The 135L vignettes at F/2 on FF.

I knew about vignetting, but did not think it was that pronounced. But it is the general darkness and muddyness that worried me, not just the vignetting

Have you tried turning on peripheral illumination correction? Or added the 135L profile to the camera

Thank you very much for this link, that information is inaluable, I already have loaded the profile and the few test shots I did at home show good improvement.

My 550D shot were indeed at much higher ISO (1600-3200) but they were again in Auto ISO, I believed that the 5D Mark III will select the appropriate one too. I have not set maximum Auto ISO, I will check later if it was set to 800 out of the box
AS for the metering - I tried all But I believe the best results came out from Center-weighted average, as Northstar has suggested.

so the camera, if it's reading lots of floor, and will underexpose to get it down to 18% gray...  it almost makes perfect sense...  AV may be dicey depending on the min shutter speed set and high ISO set...  TV would be more predictable when shutter speed is needed... then you can set exposure comp...

thanks awinphoto, this really makes sense! I will try TV mode and also catchin less floor the next time. Now that I look at the photos, the ones with more floor are worse! and will also take into consideration the shutterspeed for the inconsistent lighting, as some have suggested

Hey everyone, I need some help about settings of my new 5D Mark III

I received it 3 days ago and the very next day I went to a basketball game of a friend of mine to test it. I am coming from 550D which I know is much less complicated to set up but still the results from my new camera were discouraging. I also got "Canon 5D Mark III Experience" by Doug Klostermann, it seems amazing but in 1 day I had the time only to skim through the most important parts from it.

My lens is 135 f2 L and every shot with it and my 550D was very crisp and bright and sharp.
On the 5D Mark III I tried everything I could but the results were dim and dark

I was shooting on Manual, @ f2, 1/320 to 1/500 sec, Auto ISO. The ISO indicator was changing from 200 to 800 I think. The results were all dark like that... I tried with fixed ISO 1000. Then at the one end of the court the pictures were bright enough but at close they were still dark (and I don't think I can change ISO every time the attack changes the sides, at least I never had to do it with my 550D).
The lighting in the hall was not very strong but it was far from what is portrayed in these photos. I tried different settings of WB and found out Auto was the best. I also tried different metering - it did not improve anything. Also is it normal that the image gets so dark in the corners???





I know it's me, but what am I doing wrong, please help!

P.S. I am not shooting in RAW, at least not when I am shooting just for pleasure, but these JPEGs should be much better, no?

I was so upset - I had set a psychological limit of $3000 and was waiting for my annual bonus. I received it yesterday, only to see the price going up again... $300 more just because MAP went into force seems unreasonable at least to me

Stop comparing a photographic camera (Nikon) with a video DSLR (6D). There's no comparison.

from my point of view .... Nikon wins..... the last stronghold that canon my have in the ''war'' with D600 is destroyed.

As a 7D user that wants to upgrade to FF i am left with 2 choices: 5D3 or Nikon. more appealing at this moment is Nikon.

Nikon wins??? Look at the Canon 6D video shot in a dimly lit cave @ ISO = 12800. Canon has won the video DSLR battle again....just as they did 4 years ago with the 5D mark II

Why would they release yet another video DSLR, they have a special line with several cameras this year. This was meant to be an entry-level photographer's DSLR! Even if it is video DSLR, D600 has clean HDMI output and headphones jack, how can you claim Canon wins?

Well, I can say that Image 5 (Portrait at ISO 200) is a definite win. I rate it at 10/10.

from the first samples available ( Canon 6D and Nikon D600 ) Nikon CLEARLY wins.

I am a Canon fun and use Canon gear from many years... but i must admit... in this  days Nikon is better.

My personal preference is to see all the face in focus.

The 6D shot is clearly out of focus, look at the eyes. Perhaps a result of the crippled AF system

If you want a nice camera, pay for it.

If you can't afford it, don't bitch about how Canon sold you short or how they should do something like a D600.

Another $1000 and you have a 5D3, get a job, earn some more, save some money and buy what you want rather than hope a manufacturer will give you something for nothing.

Wow, what a condescending post!  You sir, are an asshole.  I have had nothing but great experiences on this board until this whole 6D thing... and for some reason it's brought out the assholes.

I have a job... a really great one where I make plenty of money (and work hard for it).  Photography for me (and a lot of people including the main people the 6D and D600 are aimed at) is a HOBBY.  As such there are other places in our lives where we put money other than camera gear... and an enthusiast is always smart to shop for the best deal they can get with their dollars.  That's what allows them to continue their hobby while keeping a balance with the rest of their lives.

Could I buy a MKIII? Absolutely!  Do I need a MKIII?  No.  If I am spending $2000 (which is a decent sum for a hobby) do I want the best camera I can get?  Yes!  Is that best camera a D600?  That is looking likely.

This is nothing personal.  I'm not advocating that everyone jumps to Nikon or anything like that.  But Canon does need to understand that the hobbyist is willing to leave for a better ship.  I don't take change like this lightly, but when the facts are staring you in the face and you have to decide where to put your money... You cannot deny that the D600 offers MUCH more for the same price.

I'm not going anywhere just yet.  I'm going to wait for the real reviews and make an informed decision... but right now it's not looking good.

Please get off your high horse and try to understand why the rest of us are dissappointed n this announcement...

A few things people are talking about confuse me.

Firstly, if Canon produce a higher MP 5D then it'll have to be more expensive than the 5D3 (as not to annoy people like me who have just bought one). Then they'll have their own version of the Nikon D800 that costs twice as much so nobody will buy it.

Secondly, if Canon produces a FF camera that is cheaper than the 5D3 then it'll have to be a lower spec. Say that of the 5D2. But Canon already have a camera the same spec as the 5D2... the 5D2. So why spend millions in development of a new product that replaces one they already have when they're going to sell it at the same price?

Because the 5D Mark 2 is a 3.5 year old camera. It isn't new and it isn't compatible with Canon's newer accessories.

For example, the 5D mark 2 does not hook up to the new GPS adapter.

Secondly, the sensor is old. A newer sensor would allow PDAF with (for example) the 40/2.8 IS STM in live view.

Need I continue?

Interesting points, Dilbert but it still feels to me like a lot of work and cost to Canon to fill an awkward gap in the line up that perhaps doesn't really need filling... or at least may disappear in a year or so when the 5D3 price starts to drop or the 7D2 comes up from the rear.

Although the 5D2 is getting on a bit the IQ does still fits between the 7D and 5D3. Just my thoughts anyway and you're of course entitled to your own. I do however think compatibility with the latest accessories is a valid reason to end the line... or at least push out a firmware update.

1) How do you know the 5D3 price will drop? Afterall, the 5D2 price never dropped very much. What if in 2 years the 5D3 is still over $3000?

2) What if there is no 7D2?

Imagine that you are shopping for a camera. Amongst your choices are a $2200 camera that is over 3 years old. Scattered around it are newer cameras with more megapixels and better IQ. Just how attractive is that 3 year old camera really going to be?

Sorry to disagree with you, i feel Ayelike has some valid points and you are not addressing them :
1. I suppose he says why anyone will buy a new camera if it will have so similar specifications to 5D2 (the GPS adapter and PDAF alone are not sufficient in my view) when the competition has a new camera with better specs at lower price?

2. Why would anyone buy a Canon 5HD at double the price of D800, or if Canon 5HD is less expensive, why is 5D3 so expensive?

In general you are discussing why someone would buy a new vs. an old Canon camera, but you are totally disregarding competition

You are so right! All Canon apologists should not ne bashing people who want a feature that can come handy in many situations and that is present in the bodies from the competition - are all people who got Nikon D4 & D800 bad photographers? Before anyone accuses me of being a Nikon troll - I have only Canon equipment and planned to go full frame and further invest in glass but all this elitist and arrogant attitude from the company and fanboys makes me suspicious

I can get a 135 L at a bargain, but the glass on the distance meter is missing. Can this be a problem - i.e. dust entering the lens, or it should not cause any problem?

Thanks everyone for the input, I guess I will get the 1.4, since as many of you mentioned, for studio, the exctra cash for the L is not justified (unfortunately I live in a country where I can hardly find them + the Sigma and do tests, so I have to purchase online). I'll spend the rest of my budget for 135 L since I am doing some indoor sports for friends too.

This brings me to the second part of my question - I can get a 135 L at a bargain, but the glass on the distance meter is missing. Can this be a problem - i.e. dust entering the lens, or it should be OK?
