EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Adobe RGB or sRGB please?

That's got me thinking...

Is the LCD on the back of the 5D Mark III "wide gamut"?  Or does it show just the sRGB color space?

They are fun to shoot.  I've shot hundreds of pics of them this year.  Here is a tip for you to catch one in a natural environment. Find a flower that they like such as a basket of petunias and hang it close to the feeder.  Then when you get ready to shoot, mix up some of their food and put it in a spray bottle.  Lightly spray the inside of several of the flowers on the plant.  Trust me they will find the "nectar" that you added to the flowers.  It may take some patience but you can get some great shots this way.

Thie pic I attached was with my 5d MkIII, 100-400L lens. Shot at 400mm, 1/640 sec @f/8.0, ISO 400. The picture is cropped to about half of its original size.

Mine is with a 5D3, 70-200 IS II at 200mm, 1/2000 sec F3.5, ISO1000..  It is cropped at around 1/6 the size (sorta.. it is very cropped)

What kind of autofocus do you use? I was using 9 point zone AF in AI Servo but it was hard most of my shots were out of focus, and the hummingbirds would move so fast...

All point AF was impossible, it was supposed to start with the single center point and start tracking from there.. but it would, just, not, pick up the bird...

I was also using the "case 5" AF.. for erratic subjects moving quickly in any direction.

It's a bit weird, but I feel as if the 35L focuses slower on the 5D3 than on the 5D2... and I'm talking about single point centre focus..  I've read the lense rental articles about AF and a newer faster and more precise focusing 35L is definitely something for me to consider, aside from the other more obvious improvements.

MFD is now 0.8m?

It looks amazing.

EOS Bodies / Re: first pic of canon mirrorless?

I overlayed a 7D and lined up the mounting ring as best I could (first pic), then traced around the sensor on the 7d and overlayed that on the EOS-M (second pic).

Pretty sure that's aps-c we're looking at.

What also intrigues me is that it looks like the diameter of the lens mount is large enough to accomodate a full frame sensor.  It looks like Canon may be playing the long game here, with a view to a strategic investment in a system which can be extended, rather than looking for a quick win.

Of course it's large enough, it's an EF series mount.  But you're right, Canon (as usual) are playing the big picture long game here.  They would never put everything on the plate straight away, got to leave enough features out to enable yearly upgrades.

You need it to be EF sized, to use the adaptor for all of our EF lenses... which it most certainly will have...

Now.. mirrorless FF?  I think it's unlikely.  You'd have to create another mount.. same flange distance as the EF-M, lenses with larger full frame image circles..  it probably wouldn't be able to use EF-M lenses, unless they do a crop mode like Nikon...

yeah, it's boring...

I mean, what does it have going for it?  Why would I choose this over a NEX an X-Pro or an OM-D?  The only thing that is has going for it (at least for me), is EF compatibility, but a small camera with huge lenses is not very enticing.

And if it is APS-C it's going to be a huge camera.

I remember a talk by the inventor of CMOS saying something about a sensor that can count individual photons..

I just hope that the next leap forward will eliminate "bayer" type sensors and the need for AA filters

Of course people care how it looks..  Do you care how your car looks? Or do you just care that it takes you places?

Look at the success of the X100..  what caught peoples' attention first, was its looks..

Why do people keep insisting that it will use EF and EF-S lenses without an adapter?   The flange focal distance for the EF mount is 44 mm...    Unless you think the Canon mirrorless will be chunky like the Pentax K-01.. then it will most certainly have a new lens mount.

Lenses / Re: Which L lens will be the first mark III?
« on: July 09, 2012, 12:37:25 PM »
Who knows if Canon is going to start putting IS on their L primes..   I'd say 85LIII, unless they add IS..  of course, the one that I know for sure is going to have a MkIII is the 70-200 f2.8 IS

I'm getting a 5D3, but being absolutely honest, for the sole purpose of landscape then the D800 is better..

I used the 50/1.4 for a long time, it's a great lens and for the price you can't go wrong with it.  I'm finding my ZE 35/2.0 is ending up on my body most of the time now, It's a lot more versatile.  It costs more than the 50, but is razor sharp with nice bokeh and a unique draw style.  I prefer it to the 35L, and it's quite a bit cheaper than that one to boot.

Yeah, except it is manual focus only, and the 5D3 doesn't have interchangable focus screens.

I have to say.. that ISO 4000 shot is astonishing.. I mostly shoot at ISO 1600 on a 5D2 and this looks worlds better..

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: No Focusing Screens for 5D MIII?
« on: March 09, 2012, 07:18:56 PM »
this is really starting to bother me..  I don't do a ton of MF but I like to see the DOF of my ridiculously priced L primes, and I hate the 1 series form factor..

I wonder what Jeff Ascough thinks of this.. I read that he MF a lot, and he uses the 50L... Maybe Canon will make a special 5D3 just for him...

I'm not sure what he uses day to day, but at Focus he mentioned using the 24-70 I, a 135mm and sometimes when needed a 70-200mm.

I think that wedding photographers with a style that uses primes will have a lot to weigh in about the lack of focusing screen. If the focus works, ok, but if not, and it's much harder to MF (and also when doing video), then it makes it pretty hard for shallow depth of field shooting.

This is where I got it from

http://photo.net/learn/wedding/wedding-photography-tips-with-jeff-ascough/

It's from a couple of years ago, so he might have changed the way he works, these are some quotes from the article:

"I’ve always loved 50mm lenses. My Leica Noctilux was my absolute favourite. The Canon 50mm f/1.4 was ok but I broke three of them, so I used a 35 f1.4L for a long time instead. When the 50 f/1.2L came onto the scene, I was able to get back to the 50 and that has been my favorite lens for ages now. My first L lens I bought was the 28-70 f2.8L and that was the lens I cut my teeth on, I had a tear in my eye when I sold it last year."

With the 5DII:
"I use the center focus point and I manually focus quite a lot."

He will probably be tempted to use the Leica M10 which is rumored to debut on Photokina this year, if it's as good as it should be.
