I love this lens... AF not as fast as a 70-200 2.8 but not slower than the 85 1.2...

To be honest... this lens is the one I am using almost all the time in my holidays...

A few shots...

Used this lens on my recent visit to a car show.  I also like this lens for candid portrait.  The large DOF even at small aperture can be very useful on a FF - on the playroom picture with any other of my lens the ball in front of the face would have been blurred because it was shot at f3.2!

Nice photos.

Can I ask something about the northen lights photo?

You  mentioned in flickr that it isn't very sharp. Was this due to focusing?
All Canon lenses focus beyond infinite and when I take a night sky picture I try to
focus on a bright star using the center point. Sometimes it works some not but
lately I use my manual focus 21mm Zeiss. Infinite is infinite.
However if focusing is correct and you see star trails this is normal if you shoot
with a shutter open more seconds than stated in the following formula:

(500 to 600) / focal length. For a 24mm this is 20 to 30 sec tops. Beyond that the
startrails are obvious.

Also if the trees look blurry it could probably be attributed to wind.

Anyway I meant to say that there is a probability that a little blurrying couldn't have been avoided. You still must feel lucky. I wish I were there but it is almost impossible.

Congratulations anyway.

Thanks Tron. The sharpness was basically human error. I may be being a bit hypercritical of my attempts, but I was trying to run before I could walk. I was trying to focus at the hyperfocal distance (10m @ 24mm and f/1.4) to get some of the foreground in focus as well, when I should have gone for the shot first, then started experimenting. One of the criticisms of modern lenses (and it is one area where Zeiss lenses have the edge), has been the depth of field scales. Basically, the scale on the 24mm f/1.4 MkII (and in fact most Canon WA lenses) goes from 3m to infinity, making it a guestimation that it is focused at the hyperfocal distance, unless you prefocus on something at 10m. I could have afforded to stop down a bit too (which I did later on, when the lights had subsided a bit).
The ISO 800 shots were 15 secs, so it is likely that there would have been some star trails, while the ISO 1600 shots were at 8 secs (mostly f/1.4, but some later ones at f/1.6). The lights weren't exactly bright, but at least I saw them and got some usable shots. Incidentally, the two shots that I thought were teh best in terms of sharpness (both when the lights were subsiding), can't have been too bad, as they were accepted by Alamy, in a batch only containing the two shots and nothing else. Alamy typically scan two images from each upload to make sure the image quality is high enough.

Daniel, I just ordered a 24 II tonight, I hope it blows the doors out for me, been dreamin about it for a few years. This is an expensive month!
I assume that was taken on your new 5dm3? The image is very clean.
What can you tell me about the 24 II from your personal connection with it?

I absolutely adore this lens. I'd been dreaming of a 24mm f/1.4 on a FF camera ever since I first heard that Canon had one. Wasn't able to afford it until version II came out, and in a way, I'm glad I had to wait. It's my favorite lens that I've ever shot, and that list includes the 85L and my 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM II, which I also like an awful lot.

But the 24 is magic.

I also dreamt about it for around two years (well since its release whenever that was now, time flies by). When I went to Norway to photograph the northern lights, I didn't have anything wider than f/4 at the wide end, so it was the driver to finally getting it. Now, I will never take another shot at around 24mm without it. My 24-105 has suddenly become a part-timer. I knew the image quality would be quite a bit better, but I wasn't prepared for just how good the 24 f/1.4 MkII is. It is much sharper, has much less CA and distortion and a nicer look, due to it being more contrasty. I no longer have to worry about the corners being soft.

Thanks guys, you are making turning my possible buyers remorse into a big smile!  :D
I haven't got ship confirmation and i ordered next day Fedex so if i don't get a confirmation soon I'll have to call Canon and say remove my next day charges, it said in stock on your site but never shipped next day as expected. I ordered from Adorama where it said in stock and i got it a week or two later and called them up and they removed the charge but seriously charging me for next day service when i didn't get it the next day is bordering on theft.

Haha, i had to modify the post because literally while typing this i got an email ship confirmation from Canon.

Hi, that photo was taken on my new 5D3 with the 24Lii wide open, 1/200, MLU, tripod, iso 100, converted with DPP, and only minor adjustments in DPP; I orderd the lens with the 5D3, so I've had it a week, yes, expensive month.  Its AF is fast, it's sharp wide open, well built, but that stuff is expected; its best feature is wide angle perspective and shallow dof —it's awesome.

With my 50D I had the 10-22 as my WA, it was a great lens, but the 24L stomps it at every turn.  Add that to the 5D3's AF that is light years ahead of what my 50D provided and I'm very thrilled.

Also, the 24 vignettes a lot wide open, but I love that feature.  You can see it in my photo above;  I always leave that in and never correct it in DPP, but DPP does a great job of removing it if you want do that.

Thanks Daniel, I look forward to more from you in the future but honestly having all the best lenses is going to be difficult for you to decide what to pick up and bond with :D
My 24 II is going to be here tomorrow. I am also getting a padded insert for my Pelican Case. While the foam is really nice for locking your equipment into place I keep changing things and lately adding things to put in the case and now with a 3rd body its going to be tight but this will be nice to have a non-foam version so i dont have to keep buying new foam section kits for it when things change for me. I have a backpack that just maxed out on usefulness and besides lugging that on your back isn't the best. I just roll away with the Pelican Case.

Canon had my lens to me by 10am this morning overnighted. I am pretty impressed with the out of focus properties. I am just struggling with consistency. Is this an issue with this lens? Do you have to shoot a few to make sure you get it? I set it to-3 micro adjust on my 5dm3 so far and that helped.I'll test it on the other bodies when i get a chance.
How does it focus with far away subjects? From what i have read you want to be closer to your subjects when you shoot with shallow,  if any of you guys that have a lot of lens time could offer some tips or suggestions i'd really appreciate it!

My lens nails it all the time, even at this wide of lens, f1.4 can is thin.   I never seem to shoot at infinity now that you ask.  But I have mfa disabled on my 5D3 because I shoot wide open and close, so any error correction is lost do to subject or camera movement.  I find the more I play with mfa the worse my keeper rate is —so disable.

because i am at home multi-tasking i can't get out for decent samples but just around the house the images are very 50mm goo looking which makes me very very happy! Shooting detail stuff is going to be impressive to say the least. My real test will be people. I tried micro on my 1dm3 and it didn't seem to help either so i may disable it too. My other lenses dont have any issues since they are F2.8 cept for the 50 1.2 which i will also not be using mfa upon your suggestion.
Thanks man!

Because I use it mainly for landscapes, I manually focus at narrower apertures. One day I'll get to use it wide open, but there is always something else to shoot. So far I've only used it wide open or near wide open for the aurora.

From the results of testing this lens F5.6 is at it's peak, thats not to say its not good with smaller apertures but If i just want everything tack ill prob bump it to that. Else I plan to find my happy place with it. I was trying to decide if i should come up with a standard for all my faster than 2.8 lenses and considered just doing F2. I am not sure if that will matter or not since the properties of each of the fast primes is so ridiculous they can't be compared really. We are talking about shooting live subject with F2 Static objects i could see having more freedom. Well, those are some things i have been thinking about anyway...
I am noticing that this lens needs contrast things to focus on spot focus doesn't seem to work well if you still dont have the contrast. You can solve this problem however by getting closer it seems.

These were the first shots I took with my 24. The camera is the original 5D. Seemed to focus just about perfectly, even on that ancient body. As you can see, I'm close to her. As you can also see, DOF is incredibly shallow.

On some of these, I added vignetting in post. The lens doesn't vignette that much.

One other suggestion i think you should know. Yesterday I read that putting filters on the 24 screws up the focus, I confirm that to be true. I usually don't use filters on any lenses unless i need polarization.
No post processing just med fine jpegs too.
F1.4 on all images

This first shot had sun blaring into the camera yet the 24 kills it better than anything i have seen!

Yeah I edited in camera raw 7.0 and boosted vibrance and saturation then ran it through a filter. I recently picked up Alien Skin and I often tweak one of the presets and then i adjust the opacity of the new layer until it looks good (usually 50%)

One of the things I like about the 24L MkII is the close minimum focusing distance and while food and product photography isn't something I get excited about, it shows off the low levels of distortion from the lens.

I plan on using it for some portraits tomorrow. It's a bit out of my comfort zone, but it should be a good experience.

I don't use F1.4 much it is amazing what F1.4 looks like for a wide lens like this. Was this a crop? It seems you would need to be 4ft away from her but the it is really tightly framed by her ball cap suggesting you were even closer. Looks like you have you done many portraits with the 24 from your postings. Nice work. You have a focus in concert photography?

I just had a 24*36 inch print of this image made. It looks amazing considering it's around f16 with a 10 stop filter.

I only crop vertically since I prefer 16:9 or even 2.39:1. In the above photo she was less than 2 feet away. This lens is pure magic for it's ability to grab a subjects surroundings and add context to portraits.

In the above photo my subject was less than 3 feet away.

I find street portraits and concert photography the most fun, but I've been wanting to get into event, architecture and landscape. I've only been shooting "seriously" for about 8 months.

Thanks, I'm still processing, but I got some with my 50mm f/1.4 I'm really happy with (ok I had some help with the ligthing) and I got some with the 24 too, so I'll post them when I get there. The best ones were in the railway workshop.

You know i was concerned at how close i have to get to my subject prior to owning this lens, that quickly became a non-issue but i am sure like when using my fisheye i often get strange responses to how close i get but i try to brief them on the lens and what it will do and how i will be getting really close so to not wig out and that often causes people to relax escpecially when i take a shot and show them how cool it looks.

My friend asked me for a few shots of her for her yoga website. We had very little space to work with in her Brooklyn apt- basically just moved a couch near the one window in the room. I never even considered using the 24mm for this shoot (see the 85mm f/1.2 lens thread for other shots), but I needed some full body poses too, so it saved the day!

So, wow, this lens is freaking awesome.  I had a wedding in vermont, and of course, i was going to be in vermont and i have been thinking of this lens for a while but just couldn't see adding it to the bag because i had the 16-35 and the 24-70 (v1) - so i rented the 24.  Upon getting home from Vermont I considered the senior shoot I was doing that evening and decided to keep the 24 for an extra day.  And with a wedding this weekend, I decided to call and ask for an extension till monday.

I know many have told me I should just upgrade my 24-70, but, there is something just ohhh so nice about this lens, the colors, the FOV, the fact that it's wide with relatively low distortion.  And yeah, the fact that it can go to 1.4, yeah, that kicks at a wedding reception.  This lens will be mine, it's just a matter of how, can I swing picking it up without selling the 24-70????  I'd like to keep that lens like on the shelf because it was my first piece of L glass (and yeah, as a backup just in case anything goes wrong).  financially, I may need to just sell it though...we shall see, either way, I am sold, the 24mm kicks major ass!!!!!

I haven't tried the Zeiss 21mm or the TSE, but I think from f/2.8 or f/3.5, they are all equally sharp and all have their own unique look. The 24mm f/1.4 MkII tends to get a hit in reviews, because it isn't as sharp until you stop down to at least f/2, but then the others don't go that wide, which reviewers don't seem to take into consideration.

As i am primarily a wedding and portrait shooter...the TSE would be pretty impractical, though it is an amazing lens.  and the Zeiss, though it also kicks butt, it lacks AF, and for weddings, low light work I'd prefer AF...I've read the reviews, and same reviews come in for other L primes --- the 50 L most notibly...It's soft at 1.2 and the other lens can beat it at f5.6...lol...the images i have seen from the 24 are outstanding though, and from the 8 days i have had the rental, I am loving it!!!!!  Got another senior session tonight and I am pretty damn sure I will be using it alot!!!
