Title: Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Post by: Goincarcrazy on January 03, 2011, 12:13:28 PM
The crop body user's ultra wide angle.  I'll admit, I didn't really see a need for this lens since I had a 17-55mm IS as well, but as soon as I got it, it rarely came off my camera.  Great for architecture, landscapes, fisheye (when close to the subject), car shows, you name it!  It certainly offers a new perspective on the world around you.

I love the 10-22mm.

I took one borrowed from friend to Nepal whilst trekking to Everest Base Camp.  The shot below was taken just 15km from Base Camp as I was just entering Gorak Shep.

Also wanted to contribute to the collection of sample photos from this amazing lens. All taken with an EOS 40D.

Thank you very much. It was also my walk-around lens when I had my 40D. Now my walk-around lens is the 16-35mm II which I also like a lot.

Amazing photos guys! I'm sold! I'm picking this up next. I was deciding on this or the 17-40L to replace my kitlens (since I use that for landscapes too) but I'll go ultrawide first. :)

This is a image gallery for the Canon 10-22mm EF-s lens.

I cleaned it up to remove off topic posts, (including my own).

Thanks, and post your EF-S 10-22mm images or related discussion.

I no longer have my EF-S 10-22mm, but that's because I added a 5DII to my kit, and the EF 16-35mm II to cover that focal range.  Still, the EF-S 10-22mm is a great lens - in fact, it has much less barrel distortion at 10mm than the 16-35mm II has at 16mm on a FF body.

Anyway, here are a couple of shots with the 10-22mm:

I love this lens, it makes great shots for architecture on the wide end, and short focusing distance even makes the other end nice for close-ups...

I am replacing my Tokina 11-16 with one of these later this week. I can't take the flare anymore, the Tokina while very good at some things is useless in the city at night. Looking forward to posting some pics shortly! :)

First day of shooting with the Canon EF-S 10-22. A few things I have noticed in comparison to the Tokina 11-16:

The Canon:
- has a more usable range (obviously)
- the colour on the Canon is a bit better
- distortion is better on the Canon
- a little less chromatic abberation aka fringing

On the negative side, it does not appear to be as sharp. I will do some more intense side by side comparisons at some point before I decide which is to stay and which is to go but so far it looks like the Canon is the keeper for me as it's a bit more versatile.

Thank you very much. It was also my walk-around lens when I had my 40D. Now my walk-around lens is the 16-35mm II which I also like a lot.

@esbenlp Great shots! Question: If this was your walk around, when were you walking around in space?! How did you get those curvature of the earth shots with the blackness of space above?  I can't believe no one else on this forum said anything about that! :) good stuff.

I use almost all the time 10-22 when I'm in the wild or in city travel. The zooming range is so versatile and when  used with polarizer the colors are unbeatable.

Nothing beats this lens for storms on a Canon crop.  In the past I always had to drive a couple more miles with the 17-40 if I wanted to get the whole storm in.

Lightning flashing as the shot started flashed the truck body.

One of the best qualities of the lens is you can point it at light sources and just not get flares.  Best flare resistant thing I've shot.

Also great for atmospheric optics.

Get it, you will not be disappointed, incredibly sharp. This would probably have been designated an L-lens were it not for the EF-S mount and lack of weather sealing... Optically it is fantastic.

the Canon 10-22 is likely the best ef-s lens they have made... even though one it was one of the first   .....   solid, sharp...accurate, repeatable focus

when I left the crop world, I sold mine for more than I paid for it.....
I had sold all the other consumer lenses.. but the 10-22 stayed on my 50D for a while....

the 16-35 II on a 5D II was a little better....
but the 10-22 is the best Canon wide for the 1.6 crop cameras
I loved mine

As far as I am concerned it should be the kit lens for the more expensive crop cameras ...
because wide is so hard to come by for them.

Thanks.  Well it was on the rebels I've had(95% of my stuff has been via rebels).  Recently switched back to 5D II and just sold it/the 10-22.  Had two so far and both were great.

fwiw it's good enough for nat geo.   http://press.nationalgeographic.com/2012/08/15/ngm-september-2012/ (http://press.nationalgeographic.com/2012/08/15/ngm-september-2012/)  That was shot with the 10-22 on a T2i.  For some reason I always thought maybe some would find that interesting, perhaps more for the rebel aspect(even if it's silly since just the sensor is the most important part for such stuff).    Not sure why if Time is taking Iphone shots I guess.  Course then there have been some other bigger uses from an original 6mp rebel and its really really really bad kit lens.  When looking back at some stuff I feel pretty stupid fretting too much over small lens issues, yet here I am still always doing it anyway.

I'm not sure about that. And I mean that literally, I am undecided. I sold the Tokina 11-16 to get this lens and I do miss the Tokina's sharpness. It was, by no small margin, sharper than the 10-22. I also found the 2.8 of the Tokina occasionally handy, yeah not a landscape feature but still, I did use it a couple times for other types of shots. There were two major reasons I switched to the Canon 10-22, the first was that the Tokina is a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE flare monster. I got moon flare from it. Not kidding, moon flare. Bad moon flare. I had intended to do more wide night shooting in urban environments and the Tokina is not up to that. Maybe the new version with coated element(s)? will solve that. The other problem I had the Tokina is that it's as near a prime as a zoom can get. The 10-22 has much better flare control and the zoom range on the is much more versatile. I still haven't got around to that night shooting. Anyway, this post is not to nitpick at either lens but to say that one or the other is a very viable alternative depending on what you shoot and what you want. Now if the 10-22 was as sharp as the Tokina and had a fixed aperture, even f4 would be cool, I wouldn't miss the Tokina for a second.

I agree with all the folks who say that this is their favorite crop-body wide lens.  Occasionally, I wish I had a little more light gathering, but otherwise, it's a great lens that tends to take very crisp shots.

Here's one of my latest using this lens. ISO100, f/11, 4minutes... Due to the filters I used the effective f-stop was f/3983 :) :)

Love the lightning shot!   That's awesome!

The tornado's a tad bit close for me though....  :o

Thank you CR members for yet another excellent thread.................to cost me a small fortune  ;D

A great lens indeed. I liked the 10-22 on crop better then I like the 16-35 2.8 II on FF.

Here an oldie (2007) taken from a driving car in the Serengeti. EOS 30D, EF-S 10-22 @12mm, ISO 200, 1/640, f/9

And another oldie (2010) from Yellowstone (I believe it was Mammoth Hot Springs). EOS 30D, EF-S 10-22 @10mm, ISO 100, 1/250, f/8

I continue to use this lens on my 6D and 5D111, but with caution. One can not go any wider than 13mm or there is a potential for the mirror to hit the real lens element. To make it work, you only need to remove the black plastic piece around the rear element. You will get some vignetting at 13mm, but for the price of this lens, you can't get close with full frame lens!

Hmmm, I didn't even know it was possible to attach an EF-S lens to a FF body.

Great ads for this lens!  Anybody can have my excellent example if you can meet me in person in ATL:)

PM for details :)  I don't want to break a forum rule by linking to the ad I created last night.

If this is a violation, feel free to nuke it, I won't be offended:)

Fish shop in Bangkok's Chinatown taken with the EF-S 10-22mm.

I did a very quick comparison with the EF-S 10-22mm against the EF-M 11-22mm.  The EF-M lens has a big size and weight advantage, and because it is a much newer design taking advantage of recent developments in coating technology, etc, I was expecting the results to be roughly the same or for the EF-M to be slightly better.

The results surprised me.  Images from the old EF-S 10-22 just looked better - brighter, better colours, better saturation, more detail in the shadows.  Sample images here:

http://phil.uk.net/photography/canon_EF-M_11-22_STM_IS.html#versus1022

The EF-M 11-22mm is still a great lens, especially for travel because of its light weight and compactness, but in situations where image quality is more important than convenience I will still grab the EF-S 10-22mm.
