Been on a 50 1.4 for a year or so with my 5D2 now. Just bought one of these beasts and the novelty of 1.2 hasn't quite worn off yet, hence the aberration.  :P

Can I request for some action shots from this lens? It doesn't have to be fast sports or anything similar, I would just like to see if its possible to shoot moving subjects with this relatively-slow AF'ing lens.

Moving subjects?  How about a bird in flight?  (full image and 100% crop)

EOS 7D, EF 85mm f/1.2L II, 1/1600 s, f/6.3, ISO 2000

Still, the grackle was pretty far away - the 85L doesn't do very well with close, erratically-moving subjects, even if they're not moving too fast.  The body you use makes a difference, too.  The 7D will track moving subjects better than the 5DII, even with a comparitively slow lens like the 85L.  A 1-series body would do even better.

Very nice capture indeed, not surprised it was with you 7D...the 5DmkII is great for a lot of things, birds in flight I imagine just wouldn't be one of them....

My model here is 22 month old and this was shot at f3.2, ISO 400 with a flash...

I am thinking of purchasing this, Question is though,

How bad is the Purple Fringing?

I currently have the the 85mm 1.8, along with 50L, 135L, 100L, 70-200L IS II. Thinking of upgrading but my 85mm has purple fringing in high contrast situations and almost ruins pictures and I have heard the same if not worse on this one, I love the pictures it produces, and I know high contrast is rare, but I had it ruin a set of pictures at my last wedding not being aware of it. How bad is it, and is it worth it? (my lenses are used for 2 shooter's, myself and my 2nd shooter, which is why I just dont always use the 70-200)

7D @ f/1.2... purple fringing on Apple logo.

I sold it and bought the Sigma. I greatly prefer the Sigma. Fast AF, so sharp and so much contrast. I get amazing results on my Mk II.

Do any of the super fast Canon primes have low fringing at their widest apertures?

How bad is the Purple Fringing?

It's there, but not nearly as bad as the 85mm f/1.8.  Plus, the bokeh of the 85mm f/1.2L II is better, even with both at f/1.8.

2 lens characteristics you dont need to worry about on any canon lens
1 purple fringe and
2 distortion

lens correction in PS and lightroom fix these in seconds

biggest issue with this lens and the ONLY thing that stopped me buying it is how slow it is to Autofocus and that the flyby wire Manual focus relys on the AF system.

If you can live with that and can afford it
then it will give the best image quality you can get
BTW i chose the sigma f1.4 due to significantly better AF speed awesome IQ as said above by others

I mostly agree with you about distortion.

But fringing is something I've definitely struggled to get rid of in high contrast shots from my 50 f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.8. What's your Lightroom technique to get rid of fringing?

I just select len correction and choose CA option, the only lens of mine that the purple fring doesnt go away with is my Fd600 and thats becasue there is no profile so i need to set some time aside to make one but all my other lenses its great even my sigma 85 which fringes a bit at 1.4 however i usually shoot at f2 with this lens because its super sharp there.

Here are some shots I took at a recent ANZAC Day parade. I haven't really used this lens much for street shots in the past, but it seems to do OK

Ricky, I have been longing for an 85mm lens lately and had my eye square on the Sigma and have been looking thru online posts about it and found you posting on photography on the net with the sigma 85. Were you not happy with it that you chose to go with the Canon?
Thanks.

My most wanted lens is a tie between the 85mm f1.2L II and the 135mm F2.0L

AWESOME lens for half the money of the 85 1.2L and has a lot more versatility.

I love my 85mm 1.2 but always thought the focus was too slow for sports.  I took it to a high school basketball game last night and was very happy with the performance.  I just love this lens.  Here is a link if anyone is interested.  Only the last 2 photos aren't taken with the 85mm

How did you manage to focus properly in the second? Did you prefocus to a fixed distance?

I love my 85mm 1.2 but always thought the focus was too slow for sports.  I took it to a high school basketball game last night and was very happy with the performance.  I just love this lens.

Reason I'm asking, I'm going to go to a basketball game in about two weeks and wondering what to take along with my 5D3: 70-200 2.8 IS II or 85 1.2 II or borrowing a 135 2.0.

[edit:] I'll be up in the stands, unfortunately I have no information as of now about the distance to the field and the lighting conditions, but maybe the 85 lacks a bit of reach? Would the 100 L Macro also be a possible alternative?

wow som really nice work here...from the others.. people really show their love for the effects..

I also love this lens..
I like to go for an early walk as the sun ....gets ready... to rise....

one early morn experiment shown here ...

I bring the 14L II so when sun is finally UP...
I am doing a new, different thing....on the walk

fringing can be mostly corrected in Lightroom on these two lenses

for more people-oriented shooting... the lens captures and isolates ...in a fun way

sometimes I think of selling this beast.. but then I take it for a walk
....and it does some more tricks ..so I keep it

first ....... my grand child gets first guitar lesson from the Dad

this last guitar neck and cig lighter ...politeness for a passing wheelchair lady
... is the late Richard Collins .. a street / and blues player who had small success....
he stood on the corner for years...nice guy deserved to be named
I stuck a 135 f2 (also a nice lens) shot to see what he looks like ... this was a collection I did for his CD art

I NEVER passed him by .....with my camera without the 85L ...just for him
goodbye Richard

I haven't seen much on it, but another photog I met using the lens says the focus is faster on his 5D3.
Is this true to anyone else here? I thought this was only the case with the 1DX and certain lenses

I'm currently shooting with 5D III - AF speed is not quite fast. However, this lens produces wonderful photos for me. JPEG straight out from camera, no PP. Only resized.

All very nice, in the 2nd set I really like the first and last ones. The seargent on the horse is giving precise and specific orders to the soldier on the ground, he knows what he is talking about. The girl on the bench has just experienced a trajedy, she feels all alone.

I've been teaching my 8 yr old son the basics of photography and taking him out on expeditions with me.  Here's a portrait he took of me in the garage with low lighting with this lens.  It's one of the best portraits of me I've ever had.  We just set up his own flickr account to show off his handiwork from the last few months.  Most were shot with my really old 20D, but he's done well enough that I've upgraded him to my old 5D.

I'm a huge fan of this lens. The 85L and the 100L is pretty much all I use for portraits. The 85L is definitely a "slow it down" lens and I usually have to tell the subject to get into a pose and hold it so the AF can do it's thing.

When it sings, it sings.

Sorry, I wish I had the Canon 85mm f1.2L to make a good comparison with my Sigma 85mm f1.4. I have read the Canon AF is very slow and it's heavier than the sigma (also much more expensive).
I used the Sigma 85mm 1.4 as my portrait lens, along witht the fabulous 70-200mm f2.8L IS II.

Dear Mr. Hjalmarg1
The Slow AF  is Canon EF 85 mm. F/1.2 L MK I, But The one that I have for 2+ years = MK II is a fast speed for AF, But We need to know that The Big Piece of Glass which slow the AF speed down, Plus It need to turn the focus ring  1 round 360 degree to set from the minimum distant to the infinity, compare to my 24-70 mm L = just 1/3 turn/ 120 degree turn the ring--- BUT, I learn from my experience, Every time that I finish the shot, I will change from AF to MF. and turn the focus at 10 feet distant, and push the focus button to AF = super fast AF for the next shot---Yes, Just help the horse  to push the cart, because the cart carry the heavy load of big piece of glass.
Nice to talk to you.
Surapon

PS. I love my Sigma 50 mm. F/ 1.4 too.

I serve in my church's nursery class for the youngest kids.  In January, the older ones graduate so I wanted to get some photos of them before they left.  This was my fastest lens and I wanted to break it out and really see what I could do with candid portraits with it.  With such a narrow depth of field, moving kids and slower AF, I didn't nail the focus as often as I had hoped, but I still ended up with many adorable photos.  This was one of my favorites:

I think it helps that I'm with these kids every Sunday and they all know me.  They are used to crawling on my lap with a book, playing catch, or just being silly.  So it was just regular me with a camera.  I think if I were a stranger and came in with the camera, it might have been harder to get such natural portraits.

I think it helps that I'm with these kids every Sunday and they all know me.  They are used to crawling on my lap with a book, playing catch, or just being silly.  So it was just regular me with a camera.  I think if I were a stranger and came in with the camera, it might have been harder to get such natural portraits.

Yes, Sir, You are right on the target---I went to Studio Light/ Portrait Photography class at my local Community college too, and my dear teacher teach me that, when the Kids come, Do not just shoot and shoot, we as Photographers must sit down and talk to them ( with out camera in our hands) for 20-30 minutes first, Play and act with them, Give them the Candy or Desert--Or just talk, Until they use to us and our equipment---and then, that the real job begin.
Thanks you, Sir.

Same for me - When I first saw the configuration of the len's rear end I was really afraid that I would end up scratching it by accident while mounting it in the field. A few months later I find that with proper care there is very little risk of such thing happening.

No real issues so far, but you do have to use an extra level of care with it. You can't just willy-nilly slap it on there.

I just purchased this lens over the holidays and I can't get enough of it. The auto focus is not as bad as people say if you use it correctly. I have about the same success rate with the 85mm 1.2 as my 35mm 1.4 for sharp pictues of my two year old son who hardly ever stops moving.

I have this lens as well and, admittedly, while I love it, I have the autofocus issues that you referenced.  In one case, I was underneath an overpass at noon taking pictures of the graffiti, and the lens simply refused to focus.  How would you suggest one utilize the autofocus "correctly"?
Title: Re: Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM
Post by: jman on April 07, 2014, 11:39:15 PM
From my experience with the lens is that you have to be more prepared and prefocus on your subject. I have found that using servo has helped improve my success rate. I am generally tracking my son with one focus point on his eye and wait patiently for the right moment. I will typically shoot a small burst of images that generally helps get at least one sharply focused image. A toddler will challenge the focusing capabilities of any lens and camera.

In your situation of shooting underneath an overpass, even at noon, it can be extremely dark for the camera. This will make it difficult for any lens to focus. If you were trying to focus on graffiti and were trying to focus on a solid color area, then the camera will have difficulty due to a lack of contrast. Trying to focus on an area with multiple colors and with the camera's center focus point. This may help to improve your focusing next time.

He he, it was actually with intent  :P

If you look at this thread, and others like the newly started Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art thread and the Zeiss Otus thread, almost all images are shot wide open. With Gary it has become a trade mark, so it gives his images identity. But for a lot of the others, I think many of them would benefit from a slightly deeper DOF.

But I clearly see the logic; If you buy a f1.2 lens, it´s because you want to shoot it at f1.2 and the only way to master this thin DOF is to practice, practice and then practice  ::)

Do any of y'all shoot the 85 L in a studio setting with a solid color background.  Other than the blurring of the nose and face, it seems like it would be a waste.

I never shoot in studio so I love this lens because with the subject isolation it can turn any environment into a "studio."  Obviously shooting in a real studio with a solid backdrop you don't have cool/interesting bokeh to look at so you probably don't need that much subject isolation.  It is an expensive lens but I still wouldn't say it is a waste to use it for studio.  The thing is pretty ridiculously sharp (although I've hear really good things about the 1.8 versions as well, especially at smaller aperatures).  I really like the way this lens renders colors and tones as well.  Definitely expensive, but worth it in my opinion.  I've also heard the 85 1.8 has some pretty bad purple fringing.

I had the 1.8 and I now have the 1.2.  1.2 is other worldly I liked the 1.8 and didn't notice the people and greens, but if you pixel peeped, it was there at the high contrast areas.

I got $100 more than I paid for it, so it was a good deal when I bought it and a good deal when I sold it. Bought in the US and sold in Norway is normally a good deal.

I can't think of any significant advantage other than that.  I almost always use my 70-200 or 100 for studio portraits since the tripod collar makes for quick vertical/horizontal orientation changes.  Using a tripod allows me to pull my face away from the viewfinder to connect with my subject as I shoot, and closely monitor expressions at moment of capture.

The 85 is just too amazing on backgrounds and dof to shoot past f/2 :)

I love it as well which is why I made the decision to dump the 135 and 100 when I was trimming down. I find that I've been using the Fuji 56/1.2 about 95% of the time I need 85mm though which is why the Canon 85 had sat in my closet for a while.

I just re-afma'd my 85L... and I went from a +1 to a +9... so maybe I was really wrong the first go round.  Auto focus is still a little hit or miss... but I do love the lens combined with a little bounced flash.

A friend of mine shooting with XT1 + 56/1.2. IQ is excellent, not to mention, the looks of that combo is beautiful.

My a7s + FE 55mm f1.8 combo doesn't have look, however, I enjoy the high ISO shooting very much.

So I really liked this photo when I took it yesterday... the wife was indifferent...

BEAUTIFUL shot JD. I would print this photo on big canvas.

PS. Enjoy your vacation :)

Thanks.  It was a long drive... but we are in Colonial Williamsburg... so yeah... it's a vacation?

A very beautiful expression captured!

She's a typical mom.  Ok... everyone turn to me and smile.  So I'm not overly concerned with her opinion.

What a lens this 85L. In the first days I used this lens, I was really struggling to get sharp photos. I tried to use it on f/1.2, but that's very hard to get a sharp photo with that aperture, even that this lens had AFMA on my 1Dx. Now I mostly use it on f/1.8 till f/2.2. I'm really starting with it now, and it does please me now, and it will do even more in the future. :)

A few examples of yesterday:

I agree with Eldar, lovely Images Gary of a Lovely Young Lady.

Unlike Eldar I kept my Canon 85f/1.2 II, it's such a great Lens, perhaps a little slow on the 5D, but faster on the 1Dx, the Otus 85 f/1.4 is also a remarkable lens, but it does lack the AF of the Canon 85 which at times is very handy.

If I'm walking the streets I generally have both in the Bag.

I have a question about technique/dept of field and aberrations of the 85mm f/1.2L II lens. I will use three recent shots by Gary Samples of his cute little model (daughter?) as examples.  The one labeled "here's one more 1DX" has the prime focus on the blouse, or maybe a polka dot or two on the headband.  The seriously out of focus white dots have terrible green CA, which I find quite distracting.  The adorable one of her blowing a kiss has the eyes, eyelashes and eyebrows tack sharp, the mouth is modestly out of focus and the gloved hand has terrible purple CA.  The last one shot with the 5DS shot at f/2.5 has fantastic eyelash resolution, but the  mouth is out of the depth of field, and the ears are completely fuzzy.

I am not a pro, and only occasionally get to shoot outdoor portraiture. I lean towards more depth of field, with both the eyes and mouth/teeth sharp, allowing the ears to out of the depth of field, but not blurred.  I have include two samples, none even shot with my 6D.  The one with the blue tank top was shot with a lowly 40D, 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II at 135mm, f/5, 1/400 @ ISO 400.  The one with the red jacket vest was with a 60D, 70-200mm F/4 IS at 160mm, f/8, 1/500 @ ISO 200.  There is no obvious CA with these zoom lenses, but even with the much narrower apertures, the background is blown out with non-distracting bokeh.

Beyond the CA issues, how many photographers prefer a paper thin depth of field?  Certainly the eyes need to be sharp, but little else seems odd to me.

i agree - DoF should probably cover the entire subject. random out-of-focus subject bits are unpleasant to my eyes, but some people love the look.

at f1.2 with an 85mm you'd have to be 26 feet away from the focal point of the subject to get just 2 feet of depth in focus. on the other hand, i suppose there's some merit in isolating an on-axis face in a frame full of bubble blur...

i like pookie's shots. what i wonder is if the 70-200/2.8 can do the same thing? or is there really some sort of lens construction magic going on in the 85/1.2 that makes even its smaller aperture shots unique.

? what seems odd to me is non-pro voicing a un schooled opinion  ::) but again it wouldn't be canon rumors without it

If you don't like/need thin DOF then you will save yourself a lot of money. I myself am a sucker for thin DOF so I end up spending a lot of money for lenses with huge apertures (1.2).  Obviously these lenses have the added benefit of more light, allowing faster shutter speeds, but I'm paying to get that razor thin DOF. It's personal preference, but I do think the 85mm 1.2 has some "voodoo magic" to its images :)

Thanks for the kind words.  This was actually a sunrise photo shoot adventure and she did so good for it that afterwards I took her to breakfast.  Here's another from that morning and a picture of our Daddy-daughter breakfast date afterwards.

Incredible.  I love these pictures in the flowers.  The best part is how they look like they just happened naturally.  This is where I fail.  I have twin girls and have had limited success one on one, but getting them together has been a problem.  Mostly on my part because I get too much of an idea about what I want in in my head and they get impatient with me.  Luckily it isn't what feeds the family, but I sure wish I could capture moments like this.  Well Done!

I definitely fall into the amateur/hobby photgrapher category, but I love the 85 f1.2 for the ability to just point it at the subject and have that soft, dreamy and sharp look at the same time. This was just taken inside our living room when playing around with it.

Ha ha, I totally know what you mean.  I actually have three kids all under 5 years old and trying to get all three of them in the same frame (let alone the same focal plane) is a real challenge. I also find myself getting frustrated sometimes because I'll have a certain image in my head but they don't cooperate for me to get it ha ha.  Usually I just let them run around like crazy and try to get while I can, but most often it's just one of them at a time :)

On the subject of paper thin depth of field, here is an interesting discussion of the subject.

http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2012/06/in-defense-of-depth.html

Everyone doesn't like the eyes sharp and ears completely blurry.

So far I don't believe anyone has commented on the chromatic aberration of the 85mm f/1.2. In two of the examples I sited by Gary, particularly if you click on the photo and get the full-size image, there is more CA than I would be willing to accept from any lens.  The picture of the young girl is daring, and the focus on the eyes exquisite.  The same young lady in the polka dot blouse is enchanting, but the CA in the out-of-focus white dots is extremely high.  Does no one else find the aberration of this lens a problem?

Thank you, Click.
I really do enjoy getting everything in place in the original shot. Oh yes, do I, ever.
But now with these absolutely ridiculously fantastic plug-ins you can get to create the mood you are after, I mean, why the hell not use them? Sometimes you have a perfect photo that goes 'blah' at you. Then you take it through the selection of Alien Skin and maybe you get it to sing. If one take is not enough, nothing keeps you from applying another set, as you want.
It is so funny, people telling me that I am FALFSIFYING the true RAW.
Like hell I am. A digital picture is a series of nuls and 1's. The matrix of numbers is dechiffred in your computer to make math look like art again.

All the talk about 'original and nonmanipulated' totally loses its valeur when you see how a picture is recreated from the data that you captured  with your camera.

It is not TRI-X days any longer, or Echtachrome.
Let's face it.

Even back in the good'ol film days, processing film was a true art and an image could be manipulated in any number of ways. Even choices in film made a huge difference (none of which is news to us who did it). Instead of chemicals, environment and film... now it's LR,PS and plug-ins.

I came back to this post... I think I was on page 5....or so
just to see what is posted...

now...because of you all... I am out the door with the 85L ii  and 1dx2....
I especially like using the spot meter following focus point....with this lens...

I eagerly await the    85mm f1.4L I.S.   I may keep the f1.2

that coming lens and the 35L ii  deserve to be glued to their own camera body.....nearly

////////////

a lot of seriously lovely shots.....
notice how it usually is someone you love....
when you bring out this lens...   because it treats them so well

if you have used the lens and know the caution areas...
and THEN look at all these photos...
it is a class in itself.... on techniques with the lens

thanks everyone for more instruction
