Title: Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD
Post by: dturano on June 02, 2012, 11:25:40 PM
Amityville hosts a small heritage fair every year, I was out with the family and had the new Tamron 24-70mm, I took a bunch of shots, they have a few old cars on display.

I took them in a rush because the family preferred the vendors, I did some post processing to make them pop.

Thanks for viewing, hope you enjoy them.

I picked up the Tamaron 24-70 F/2.8 Di VC USD after renting it for a couple of days and was so pleased by what I saw I picked one up too.  Normally I am a red ring snob but this lens is so good at what it does I have convinced some other professional buddies to pick it up too after they saw the shots it was capable of producing.  Thanks for sharing.

I thinking of getting this lens on my 7D instead of the 24-105L or the EFS 17-55.

I'm no pro and just barely starting into Photography. I just want to take some nice and awesome shots.

What do u guys think? Is this worth the price or just spend a little extra $$$ for the canon version? The Version II is just way out of budget for me. Rather spend that kind of money on the 70-200 L f2.8 IS USM II. JMHO

Well, depends what you shoot the most. The difference between 17mm and 24mm is pretty big, so, I'd say the choice would be between the 17-55 and Tamron 24-70. Then its just a matter of whether you need the wide end (landscape, larger groups, etc) or the longer end (portraits, etc).

No point in spending more for the old Canon version when it lacks IS, and when everyone is saying the Tamron is sharper.

Are these shots in HDR? Some of them look like they were? As noted above, I like the first B&W also.

Thanks

I´m interested in Tamron 24-70, too. I downloaded some of your pics because i wanted to check which Camera  and Settings to improve myself. Your Exif-Data say you used a Sigma 24-70 f/2,8 IF EX DG HSM.... just wondering.

I bought this lens as standard zoom for my 5D Mark III and found it to be very satisfactory. Let's see something different than cars.

Two portrait shots. I prefer the 100mm 2.8L for that but when space is limited this also works.

And this one is pseudo-HDR.

Here's one I took yesterday.  Note that the bokeh is still very nice even with the lens stopped down one stop (f/4).  I have found that detail and contrast holds up very well when shooting into the sun thus far:

Thanks for sharing so many good pictures.  I was not a big fan for Tamron because of the 18-270mm.  However, I still gave Tamron 24-70mm a try few months ago.  I was so impressed for the IQ and its amazing VC.  It was much better than my Canon 24-70mm MK1.  The only complain for me is the AF speed is not as fast as Canon 24-70mm.  Overall Tamron 24-70mm is worth any penny.

Even though it's worth every penny, did anyone get to pay LESS than every penny for it?

I've been waiting for it to drop SOME, but even the tamron rebates haven't included this beastie.

For some very, very odd reason the price seems to be better in Canada than in the US.  I have never seen that before.  I got mine at Simon's Camera in Montreal for $1139 CDN before tax.  Most US retailers seem stuck at the $1299 rate.  I guess the good news for Tamron is that they are clearly moving units at "full" price and haven't had to resort to any kind of price drop.

I was also waiting for Tamron rebates.  However, the 24-70mm had never been on its rebate list.  Finally, I got this lens when Beach Camera had 10% eBay buck few month ago.  That's about 100 bucks cheaper than its tag price.

Yeah, I guess it'll be 3900 amazon points which *IS* $39 bucks, better than a sharp stick in the eye.

AF is very accurate and is just slightly slower than the best USM motors.  Build quality is very strong - it is weather sealed, dense, and Roger has said the break down is good after they remedied an early glued seal issue in the very first model.

I had a similar issue.  Call Tamron, send it in, and they will fix it quickly.  It needs an updated circuit board.

Thanks for the response, I was really hoping for your reply, as you are probably the biggest evangelist for Tamron 24-70 in CR (I say that with great respect for the excellent results you achieve with that lens)  ... unfortunately, here in Qatar, we don't have any Tamron service center (for that matter any other service center that can fix lenses) ... also, I bought the Tamron 24-70 VC from Japan (through my boss), so if I want it fixed, I'll have to send it to Japan ... but I don't have time now, as I'm about to go on vacation for 15 days (to Australia) ... so far I have not faced any problems with the lens or its image quality ... just this annoying battery drain issue if I forget to leave the VC on while not in use (so most of the time I turn off VC, but when the camera is in use, it does not seem to affect the battery life), so I'm assuming it won't turn into a bigger issue if I never get the circuit board updated - what do you think?

I've never heard of it causing any other issue than the battery drain.  It doesn't affect lens function, but it will cause a slow but continual drain on the battery like you've experienced.  Its too bad you are disconnected from service like that.

Thank you ... considering my options, that is good news ... guess I'll just live with it for the time being. But I like the lens a great deal, the image quality is absolutely brilliant. I'll see if they can quickly fix it in Australia. Cheers.

This shot was taken with the 6D/Tamron 24-70 VC combo that I use a LOT while traveling.  Nice thing about the Tamron is that I shot this at 70mm and 1/13th of a second.  I don't fear doing that at all with a static subject.  It's VC is great!  This is a door that caught my eye leaving the Temple Mount in Jerusalem and heading out into the Arab Quarter.

I know when I read the DP review of the lens that showed the Mustache affect that the lens will produce.  And with the 5D3 or 6D (which I have)  you can't setup in camera corrects for this lens correct?   Which means and I've never tried is there a profile one can download for LR5?

Also anyone know if you can get a deal on refurbed lenses from somewhere?   Looking not to spend 1100 if at all possible.

Great pictures. Would it be a possible upgrade for the 24-105 F4 IS?

Bravo - these are some fabulous shots.  Particularly like the first and third of the series.

Whenever I leave my 5D MK III + Tamron 24-70 VC with VC turned on (even though the camera power is turned off), the battery drains very within a couple of days ... does anyone else face this issue?

I had a similar issue.  Call Tamron, send it in, and they will fix it quickly.  It needs an updated circuit board.

This is another reason why I don't like 3rd party lenses. Send it in for an updated circuit board on a £750+ lens so it won't drain my battery!! Be without the bread and butter lens... Ridiculous and if your a pro 'small' issues like this are a big deal.

I guess you've missed the numerous postings about problems with the EF24-70 ll. Many of those posters report receiving no satisfaction from Canon. I've read no such posts about the Tamron, and their warranty is for six years.

Regardless of the warranty and customer care after purchase. A product should work as described out of the box, not need to be sent back as soon as you purchase for an updated chip to be installed to stop it draining the battery. A lens that is not a perfect match for your camera is fairly normal which is why there is AFMA. Apples and oranges.

Perhaps you should have a look at this now 14 page thread:  http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=15231.0;topicseen (http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=15231.0;topicseen)

I completely agree with you in theory, but having issues with a lens is hardly unique to third part manufacturers.  My lens was out of my hands and with Tamron for about 8 days.  It has worked flawlessly after the fix and has been my most used lens out of a kit of excellent lenses.  To each his own...

So is this a fault Tamron have addressed with newer batches?

I actually don't know that for certain, but I haven't heard anyone complain about this issue recently.  I assume that they have corrected it.

Various pictures I've taken within the last year.  Glad I made the purchase.

I shoot with the Tamron for 1.5 years now. The distortion at 24mm and poor corner resolution bothered me a lot. For some motifs the 24mm wide end is unusable. Yesterday I ordered the EF 24-70mm L II to replace it. The stabilization of the Tamron is less useful than I thought it might be and I gladly exchange it for more resolution and sharpness.
