Thank you for all the replies. It got me thinking quite a lot about which gear to get.

I will definitely go for a tele lens before I buy a wide angle.

The suggested Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 have been in my early considerations, but for some reason it got “replaced” by the Canon 15-85 f/3.5-4.5. I think I’ll end up with the Sigma, mainly because of the better aperture.

I like the idea of the fixed 200 f/2.8L and how it will make me walk around to get the better angle and perspective. I’m just a little concerned about the missing IS. How fast shutter speed is required to get rid of shaken images?

The 70-200 f/4L IS, the 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS or the 300 f/4L IS all have IS, but unfortunately at a much higher price than the 200 f/2.8L (non-IS). I was wandering if I should try to extend my budget to get one of these lenses or maybe just go with the cheap 18-55 f/4-5.6 IS lens.

As for a macro lens I hope my G9 will be sufficient until I can afford a real macro lens.

if those telezooms are to much for your budget you can look into 70-300non L. yes its not a L! but its a great start off lens. once you got better budget you can always sell it and upgrade. AS FOR WILDLIFE I WOULD CHOOSE a zoom over prime any day only because fixed length when in reality animals constantly move to different positions and wont have time to move back ten feet so you can get the shot.
and for macro i would look into 60mm macro lens its great lens i have it on my 60d and love it. and also works as great walk around lens, did i mention its really sharp and cheep!

i wouldn't go for the 50L although yes it does have better weather sealing and quieter auto focus but over all the 50mm 1.4 has better sharpness. have you thought about the 24-104L?

Of all the lenses I pull out of my camera bag, my 16-30mm f/2.8 is on my camera more often than any other.  As a professional wedding photographer, I am at evening events twice a week.  Have you considered getting one of these? Then you will have it when you upgrade to a full frame body.

Yep, big ditto!  My 16-35 L lens is my favorite lens for both FF and Crop bodies.

thanks Rusty TheGeek for the Advise I'm planning to get the EX 580II and possibly a smaller slave flash.  and yes i have looked at the 16-35L. seems to be a awesome lens.

Mt Spokane Photography thanks for the advise. but with flash will the 2.8 still not be fast enough?

i have had my 60D for little over a year now and i to had the same debate which camera to start of with and worried about the screen, read tons of reviews. but i finally decided this camera and never has let me down so far. the learning curve on it is not bad at all. yes it does have the same sensor but the i can out perform the 550d. when comes down to it that's what you want. the screen actually is really sturdy and comes in handy a lot and for a plastic body its actually really tough. as you can see from my screen name i am also a Park Ranger for National Park Service so i travel a lot through so rough remote places. so does my camera and has held up so far. i would recommend getting a pelican case they are the best when it comes to traveling in mud, dirt, snow, or water. another good thing to do is go to camera store and get your hands dirty. but when comes down to it our opinion does really matter your the photographer! go with what feels right for you. after all you are going to have it for a while.

I feel like anything past 24mm will be too long on a cropped sensor. The 24mm 1.4 would be fairly wide and be great for low light conditions with no flash.

However, with quinceaneras, I would imagine you are doing lots of large group shots with a flash. In that case, I would stick with the 18-135 or look at the 10-22 (If you are commited to using EF-S).

i was hoping to get an ef L lens but ef-s lens is not going to kill me. i was looking at the 16-35L II nice fast lens but little pricy is the mack 1 still available?

That 85L will be painfully slow when trying to capture an event like a quinceanera, I cover parties / weddings and eventually only use my 85L for staged shots... 35L will be perfect for low light with super quick AF and an EFOV of 56mm on your 60D. Kind of a classic photojournalism lens on a crop.

IMO, 24mm will definitely not be wide enough on APS-C. The 85mm f/1.8 is a great lens (one of the best values in the Canon lineup) - great for tight portraits on APS-C.

For event photography, the first thing you need to do is upgrade your core lens. In this case, there is an excellent option in the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM.

You should also get a backup camera body. Perhaps you can borrow one for this event. My 40D's mirror failed at a wedding reception in Cancun. Fortunately, I had my trusty 20D with me, so I could keep shooting.

i have a 60d as well with the 60mm macro and its a superb lens also works as a great portrait lens/walk around. did i mention its really sharp.

hi, so Ive been asked to do a quinceaneara i will be paid for it. i currently have 60D body, with 60mm f2.8 macro,  18-135 f3.5 and 70-300 L and going to be getting the ex 580 II or EX 600 flashes soon. i have been looking at another lens to ad before this for this kind of events this just little incentive. what would be a good lens to get? i was looking at the ef 35mm f2 and ef 85mm 1.8  any suggestions?
