I haven't seen many macro shots with this lens posted. I think it is pretty good on a 5DII when you have some room to crop . . .
Tv=1/3000
ISO=640
Av=f4.5
Crop=~50%

I find the 24-105mm L to be a versatile lens on a 5D MK II.  It is definitely not a macro lens, but is reasonably sharp when close up.

Here are some images of the 1909 Loof Carousel in Spokane's Riverfront Park that I took in 2008 with my 400D and 24-105mm L.  The Carousel is in a specially constructed building, so light is low and all are at f/4 and ISO 800 which is pretty high for the 400D.

Perhaps this coming Labor Day I'll use my 5D MK II and 35mmL to upgrade the images.  We have been going every Labor Day weekend to the festivities for a few years now, the weather is great, and there are lots of activities.

I agree - super versatile lens, I love the range, sharpness, contrast and IS is useful too. Most of the photos from my Flickr account are taken with 5D and either 24-105/4 or 50/1.4 - this combo is all I need if I want to travel light... Well, relatively light ;)

Great shots guys. I really love the idea of this lens, and it was the first L lens i've bought.

However it's really soft to focus on both my 5dmk2 and 7d. If i set the same shot up with my 24-105L, 24-70L, 28-300L, 50L, it is noticeably softer. I've tried getting it calibrated and micro adjusted but it's not fixed it.

Such a shame. great range, IS, great build quality and judging by all of your pics, exceptional when in the right hands.

I noticed the same softness with the 24-105 that I just bought and ultimately I decided to return it and only use prime lens for now until a new zoom update comes out maybe like the 24-70 2.8 II (hopefully with IS)!

I shoot Weddings with my 24-105 on my 5D mark 2 and find the lens focusing very inconsistent. Images taken in a sequene with the same subject, composition and focusing point, some are sharp and some arn't. Generally by saying sharp I mean usable, I wouldn't say this is a sharp lens. For a while I just thought I hadn't got a great copy, bu :(t when a fiend of mine also got a 5D and 24-105 he has had the exact same problems, both of our lens's seam to experiance more softness at the long end. Was thinking of trading up for a 24-70 with the hope it would be better? Is there anymore of you guys with a similar experiance with this lens? as it has been for me unfortunately a bit disapointing.

I use a 24-105 on a 5d1 body, no issues here.  24-105's are usually very sharp lenses: Took this one 2 days ago,

Taken at F4 fully open, so it could be sharper if stopped lower. No sharpening (PP) was done to this pic, but had to crop it up aggressively or it would not load to the site.  :-[

I HAVE THIS LENS AND IS THE WORST CANON LENS I HAVE EVER HAD, IN TERMS OF QUALITY... IN THE LAST 30 YEARS.
NO OTHER HAD BE BROKEN IN MY HANDS ONLY BECAUSE OF "ZOOM IN/OUT" MOVEMENTS. :o

IN 2 YEARS OF PROFESIONAL WORK IT WILL BE BROKEN, DUE TO IT'S INTERNAL  PLASTIC, DELICATE MECANICAL  AND ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS, IMAGE STABILIZER AND DIAFRAGM WILL START CRAZY FUCTIONING AND CANON DO NOT ADMIT THEY HAVE CREATED A FAILURE DESIGN WITHIN THIS LENS... THEN YOU MIGHT HAVE TO PAY THE BILL OVER 350$.

HEY GUYS, DO NOT BUY THIS LENS!!!!!!  NO PROFANITY

Your argument would be a lot more persuasive without profanity/capital letters and properly thought out sentences.

There is no faulty design here; posting a redacted receipt of the repair note may convince some that you at least got a bad copy, but unless you're playing basketball with the lens itself (as the ball), your statements appear to be completely made up.

I agree - if you only have å, ä and ö it truly is weird... But if you, like me, live in Sweden it's not weird at all! Remember that "foreign" is from your horizon...

I have a (or is it an?) 17-85 today and am (or is it are?) about to buy a 24-105 any day now. Will it I get a dramatic improvement of pic quality, or is it more about the feeling of having an L-lens?

And is it worth waiting for an upgraded version (now, that is a question for a rumour forum, right?)?

Best foreign and/or domestic regards,
Mange

This is getting a bit out of hand haha

My only issues are with a bit of soft focussing on my lens and one of my staff's.

The build quality, is etc is great, and clearly by the pictures here, there are some great copies out there.

I just know from my circle of photographers in Melbourne, we have had a lot of issues with this lens.

I have a dozen l glass lenses and 3 bodies, it's the only one I have an issue with.

But again I'm sure I just got a bad copy. I might try and get Camera Clinic to micro adjust it better.

Instead I find myself having the 24-70 or 70-200 on and it frustrates me because the 24-105 is a perfect range!

@niccyboy

You should consider having Canon calibrate your lens for you.  I had a very soft copy of the 24-70L until Canon serviced it.  They performed lens alignment and focal plane adjustments.  For a reasonable price and some down time, I received my 24-70 back from Canon Canada and was amazed at how sharp my lens is now.

I also own the 24-105L... an amazingly sharp copy, no extra servicing was required.  It's possible for you to have the same level of performance from your copy.  Just give Canon Service a try.

+1:

Maybe English is not his first language... that would explain a lot in his rant. But yes, no need to use caps.

That was my supposition, which is why I wasn't being a jerk about it, but 'nettiquette' (which isn't called that anymore) should be universal if you're on a forum these days.

You can't describe the lens as 'ruggedized' but it's pretty darned bulletproof for the price range.

I've used the 5d mk2 & 24-105 combo extensively and professionally ever since the 5D mk2 came out. I've never had any issues at all. This past Jan. I spent 4 1/2 weeks in India shooting 9700 images with probably 9000 of them with the 24-105. I've printed a number of the images. no sharpness issues.

Post by: zhap03 on October 04, 2011, 11:53:40 AM
Nicci... my down time was about 4 weeks for the 24-70 because I dealt with my local camera store.  It was my first repair job and I didn't know any better.

On my second repair job, I sent my 1Ds3 to Canon Canada directly for a shutter replacement... that only took two weeks before I received my camera back.

Skip the middleman, if you can, and send your lens directly to Canon.  You'll minimize down time.  FYI, I'm not a CPS member.  It's my understanding that CPS members can receive their equipment back in less than a week.

It's important to know that if your lens elements aren't tuned properly, no amount of in-camera micro-adjust will get you sharp images.

Have your lens serviced by Canon!  You'll be tickled when you get your lens back and you realize that all of your stress is gone.  Now you're the proud owner of a "Sharp Copy" and you don't have to be envious of others who were lucky and purchased a sharp lens out of the box.

hi there!

i just thought i would add my 2 cents to this lens. i have it, and it is one of the sharpest and best lenses I own. (just to compare, i also own several prime lenses like the 35mm 1.4 L). the performance of the IS is mindblowing, the color saturation is wonderful.

if you were asking me, I'd say BUY!

My first railroad shot with the new toy....a 7D and the 24-105 L lens! Quite a change from the FD equipment if I may say so  :). I really like how the lens can refocus between each frame at 8 fps on the fast moving train, and the color and sharpness are really nice as well.

Ted

Hmmm....the photo certainly lost a lot of sharpness when posted....what happened??? I sized it at 900 x 600 - is that too big and the forum compressed it??

I could not find anything in the help files about posting photos, and the others here are nice and sharp...

Edit** Click on the photo to see a larger copy - that one is nice and sharp as it should be with a lens like this!

Thanks Fesapo. I read alot about people criticising the distortion on the 24-105 and 17-40, but I think there are times where it really adds to creativity. Of course, the extension tubes exaggerate the distortion.
Eddie, I can't say the precise reason, but was the uploaded file in Adobe RGB or sRGB? I've seen similar problems when websites have applied compression algorithms when converting from Adobe to sRGB, although I don't think that can be the reason here. However, browsers aren't very good at displaying Adobe RGB. Try using the Save for Web function if you use Photoshop.

Hi Kernuak,

The file is sRGB and I did use the save for web function in PS5. However, I did just notice that if you click on my photo, it opens a new larger window and there the image is displayed as it should be! That is a feature of this forum software I did not know about.

I wasn't sure on how big to make the photo - some people are likely still using smaller monitors and would have to scroll to see the entire photo, which can be irritating for some.

I just got the 7D and that was my first series of railroad photos I took with it. The camera and lens are really nice and the more I use it the more I wonder if I'll even finish the roll of film that is in my A-1 :).

Thanks again!

Ted

The last few weeks, it's been carnival season. For a few weeks in November, Somerset plays host to around 110-120 entries, many of which are up to 100 foot long illuminated carts. Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival, where it all started over 400 years ago, is purported to be the largest illuminated carnival in the world and the third largest carnival behind Rio and Notting Hill. It's a totally different feel though, as it happens at night, sometimes in the freezing cold or heacy rain. Here are a few of the entries this year.

I don't often shoot at 70mm and when I do, it tends to be narrower apertures. However, for most subjects, the corners would be out of focus at f/4@70mm, so softness even if you find a suitable subject to test, would be irrelevant in the real world, as you'd want them soft anyway, with a few exceptions. I do find the corners soft at 24mm@f/11-f/16 though, which is one reason I was looking at the 24mm MkII, Zeiss 21mm and the TSE 24MM MkII for landscapes. The 24mm MkII won the contest, because I wanted f/1.4 for the northern lights. I'll see what I can find. I found one shot at 80mm, but the corners were out of focus.

This is the closest I could find, 82mm@f/4. Generally, I find that the more you zoom in, the sharper it gets and at 24mm until around 30mm, the 17-40 is sharper.

In the studio setting, where you have control over the background and sufficient lighting to stop down, the 24-105mm f/4L IS makes a flexible and excellent portrait lens...

Nice!  I never thought of this lens as a portrait lens, but I guess I was wrong!

I truly love this lens. It's sharp, focuses fast, nice bokeh, it's not too heavy and I would highly recommend it for fashion photography.

Hi, I am just a Silver member and I feel my copy is bit soft (even after AFMA using Focal). Do you know how much canon usually charge for such adjustments ?

I understand that shipping charges would be on me but other than that how much does Canon charge and what is the usual turnaround time ?

thank you

My copy is great.  The 24-105L is not a "sexy" lens, but yet I find that some of my best work comes from it, mostly because it is competent and because of it's great focal length it tends to "around" when I am shooting.  Here's a few faves from it:

Thanks for your kind comments Dustin. We try and take our shots either just as the sun is rising or setting. In this case the sun was just about to go down behind a hill on the other side of the valley, so as usual ( cos I'm always late !) there was no time to set up a tripod, so this was taken hand held with IS at about 40th from memory. The IS makes it a very versatile lens but we do find that it's much sharper without IS on if shutter speed is fast enough to avoid shake.

Long time reader, first time poster :)

I took this picture yesterday... I also played with LR for the first time and finally start shooting RAW. I am just not sure if I like the result. 50% of the time I look at it, I like it (because it makes the chopper look tough :)), the other 50% I am like "waaaaaaay overdone". Guess I have to find the balance somewhere :)

Lots to learn :)

Nice picture for me though I'd prefer a little bit less saturation and a little bit more warmth but it's just me.  :)

Personally, I don't think warmth fits images with snow and would err towards cool colurs, but I would tend to agree with the saturation. I would also be inclined to increase the exposure (which would have the side effect of less saturation), so that the snow looks whiter than it does at the moment. Some areas need to be slightly blue because they are in shadow and it helps the viewer to "feel" the cold, but it is underexposed at the moment.
Nice picture for me though I'd prefer a little bit less saturation and a little bit more warmth but it's just me.  :)

I like it. I tend to oversaturate since I like bold colors, but when overdone it often doesn't look natural. I like the contrasting red and blue tones in your photo. Slower shutter speed (if possible) can blur the propeller blades for a different look.

As an amateur I recently started shooting RAW. Much more useful for PP. I have LR3 but need to learn how to use it. Show us some more of your work in the future.

This is a great website. Great advice and friendly people :)

Thanks for the comments! I definitely agree on the over-saturation and the under-exposure actually too when I look at it again... Nice learning curve :)

Here is another one, with the same lens... Open for any critisicm/suggestions! Image is almost straight out of the camera; just some cropping and a little added contrast... Less than 1 minute in total. The only total noob-mistake is that I totally forgot to disable the IS on the tripod :o

I know it's not a sexy and cool lens but I keep it on my 5D3 most of the time unless I need more reach or using a faster prime. This is from last Sunday looking out over the Mekong river in Phnom Penh. To the right is a landfill they are working on to enlarge the Diamond Island which is one of the city's expansion areas. The picture is processed in LR4, the tone is correct but a bit enhanced through split toning. It was a beautiful morning.
thanks

Hi guys I'm new to the forum and I just saw the tread about my favorite lens. I'm not sure if it is appropriate but I rather give you the link to my website were most of the images are taken with the Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM. I do have several other lenses in my back but this is the lens that I'm feeling comfortable to use most of the time. Sharp results ( even in low light situations), very flexible focal range ... it is an amazing glass to have among your arsenal of optics.

Again, I want to highly recommend this lens to any one out there who is wondering what Canon glass to buy for hes/her camera.

@Nikolay, thanks for the comments. There was an English artist in the 1890's, quite famous now for painting hunting scenes, called George Wright. A lot of his work is now in the US. You've made me think I could get a picture with a similar stamp to his paintings. With the hounds in the frame and no modern hats, cars or tractor wheelings I could get a timeless photograph that could have been taken in the 1890's, had it been possible.  :D

Great lens!
It´s better than I thought and gives great results, but I like primes more. Not for better quality or sharpness and not that I think every photo is better with shallow DoF but because... I like to use primes.

You guys already know all there is to know about the lens from photozone and the-ditigal-picture. No need to point out the obvious.

I wonder if this is because there is more sample variation with this lens than others. Canon have turned out thousands of these at a 'reasonable' price and I suspect they're not all assembled to the desired tolerances.

However being a Canon L at least it can be 'post manufacture' fine tuned by specialists, unlike zoom lenses that have elements glued in.

At Building Panoramics we have two: one is perfect, the other is as sharp as a 50mm f1.4 (at say 5.6) on the far left, but quite blurred on the far right.

I got this lens in a kit with my 5DM3 and I'm upset that I didn't get it sooner.  It works great on the 5DM3 and I use it as a walkabout lens.  The 24mm on a FF is awesome, and I agree with all the sharpness/contrast, etc. comments.

I've used it for portraiture before with good results, but I prefer my 50 1.4 or 70-200 2.8 M2 for those.

Overall, the 24-105 is one of the best lenses for your dollar, imho.

I've ended up liking mine more than I'd anticipated. I thought the distortion on the wide end or the relatively narrow aperture would bug me-- and they have, at times. But for the most part, it's been my go-to lens when I shoot events. The 5D Mark III's high ISOs give me just enough shutter speed flexibility to freeze motion with f/4 at dimly lit press events and trade shows, and because the 24-105 range is so versatile, I use the lens at least half the time. I have to pull out primes if I want particularly striking bokeh but I've certainly found its sharpness, which is sometimes maligned, to be more than acceptable. Not as crisp as my 40mm f/2.8 or 70-200mm f/4, but otherwise as sharp as my other primes (though, to be fair, this is often comparing 24-105 at f/4 to 85 at f/2 and 50 at 4 f/1.6 or f/1.8-- not quite apples to apples).

This shot is my most recent 24-105 picture, nothing special, but I really like how the lens transmits colors, and how the Mark III's files respond to reasonable processing.

Interesting remark - I made the exact the same observation to myself when I jumped from APS-C to FF a couple of weeks ago. I thought the EF-S 17-55 ƒ/2.8 IS USM was the best lens I ever owned until I started using the EF 24-105L on a 6D. The differences in therms of sharpness and chromatic aberration are huge, especially in the corners. However, I miss the flexibility of the EF-S in hand-held low light conditions, so I plan to use a EF 35 ƒ/2.0 IS USM for this application.

Max (you posted some great shots by the way!)

Thanks very much! Funny that you linked this photo as an example being that I just saw it on your photostream earlier today. Love your Flickr, sir 8)

Well that was convenient :)  Thanks!

Here's one from the 24-105 I recently picked up.  For some reason I held off on getting it as a kit w/my 6D and eventually "settled" on it.  In other words, I wasn't super excited about it.  So far I've been very happy with the results.

However, I miss the flexibility of the EF-S in hand-held low light conditions, so I plan to use a EF 35 ƒ/2.0 IS USM for this application.

Why would you? The 24-105 lets about 1/3 more light in (when on FF).

Here's our latest picture, shot with the 5D mkii and 24-105 f4.

Taken from a small mountain in the English Lake District National Park called Haystacks, looking north west, late evening.

Did someone on CR once call this lens 'garbage" ?  ;D
I certainly never did. I love it and use it most of the time. I love the photograph, I hope to go there some day.

Many thanks Guys.

@rpt, I'm pleased you like the balance of colours colors because when we first produced this picture it disappointed, until we de saturated and gave a much more realistic saturation to the colour, and 'ping' - it worked. I think it looks like Ektachrome shot on 5x4 !

The particular 24-105 that we used for this shot is a very good copy. It holds more resolution in the centre of the frame at f8 than our 50mm f1.4 does at the same aperture

I bought this lens second hand.  Last w/e did a shoot with models in Pin Up style.  If the micro-imperfections in their skin are any indication, the lens is plenty sharp on a 5dmkII.  Clinically sharp.  Kinda gross actually.  Pretty happy for what is basically a "kit" lens.  I still like my 85mm/1.8 for speed/weight/size, but for a zoom it's pretty decent (or I got a good copy).

Thanks. No, I just used f/13, ISO 100. That lowered to speed to 3.2 sec., and I waited for the cars to start moving. I was also exposing a bit to the right, since my 5D2 is overprotective of the highlights on night shots.

I like the second one Sporgon!

Here's another couple of shots with the 24-105. As with others find who use this lens, it's not one you would love, but inevitably so many of my pictures are taken with it.

Taken at 105mm, f4 in the last few minutes of sunlight. Once again IS comes to the rescue.

I finally replaced my ancient Tamron 28-75 2.8, when the price of the 24-105 got down to $725 last week.  It came in a white box with lens hood, pouch and US warranty registration papers.  I assume it was part of a kit.

First I did a focus test.  The point of focus at F/4 was within the depth of field at both ends of the zoom range, but being a bit obsessive about focus accuracy I put in +1 AFMA at both ends to make it closer to perfect.  Then I took the new lens and my 5D3 to the Portland Rose Garden for some practice.

I have to say I am very impressed with the autofocus, center sharpness and color rendering.  Edge sharpness is not very important in my work, so I can't comment on that.  The folks at LensRentals.com mention this lens as one of their least troublesome lenses, so hopefully it will continue to work well for a long time.

Here is a shot at F/4, 1/400, ISO 200.  It's been a while since I had an image that wasn't too naughty to post here!

I love my 24-105 too.
It's on the camera (5D3) 90% of the time and probably the most versatile lens I own.
I've done entire weddings using just this lens both for stills and movies and I'm still inlove with the colour and contrast it gives.

Here's some shots of the Sydney Harbour Bridge during Sydney's Vivid Festival to show how good it is even at night.

This lens isn't what you want to shoot the Milky Way with, but if it's all you have with you, at least you can come home with something. I have to say, I'll never "love" this lens, but I sure do end up using it a lot. "Going on a trip, taking the 5D3 and...the 24-105...". (but I was really wishing I had my Rokinon 35 with me for this shot, wasn't expecting the opportunity to shoot stars so didn't pack it)

I have been considering one of these to replace my Tamron 28-75 as well. Should I pickup a new copy or go for one of the good looking used ones on ebay? I would use it on a 5 and 7D.
I have the Canon 24-135 is usm that actually takes beautiful shots on my 5D but not as much the 7D...makes no sense to me.
Or should I just stick the with 24-135 since I already have it.

Thanks.

Personally I'd go for the 24-105mm L over the Tamron in a minute.  I've shot that lens and it never compared to my 24-105mm.  Have you tried AMFA on your 7D with your 24-135MM?  May make a difference.

I'd go for the 24-105mm over the 24-135mm too.  I'd sell them both and pick up a new or almost new 24-105mm.  Personally I like new.  Sometimes there are some excellent almost new copies out there.  Always ask the seller for the date code though and only go for the newest.  When buying used, I always buy as new as I can get...

Good luck! :)
Oh btw, I've used the 24-105mm L on both my 5d Mk III and my 7d.  It performed flawlessly on both...

Thanks for the info Ken. I sometimes have a problem parting with items....like a mini pack rat lol.
Its odd my luck with lenses, my tamron is tack sharp and takes great pix on my 7d but on my 5d its a little off. On the 5d the pix froom the canon 28-135 are great but on my 7d a little off. Maybe it needs calibrated to my 7d but I havent gotten around to doing it. My tripod is broken atm and I dont think you can do that w/o one.
I do have the tamron 17-50 which is very nice on my 7d but wont work on the 5d as its for cropped cameras.

Great shots!

I agree too- I love this lens.  I recently got the 24-70 2.8II and love that one too!  Both have changed the way I think about shorter lenses.

Keep up the great shooting.

Really enjoyable.  Thanks for sharing! I love this lens as well.

This is the best general purpose zoom I have had (of course I have never had a 24/28-70 2.8).  Still, mine seems very sharp all around on full frame.  It appears there are a lot of variance with the production, as some report excellent results and others report getting bad copies.  (Either that or the bad reports are just people being overly critical and going into it with a negative mindset because it is not the 2.8).

Although I use it mostly at 24mm, here is a recent shot from Carlsbad Caverns at 99mm.  Since you obviously cannot leave the narrow walkway in the caverns, this shows when the extended reach (beyond 70mm) comes in handy.  This is the unedited JPEG, other than downsizing.

No time for a tripod so I think the IS made this one possible. It's maybe not a pixel peeper's lens but it just does the job. (http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7447/10296600595_49768e56d5_b.jpg)

Both really like this image (the way the light has fallen on the ground, and also the rays bursting out of the cloud mirroring the shadow lines on the ground is just great), and also slightly dislike it. But I only dislike the composition rather than the content I think. The tree and shadow in the middle are just too central for my liking. But maybe that's just personal preference rather than anything else.

What settings were used? I'm sure if I'd have been there I would have botched the exposure one way or the other.

Good comment! The problem was where I could place myself to get the tree in the way of the sun without trespassing any further into the farmer's field and from where I was the surrounding areas to the sides were less interesting so not worth including. Wish I had another version less centred as well to see which would have been more effective. Might try a slightly different crop...

Settings ISO 200, f11, 100 second. Shot in manual after taking a few shots in aperture priority to get a sense of what worked. Also took lots of shots to try and get the exposure and ended up realising it was pretty impossible even with the 3 stop ND grad I was using. I ended up having to shoot using the histogram - keeping in enough tones in the shadows and highlights to know I could use the RAW file in Lightroom after.

Being a sucker for a 16:9 ratio I'd use that in Lightroom and crop part of the right and the top of the image off. Although looking at the image, it might leave the horizon in an awkward place. I'd have stood in the same place to take the photo, but probably rotated to the left a few degrees.

A shot I took last year in California. It was the middle of the night, and the house next to the one I was staying caught fire. We went outside, and I started taking pictures with my 24-105. I could have used a faster lens but I needed the versatility of the zoom. I just cranked the ISO to 6400 on my 5D2. I have shots with the whole house on fire but the one I most like is his one.

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7370/10547887846_b4c46de912_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/plamen-stefanov/10547887846/)
fire fighters (http://www.flickr.com/photos/plamen-stefanov/10547887846/#)

BTW, nobody was hurt, this was an old house in an expensive neighborhood. The owner did not have insurance but he sold the lot and probably got enough money to move to a more modest neighborhood.

Just got one after initially rejecting it (as a kit) in favor of the 17-40 F4L.  While I find the 17-40 very good for landscape photography, I was surprised at the very good IQ from this versatile lens.  Now, I'm torn apart if I'll bring both lens or just stick to the 24-105 for our family's Krabi trip this May.  My wife warned me of bringing more than 2 lens.  I'm thinking of just bringing a 50mm and the 24-105mm.  If it were you, what would you bring?

Good to see that the 24-105L thread is still alive. The 24-70 f4 IS is definitely better than the 24-105L in the 24-70 range, but the 24-105 is much better at 71-105.

My 24-105 is very much alive, it's my core travel-lens that I couldn't do without (my travel kit typically consists of 17-40 f/4L, 24-105 f/4L, 70-300mm f/4-5.6L and a 35mm f/2 or 50 mm f/1.8 MkI).

For any other application where maximum flexibility is needed, the 24-105 is my go-to lens. Helped by good high iso there's nothing to replace it imho. I consider it my mega-zoom lens (within reason).

Note that I sold my 24-70 f/2.8 in favor of a Sigma 35mm. For such a limited zoom range I rather have the creative flexibility of a prime ;)

late to the party... but if it were me, given the choices you describe, I would bring both f/4 zooms.    The 24-105 will stay on most of the time, but the 17-40 will give you FL overlap and you will have better performance than the widest portions of the 24-105.  If you have the time to change lenses, for example, to avoid flare and minimize distortion at 24mm, you will appreciate having the 17-40.  You will also  have the UWA range which might come in handy.  Wives who warn of more than two lenses are more likely to influence the time you have to get certain photos, which means you may have to take the shot, sometimes, with the lens you have on the camera.

The Keep of Scarborough Castle, northern England, shot from the barbican; that is a fortified, narrow entrance where should invaders manage to get through the gate way they would be herded into a highly vulnerable position before reaching the castle.  A three frame pano stitch, so the sensor size for this picture is actually slightly larger than that of an S2 or Pentax 645.

5DII + 24-105L @ 35mm, f11, 1/40 and ISO 100.

I really like this shot. Nicely done Sporgon.

nice work sporgon!    Given the choice, I would have used my 16-35mm f/4, for the sunset but in this case I was driving and had just a few seconds window of opportunity to stop, grab the camera and run. This shot was taken at about 35mm.  The 24-105 was attached to the 5D3 and I didn't have time to change lenses,  much less set up the tripod  So I settled for a 5-frame HDR.  One of the problems inherent to the 24-105 is flare, and for that reason this is the only sunset I have attempted with it.  Thank goodness for IS and great ghosting and alignment software!  This one used only Lightroom and the Nik plugin.

That's quite a dramatic image ! Would go down well on a site like 500px. I like what you have done with it. I have always found my copies of the 24-105L to be pretty good at 35mm, but that 16-35 f4 L seems quite remarkable. Trouble is when I shoot wide I am normally stitching longer lenses, so I can't quite justify it............

One of the reasons I like the 24-105L - it goes to 105/

Cow and calf in Nettle Dale near Millington, Yorkshire Wolds, England.

Beautiful picture Sporgon, the only problem I have with the 24-105 is that @ f8 the 50mm 1.8 II is sharper, I like it for group shots since the only wide lens I currently have - other than this one - is the 14mm on FF, but since discovering the poor performance at f8 I plan on using the 50mm for panos.

You can't compare a zoom to a prime lens such as a 50mm.  Anyway, the main strength of 24-105 isn't in sharpness but in versatility.  It's not super sharp but it's enough to produce some of my best photos due to versatility.  Most of the time, I go out with it if I'm with my family so that I don't have to change lenses every time.

you are right, however I am comparing it @ f8, where L lenses at least should be sharp enough, and beautiful photos btw :)
