Ive been tracking the price of the 400 5.6L on B&H over the last while. It has been dropping in price since Christmas and earlier in the week it was down to $1199. The lens is eligible for $120 rebate now and the B&H price has gone up to $1339. So in my mind the rebate is not passed on to the customer.

Sigma 300 2.8+Sigma 2x for 700Euro which is around $900. It had been dropped but the shop allowed me to give a proper test drive and it was fine. 300 2.8 is such a sweet combo.http://canonrumors.com/forum/Smileys/default/cool.gif

Given that the newest bodies are needed to communicate with the 40mm for this upgrade. Does this support Roger Cicala's article that newer the lenses and newer bodies are able to do things that the older combos can't, like more accurate AF and communication for FW upgrades etc?

Why do you have to ruin my dreams?  And so quickly?!?   ;D  Oh, well, that's what I get for not doing the math...

LOL.

One more point to drive it home - compare a hypothetical 400/4L IS to the existing 400/4 DO IS.  What diffractive optics do is, in effect, bend the light more sharply.  That means a DO lens can be shorter than an non-DO counterpart (the 400/4 DO is shorter than the 300/2.8), but it still needs the same diameter, and it won't necessarily be much lighter.  It could be less expensive, since Canon's DO lenses do seem overpriced for what they are.

Well it would look like this prototype 400 f4L non-DO with an IS switch. Scroll about half way down.

The 400 f4 IS sounds exciting alright. It will obviously be longer and a little heavier than the DO for around the same price tag. Will the 400 DO be discontinued?
I think a 400 5.6L IS would appeal more to the masses, pricewise.

Looks to be a very bulbous element inside the front element that doesn't look right on the 24-70. Also the two primes have silver rings indicating ef-s?
