Since I started using the 5D MkII, I don't use the 17-40 quite as much as I used to, as I'm restricted with filter use, but it's quite good for exaggerated perspectives. A nicer foreground would have been better, but it got the effect I was looking for. The rocks were almost directly below my feet.

Probably the perfect shot for showing all of the 17-40's weakpoints, flare, distortion and CA. Again, I wanted to exaggerate the distortion the lens produces by pointing down at quite a sharp angle and use the polariser to show the contents of the rockpool. The sun wasn't really where I wanted it, but I just had to go with it.

This lens spent over 3 years on my Canon400D. Constantly. As in, the first day I got it it went on, and never off in that time! Admittedly this was in part down to poverty and not owning anything else, but I still love that lens for all the shots it's given me...

After reading many mediocre reviews I wasn't sure about getting this lens. There aren't many other choices in the same price range so I decided to just get it. I'm somewhat of a pixel peeper and I am happy with this lens. Awesome lens. Especially on full frame.

When I had my 20D converted to IR I sent in this lens to have the body calibrated to use it as a standard lens. It was a perfect choice.

This lens is generally good but the corners are soft when there is anything detailed near them.  Still, It's relatively sharp stopped down and I'll keep it for a long time.

Very Nice... and with FF, you will be able to get the whole peak on the right side, and perhaps land it in the rule of thirds grid too  ;)

I've been on the fence about this lens for a while.... Is it actually good on a full frame camera? Or does it just reveal all of it's weaknesses? It looks beautiful on a crop.

thanks, I didn't frame it  "on the right line" on purpose because it was cutting too much on the left side (like that slope on the forest) and the panorama wasn't enough "spaced".

that place (scotland, top of the old man of storr) is beautiful anyway... have to go back there one day!

I was not faulting your framing in the least.  :) You did the best with waht you had. All I was saying is, you will have even more options with FF to frame it.

It's a bit of both. I don't use mine much now, since getting the 5D MkII and more recently the 24 MkII, but the reason is as much that I find it a bit wide for my style on full frame and issues with using square/rectangular filters as image quality. At f/16 it is visibly softer across the field, but the corners really show up the lens when using full frame. That said, when I do use it, it is usually for an extreme effect and there is little else that can achieve that. I can't remember if it was earlier in this thread or elsewhere, I posted one such extreme effect, emphasising the distortion, which also showed its other weaknesses of corner softness, CA and flare.
Title: Re: Canon EF17-40mm f/4L USM
Post by: K-amps on May 03, 2012, 03:22:24 PM
There is some corner softness wide open, but at f/8 improves a lot and is on par with the 16-35mk.ii at that aperture.

Wide open the 16-35mk.ii has better corner resolution.  For the money it is a great lens at about 50% the price of the 16-35.

Even at F4, it is pretty usable as far as resolution goes... here's a shot I took of it at F4 ... gives you an idea of using it wide open on FF, you can see the corner softness, but the image otherwise tells the story you want to tell.

EOS 5DII, 17-40mm f/4L USM@19mm f/16, 5s and cold enough that I could not feel the difference in texture between the flocking on the inside of the lens hood and the edge of the polarising filter.

It can be soft, but it's mostly at the far corners and nothing like that. To me, it looks a lot more like a T-S lens effect. Either that or some Photoshopping going on.

I'm a bit more sensitive to that effect now since I'm playing around with a CPS evaluation T-S lens. I sooooo want it. Can't afford it unfortunately :(   I need to just win the lotto.

Well...except for the Tilt-Shift lenses which let you do selective focus like that. That's only when you use it to do that, of course, but it's one of the nifty features of those lenses.

That just bit edge blur in PS as so busy all people would been distracting in the image, lens is great as so light and in New York the wide is just amazing what you can get in. I'd love tilt shift lens for things like this to get a nice slice of selective focus.

It is sharp lens in all stuff i've done with it mostly wide stuff.

It was a 5 minute Lightroom processing job, I pretty much nailed it in camera, after fiddling with the CPL to get the dreamy look I was after. If I remember correctly cropping the image took the most amount of time in Lightroom. I tend to process things instinctively.

Since using a CPL, the softness of the lens seems to have reduced somewhat. Either that or I'm getting the hang of using the lens. It's got a sweet spot like most lenses.

Had a go at some long exposure Photography last night at an annual fair (St Giles Fair, it's been around since the 1600's). I don't think I've done too badly, given this is my first time at trying this technique. Learning by the seat of my pants again. I used a range of f numbers and shutter speeds (anywhere from 2.5 seconds to 30 seconds).

Thanks. Pretty pleased with how everything turned out, given that was the first time I'd tried
a long exposure at night.

Is the total size of the 2 JPGs < 4 MegaBytes (so 4,194,304 bytes)? If so, how fast is your upstream? If it's something like 512 Kbit/sec it'll take some time to upload those. You might have to wait a couple of minutes to upload.

That's right, the total size is less than 4 MB. I have a high-speed connection, so I doubt if the upload speed is the problem. Is Mozilla compatible? Do you guys use something else?
Thanks!

Just about everything should be fine, I've always used FireFox, no problems.

17-40 F/4L On the Canon 7D

No tripod, and with the exception of the last two I was doing this bare handed in 28 degree weather so I was freezing up. So they're a lot less artsy than the incredible ones in this thread.

Done this shoots few days ago with the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM this is the lens that usually stays unused in my back do to the fact that for most of the time I use 24-105mm f/4L USM IS. Any way lately I started photographing houses and apartments so I need to use something wider that 24mm.
Here are two photographs from an amazingly beautiful entrance of a building.
Pictures were taken with Canon 5d mkI, hand held at f/4 ISO 1000, focal lenght at 17mm, Exposure 1/20.... only once I used this lens with my Canon 5D mkII at f/4 and the edges were extremely soft.

with those small pictures you cant really judge the image quality.

i read so much about very bad border quality with this lens.

How does the combination small camera + big lens feel in the hand? Is it odd to hold?

Dear my friend gshocked.
Yes, The set up that I use for EOS-M = B Level, Because my big hand.
Please let me tall the truth,  For the Big Lens start from 70-200 mm and  UP, I would rather use my 1DS, 7D with Battery grip and 5D MK II with battery grip better, But for EOS-M, Just for the Small lenses and Just for Fun and portable camera witch on my belt pack 85% all the times,  to use in every day shots such as the  people on street shots, because this tiny camera with tiny M lens, make them more comfortable than the big " PRO " cameras.
Nice to talk to you, Sir. Have a great work week.

I may have the chance of picking this lens up used for $470, so would any owners of this and the 16-35L advise me if it's a good purchase, or will I always be longing for the 16-35L?
Both have the same minimum focus distance and aperture blades, and I live in a very sunny country, what would your recommendations be?
Many thanks in advance.

It is a good lens to use on APS-C.

Respectively disagree. I believe in using the right tool for the job. And making a "normal zoom" out of an ultra-wide angle zoom never made much sense to me, especially with much better options on the market. Even a standard 18-55 kit would give one better performance, greater zoom range, far less weight, and an enormous cost saving factor.

If one was looking at that price range ($400ish used market, $700 new) and weight/size, a far better option would be the excellent EF-S 15-85. Or how about the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 Art?

Maybe years ago when the kits lenses were sub-par and the market had limited normal zooms for APS-C, an UWA like the 17-40 might have been a viable option. But I just don't see that today.

The 17-40 is a great deal *if* you 1) get a good copy that doesn't have centering issues and 2) you are comfortable shooting at f8 or smaller, particularly <20mm. Neither of those was true for me so I sold mine cheap and bought the 16-35 f4 and I've been very happy with the upgrade. Being able to get good edges and corners at f4-f5.6 is really helpful to me for event and travel photography, and the center is stellar at all focal lengths (like the 17-40). I started with the 17-40 on crop and was pretty happy, but switching to FF really showed its weaknesses.

Here's a good, balance comparison of the two from Graham Clark: http://www.grahamclarkphoto.com/canon-16-35mm-f4-review-hands-on-shootout-17-40/

Tempting price, though, as long as you go into it with the right expectations and know your needs.

I already have a Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 for my 70D, so I was looking for something to use on my 5DIII.  The used price of a 16-35 F4 is almost double the price of this 17-40 here, so I think I'll just wait it out for the mark III 16-35 to have an effect on the price of the old mark II, then I'll grab one of those; there just seems to be too much negativity surrounding the 17-40  :-[
Thanks for your input guys.

My favorite wide angle on crop is the 10-22. However, the 17-40 is a very good lens on full frame, seen the prices you can find nowadays on internet.

Hi Stewart, I can relate to your situation. Before picking up the 6D, I shot a Tokina 11-16 on my 70D. However after upgrading to full frame, it only made sense to pick up a UWA zoom for it as well, for landscape shots and the like. While the new 16-35 f/4L IS is the better lens the 17-40 is no slouch, especially if stopped down and used for landscape. Most people focus on sharpness, but one area where I believe the new lens is better is distortion on the edges. For example if you shoot at 17mm on the 17-40 and have people on the edge, they'll look bloated and fat. Again, not really an issue shooting landscapes, and frankly this is an issue all UWA lenses deal with, just some do it better then others.

I ended up picking up a used 17-40 for $400 of craigslist and have been very happy with the results I get from the lens. Personal Note: Of course I managed to drop it this last summer Cracking the front element, denting the filter, only a month or two after owning it so I had to send it in for a repair. Of course with all the part replaced it's essentially a new lens. :)

But like you I struggled, as people on this forum speak as if it's a bad lens and the new one is sooo much better. The reality is that if you looked at posts 5 years ago I'm sure you'd find the same people singing praises of the 17-40L.

I don't get super pixel peeping, test chart shooting. I just care about real world results. When the deal on the 17-40 came along, I was hesitant. What put me over the edge what this guy's video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7n1L1QCjqU

It's a little long, and he does start out test chart shooting, etc. But I look at the images he can create and very quickly realized that it is not going to be the 17-40 f/4 or the 16-35 f/4 that will be holding me back. The reality is the lenses are much closer in performance then you'd think reading on a forum full or enthusiasts and pros who are always salivating over the latest greatest.

One other thing that held me back, is these are slow lenses. I'm just a poor enthusiast so getting the most out of my gear is important. I asked myself if maybe I needed an f/2.8 UWA zoom so the lens could double for event style shooting as well. I got close to picking up a Tokina 16-28 f/2.8 however the lack of being able to take filters was a no go for me. Same issue when eyeing the new Tamron 15-30.

I took My 6D and only this 17-40 as my only gear into my yearly BWCA trip this year and am very happy with the results. I got a handful of solid, long exposure, scenic shots up there and am glad I brought this lens.

In short I can recommend this lens (assuming you get a good copy), especially if you are getting it for sub $500. I feel that is good value. My biggest personal complaint (and could be just my copy) the focus/zoom rings are not the most damped. I've missed more then one shot by bumping the focus ring in between focusing (BBF) and pulling the trigger. But with anything else, it is just getting trained/experienced with your gear.

Best of luck on whatever you decide and happy shooting!

Here is one of the first shots I took the day I picked it up. At even at f/4, I find the lens plenty sharp for me. Feel free to zoom in on the face (granted I know it's only 2048px) and let me know what you think.

Went to Blenheim Palace recently armed with my 17-40mm L, a Hoya 10 stop ND filter and a travel tripod to take long exposures of the Grand Cascade (designed by Capability Brown in the 1760's)

Great lens.

Beautiful pictures. Especially the first one. Well done.

Out of camera JPEG (except for downsizing and watermark). I probably need to lighten it.

This is from my first trip with newly acquired used version of 17-40. I have never used wider than 24mm but wanted this for a trip to Northern Arizona and found one at Adorama for 459. I am very pleased with the results. Yes reports say the 16-35 f4L IS is sharper in corners and if I had the money I would have gotten it. Really I don't even have the money for this one, but I decided if I found one under 500 I would go for it.

This shot is at 21mm, f9 for 2 seconds, ISO 400 on a 5D3.

Looks great. I like the dark look of the photo, so I wouldn't lighten it much (if at all).

The 17-40L was my first lens when I changed to digital and it served me well for a very long time on my APS-C bodies.

Nice shot, thanks for posting.

Any reason why the lens doesn't render the street lights into sun stars?  f/9 should be stopped down enough to do that, so I'm perplexed.

@ ahsanford - I don't think f9 is a small enough aperture for the starburst effect. Typically (as I understand it) you need f22. Maybe f16 is enough, but apertures larger than that do not work in my limited experience.

I do not know if focal length has any effect or not, meaning I don't know if it is harder to get with wider angle lenses. Perhaps someone reading this has the answer?

Certainly, that effect pops more when you stop it down further, but you should see something sunstar wise at f/9, one would think.  Attached are two 24mm FF shots at f/8 (handheld, 1/250s) and f/13 (a solid 25s on a tripod) respectively -- no trouble with stars on the 24-70 f/4L IS, and my experience with the 16-35 f/4L IS has been similar.

Sorry to nitpick a lens detail like that.  I'm a rank amateur at this, so I must be missing something else -- perhaps proximity to the lighting itself?  Both of my shots the lighting is quite a ways off, whereas you were within a block of your lighting in Winslow there.

There are very faint and diffuse starbursts in the 'Standin on a Corner' shot.  Those areas of the image are a bit soft, there may be some mist in the air, and with the light sources OOF, that also mitigates the starburst effect.

You certainly don't need f/16 or narrower for the effect, nor do ultrawide angles preclude it.  Below are 14mm f/11 and 17mm f/8.
