The 50L is really for 50mm nuts like myself. It just has character.
I really like your reply here, no comparisons between us as photographers since I'm just a hacker (in golf terms). It doesn't always have to come down to what's 'best' all the time, it's what feels right what makes you happy with using it and the results you get.

My view is quite a simple one. If you look at National Geographic magazine you will see photographs beyond what we see on here. Yet,they were all taken in camera. If such can be taken in camera, why do you need a computer to make your images look better when they dont?

The thing about this statement --for the most part...nat geo shots are carefully planned voyages (sometimes multiple voyages) to epic locations ---- EPIC LOCATIONS!!!!!!!! (and yes they do post process things too)...  I live in Buffalo NY, and while there may be some nice spots to shoot... other than niagara falls is there truly anything epic here? --- nat geo Epic????  I do not have thousands of dollars in travel budget...and my wedding and portrait clients don't have thousands of dollars to spend to have their wedding at the top of Mt Everest, or the jungles of Brazil, or deep in greenlands glaciers, or off in the magical hobbit land that is new Zealand...we aren't going to the tops of the Andes, not hiking through Cambodia, no sleek desert dunes of Tatooine (LOL...Tunisia), no engagement shoot at the great wall of China, no South African Diamond Mine, and not in a tribal village in New Guinea......I could go on and on but you get the point I hope.  Nat Geo goes to EPIC places!!!!! They also have the budget to wait out the weather if need be.  They also have the budget to go back if they wait 2 weeks and the weather doesn't work out.  They have their own submarines for crying out loud, subs, helicopters, planes, large boats....so yeah, Nat Geo can hold to a more natural approach...because they are generally going places that are so epic they don't need much manipulation.  Most of us don't have EPIC locations at pur doorstep, most of us are engaged in the art of pulling the beauty out of and or creating magic from a mundane scene.  LOL...  in the portrait/wedding world, it's like wondering why you handle a sports illustrated swimsuit model with full wardrobe and makeup crew differently than a plus sized bride at a budget wedding....
Just a note, Cambodia's countryside is not epic. Ive lived here three years and have yet to find those breathtaking views. Im actually out in the provinces now. It's 5 in the morning herre and me and my friend are going out in a while to capture the sunrise. Will see what I get. Vietnam is epic.

But I agree on your point.

Ok...so as you can see there...never been to cambodia to know it's not epic...lol...
Well now you know  ;D

I understand what you saying. I looked at the photo a long time and the bland sky kept irritating me so I added the cloud. But the moment I did that I got bit unsure of myself and posted here to get advice from experts.

If by "experts" you mean expert photographers, forget everything I said.  If you mean expert at having opinions, then mine are still valid.   ::)

+1 on that regarding myself also.

As said, it comes down to what you will use the picture for. To hang on your wall or sell prints, then no problems at all. Even for publishing I would say, depending on which context.

Again Sanj, thanks for starting this thread it's important to have a philosophical discussion about what we do also.

As so often Sanj starts an interesting thread. I really enjoy reading this, what strikes me is that most people are talking in evolutionary terms, a little better of this or that. Where are the wishes for the impossible? I am actually not sure what I would like. I want to be able to keep control over as much as possible, even blurry pictures can come out as art, but with the option of letting the camera make choices of course like automatic rating or auto delete if you so wish.

Also like The Bad Duck says, AF points spread wider, but that would come down to the glass also I guess.

An updated 24-105 is something I'd like (evolution not revolution), maybe 2.8, better IS, maybe a little longer.

I would just take the 60D and the 24-105, maybe if you have a wider alternative as a second one also. That should cover the most. I live in a very dirty and dusty country and often go to the beach. I always have a cotton scarf for myself and that I also use to wipe off the camera over the course of the day, sometimes I use it to cover the camera also.

With regards to this. Which app would you recommend? There's plenty on the Play store. I have a 5D3 and will soon get an S4. Re möte triggering and intervalometer is what I am looking for. How can I connect with the 5D3?

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Prices trending higher?

What I don't understand is why MAP is keeping prices high when the YEN has fallen considerably in value in recent months. Japanese exports should now be much cheaper for buyers.
This stuff is slow moving, they could have hedged the currencies for six month periods for example. You never know when the cut off points are. Plus it's driven by market dem and, they will maximize profits when they can.

hi, I have a Crumpler bag takes my 5D3 with th 70-200 MkII mounted and an extra lens on the side.  From tjat I can also take out the inner camera padded bag. It has a front compartment that closes with zippers. Im very happy with it and often use it. Don't remember the product name but check their homepage.

Do you really think so? Canon has an organisation locking up great customer features available in their cameras providing extra value and functionality without having to accept responsibility for it to work. That is an ideal situation for Canon. Large companies are always happy for that, if they wanted they could lock it, but they don't, it's part of their ecosystem and they don't have to guarantee any functionality. It makes all the geeks happy that they can 'beat the system' and it makes Canon happy that they will have the geeks saying good things about them.

5D MK III Sample Images / Re: 5D MK III Images

I agree, I'm actually out several times per week, it's just that I feel that this takes more time and equipment compared to other types of photography, I need to overcome that obstacle.

thanks
J

I agree that bringing the equipment and filters especially the tripod is a bit cumbersome but there's some sense of self-fullfillment once you achieve what you have pre-visualized. That's the beauty of shooting.  :) Cheers and have a nice weekend.  :)

Cheers,

Rik

Yep, it's just not in my comfort zone yet also I think. I will have to make a conscious effort to get out and get it done soon. I'm likely to get hooked on it as I am on some of the other stuff.

thanks
J

Here's our latest picture, shot with the 5D mkii and 24-105 f4.

Taken from a small mountain in the English Lake District National Park called Haystacks, looking north west, late evening.

Did someone on CR once call this lens 'garbage" ?  ;D
I certainly never did. I love it and use it most of the time. I love the photograph, I hope to go there some day.
