Title: Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM
Post by: esbenlp on March 06, 2011, 05:39:54 PM
Here are some sample photos from the second version of Canon's excellent 16-35mm lens. This is my most used lens, as I like the versatility of having decent wide angle and close to 50mm focal length with a crop factor of 1.3. The first two photos have been taken with an EOS 40D and the rest with an EOS 1D MK II.

Really nice set of pics, I enjoyed seeing the pics from my local stomping ground Asakusa and Ueno park at the wide angle as well.

LOVE the 16-35.  Would have to say that it's my go-to lens, though my new version seems to be way more contrasty its predecessor (which found an untimely demise after jumping off a fishing boat. Lenses, no matter how good, can't swim).

Hello Candyman - I used Photomatix though I am careful with the settings and try a variety until I get the effect I am seeking such as vertical / horizontal alignment, reduce ghosting, foliage etc.  Prior to completion there are other settings for tweaking such as Microcontrast.  Even flipping through low, medium, high and maximum can make a world of difference within the lighting section.

Thanks JR and Candyman for the kind words...Rev

I like the second image alot more revup, maybe its the monochrome

I rarely use photomatix these days but every once in a while i got back to it to play around
I have found that avoiding the temptation to push the strength slider too high has a big impact on how real the scene looks. I try to stay below strength 70

I also find night shots and urban shots can sustain higher strength values before they get to oh my god my eyes are bleeding levels.

I find photomatix automatically oversaturates and outright alters the colours and there is nothing you can do about it. Its too hard to fix this un natural colour shifting afterwards

If you are interested in HDR have a look at this method

I do agree with you.  After I am done tweaking in Photmatix, I give it another overhaul in ACDSee Pro 3.  correcting pretty much whatever needs to be done.  Thanks for the link, off to work but will have a peek soon.

Great shot and processing. Looks like a painting

What software do you use to process the HDR files?

Hello Candyman - I used Photomatix though I am careful with the settings and try a variety until I get the effect I am seeking such as vertical / horizontal alignment, reduce ghosting, foliage etc.  Prior to completion there are other settings for tweaking such as Microcontrast.  Even flipping through low, medium, high and maximum can make a world of difference within the lighting section.

I have downloaded the trial software and "played" with it. Great software and easy to use. I am going to buy it.
Thanks for sharing!

I'm considering the investment into this lens, specifically for its versatility and unique IQ.
Could some of you CR folks post photos produced by this lens in fairly dark conditions with or without flash(s)?
I plan to rent it in a couple of weeks, but I would love to see what everyone is able to do with this!  :D

Here are some shots with my 16-35 II and the 5D MKIII. I've throw in some really low light deals in there too, it was great for low light on my t2i and does even better on the 5D.

How much you loose? 16x1.6 = 25.6 - 35x1.6= 56mm

Love the flowers picture. what is the ISO? Planning to get 5D III and just wanted to get an idea on how well the III performs in low light.

Jonathan
wow
love the dock and the smooth water...

you also seem to have exactly the right saturation and colors...

very nice....  I see this framed....interacting with some other object in a room,....

it makes me want to be there to verify the reality.....

//////////

now I have a technical question.... as a boater of sorts...
is this dock  sort of  reaching out.... almost exclusively supported on the rock?....like maybe the pilings or support IN the water are not allowed ?  just meets the rules....sort of thing?

it seems to float above the water.. which subtly adds to some surreal effect... just for me...

the colors and processing are great...to my eye

thanks for taking a moment
TOM

Canon did a great job with flare control on version II of this lens.

One of the first shots from the 16-35 f2.8L II (used) I recently bought. At first I was disappointed in it's mid frame resolution. The focus was a bit off, and after a quick AFMA (+-12 on both ends =O), it started to perform a lot better. This was handheld, probably would have been a lot sharper had I used liveview and my tripod.

It should pretty much perfect as new. No way should it be 12. My 18 year old 28-70 2.8 is -11.

I think I'm ready to say goodbye to my 16-35 II now that I've pre-ordered the 16-35 f/4 IS and have the TS-E 17.  It's an excellent lens, but one that has seen very little use in my hands and has sat on my shelf far more than in my bag.  I can't really say that I've ever needed f/2.8 in a wide zoom, so the new lens makes a whole lot more sense for me and I'm going to sell my 16-35 II (PM me if interested).  Here are some of the shots I've taken with it:
