your observation... I might skip it.

By the way did you switch out your 1.4 mk.2 with a mk.3? Did you notice much difference?

It was straight from camera JPG (literally - I was still shooting just JPG in those days, not RAW).  I did shoot it with +1 EC, and the image is cropped a bit.

I did go from the 1.4xII to the 1.4xIII, yes.  But I never compared them side-by-side on the same lens.  Since I was getting the 600 II, I wanted the MkIII for the improved AF with the new supertele lenses, and I used the 1.4xII so rarely that I just sold it after I ordered the 600 II and 1.4xIII.

Probably in cam sharpening? The halo around the duck's head is noticable. Not a bad shot overall though.

The 300mm f4L IS is still one of my favorite walk around telephoto lenses. I use it less since getting the 70-200 f2.8L IS II, but it still has a place in my bag.

This lens is one of the real sleepers in the Canon L range. I sold mine when I got my 300 f/2.8 but I'm seriously tempted to get another one primarily for it's incredible light weight, sharpness wide open, surprisingly close minimum focus distance, 77mm filters and the small space it takes up in the bag.

I'm sure it's rather small and lightweight - no problems with handhold shooting for 3 hours or walking with it in a park. IS could be better and contrast - then it would be just perfect. Shooting against light makes some problems but in overall - the IQ/price factor is really good.

Is it just me or do the images from this lens seem to have more 'pop' than those of the 100-400? With the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II, 1.4TC II and 100-400L in my collection I wonder if there is any benefit in getting this 300 mm as well???

And as a great macro lens. I was out attempting to photograph birds, when I saw this Wax Lip orchid. Without bothering to change to my macro, I used the 300mm + 1.4x TC (with a touch of fill flash). A great lens :)

I had a nightmare with this lens.  In theory the 300mm f/4.0L and 1.4x converter combination should have been better than a 400mm f/5.6L.

300/4.0 + 420/5.6 + IS vs 400/5.6 No IS

In practice it didn't work like that at all.  I managed to get a few decent shots out of the 300 f/4.0L, but the vast majority were completely unusable.  I took it to Canon's service facility in Singapore for checking and calibration, but it was still no better.

The first generation IS is clunky and not very effective.  My other IS lenses feel as if a giant pair of hands has grabbed the lens and is holding it still.  The 300 f/4L IS helps a little, but not very much.

I sold it and bought the 400 f/5.6L.  This lens has been stellar with far superior image quality and consistency.  I don't miss IS all that much, but an update with the latest IS would be very welcome.

I can't really understand all the written praise in this thread.  Most of the sample images have been downsized so much that there is no detail visible, or horribly over-sharpened in PP.  The squirrel shot wasn't bad.

Perhaps I had a particularly bad copy, but after my experience I could never recommend this lens.  YMMV.  This is just about my own personal experience.

I noticed the "IS" in the thread title after clicking in. There seem to be examples from the "plain" 300L, too. I have the non-IS version and have never handled the heavier IS-equipped unit. I like my non-IS model a lot. Paid $700 used and it is very sharp wide open. Good to have something light like this. I don't have access to a sample from this computer.

I once tried rodeo with the 2x-v2 on my 5Dmk3. Of course the body said, "no." But the plain 300's AF is good enough for that action. The handling of this lens is great.

Canon tells me that last November (2013) the lens went "out of service" or reached "end of life" status, meaning no fixes or any service work. Too bad. I don't know if the IS version has been so designated. I don't have much need for this for client work right now but will keep it.

I loved several of the soccer pictures in this thread.

Is it just me or do the images from this lens seem to have more 'pop' than those of the 100-400? With the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II, 1.4TC II and 100-400L in my collection I wonder if there is any benefit in getting this 300 mm as well???
+1 ... I was just thinking the same thing.

Lenses have character.  The 70-200 + 1.4 is just not the same.  The 300mm f4 just has a certain quality beyond sharpness.  Probably because it's a prime.

Unfortunate experience, but glad the 400 is working for you.  My 300mm f4 IS has been great.  I also like it with the 1.4X converter.  My first was a canon VI but I traded up to a VIII and saw an improvement.

This is my very first L lens and it's absolutely wonderful.  I did find it to front focus just enough that I have to be very careful.. such as moving subjects away from the camera.  That'll have to wait until I get a camera with AFMA.

By the way, anyone know how much it would cost to replace the front element?  Bought mine used for a decent price.  It has hair width scratches.  Can't tell in images so no problem.

Would the 300 f/4L IS + TC 1.4 be good for photographing drag racing or perhaps would the 400 f/5.6L be better?

In my Opinion the 400 5.6l is better.
The tele converter slows down my little 300 4l IS quite a bit.
And with drag racing you can use every speed you can get.

The missing IS on the 400mm is not an issue because you are shooting 500/sec anyway.

It's not worth the lens anymore. If you want a clean front element, buy another one.  ;)
No, serious. I also have scratches and i also do not have problems, because the front lens is not the "picture making" element.
Myself I learned to live with it, ignore it and still love my lens.

Taken just this past weekend.

Question for everyone though (I don't know anyone personally that owns this lens).  I bought mine used and it makes a LOT of IS noise and also seems to "clunk" a lot.  From what I have gathered that is fairly normal for this lens due to its overall age.  It just seems like mine makes a lot though.  Does anyone have any examples of how loud it is?

I just had a new 100-400 5.6Lii in my hands - no IS sound what so ever.
I own a 300mm 4L IS and i had a conversation with a canon store owner its quite normal.
Reason is: Lens is very old. The IS parts did wear a lot and also the IS technology was a new thing those days. It's much more improved now.

The IS on the 300 f/4is was noisy and clunky right from new. It's a little alarming to the uninitiated, but is perfectly normal for this lens. I had one for years till I replaced it with a 300 f/2.8is. Honestly, I wish I'd kept it. There's room for both lenses in my opinion. The f/4 is so light in the bag, is sharp wide open and focuses extremely close. For the money, it has always represented remarkable value. One of Canon's true sleepers...
