$7000-$8000.  Priced and marketed in parallel with the 1Dx as a flagship camera for the segment of users that complained about the 18mps of the 1Dx.  You know who you are, now's your chance to put your money where your mouth is.

Yes indeed, the 5D3 is good for sports.  I had the 5D3 on AI Servo for these two shots, with an off-centre cross-type AF point, and it did very well.  These riders were heading directly into my position (~20-30km/h) and the camera did well to stay in focus.

To summarize the progression of technology and research advancements pertaining to digital imaging sensors:

2012 Nikon/Sony  = Win
2012 Canon          = Lose

Can we not accept this to be fact and move on?  I'm not switching to Nikon... however, I can still give Nikon it's due credit.

EOS Bodies / Re: Anyone received D5M3 w/lens from Amazon?

Wow... "D5M3"!  I had to do a double-take before it made sense!  Haha!

I have an issue in just single shot mode, where when you half press for focus, the single focus point selected doesnt light up at all, so you have no idea what's trying to focus on where (if you say forget which AF Point you've left selected).

This behavior is driving me nuts.

Does this make sense to anyone else?

Dustin, you can go into your menu and change the setting that will illuminate the AF points red.  I can't remember where this option resides in the menu, but it does exist.  I'm at work right now and my 5d3 isn't here, otherwise I'd tell you exactly which option to change.  It's time to open your instruction manual or play around with your 5D3's menu.

I sent my 5D3 body into Canon Canada for the black tape fix.  I dropped off the body at the courier service Thursday afternoon and received the camera back on Monday afternoon.  Canon paid for the courier service both ways.  As well, the Canon service agent that helped me on the phone was very professional and courteous.  My 5D3 travelled more than 7000kms and came back to me in perfect condition.  The Canon Canada tech even cleaned and lubricated my 5D3 body for me.  Awesome!

The whole procedure didn't cost me any money, just 4 days without my camera.  I'm glad I did it though, because like you, I like to know that I have a camera that isn't affected by a defect, no matter how insignificant that defect may be.

Canon. We're not the best, but we're good enough for you.

Available everywhere better cameras are sold.

Retarded.  This is what's wrong with so many people on these forums.  It's amazing how much we expect out of our cameras and how little we expect from ourselves.

Why can't we expect Canon to produce the best cameras?  Conversely, why are you accepting mediocrity from any company that charges you for a product or service?  My question to you is completely detached from what I think about the quality of Canon products or the ability of the people on these forums to take quality images.  For the record though, I'm a great proponent of Canon products but that doesn't mean that I'll let them off the hook for producing a second-rate product.

Hahaha... baby goo!!!  On the Mac?!?!  Are you sure that's her fault?

Anyways, I have an X Pro 1... it's meant for someone who already knows about photography.  It's more "tech-y" and complicated (some prefer "quirky") than you think and your wife might get discouraged from using it after awhile.  It's a photographer's camera... for someone who can appreciate the amazing pictures that the awesome sensor can produce.  However, you have to put up with a few frustrations along the way to get those pictures.

I say stick with a DSLR, if not a 7D, then try a t3i.  The ergonomics and responses of a Canon DSLR are far greater than the X Pro 1.  I had a 7D and used it a lot, but I sold it and bought a t3i.  The t3i... I love the compactness, light weight, and it has the same sensor and many other features of the 7D.  I like to describe the t3i as a 7D without the weather sealing, weight, and fps... but WITH a swivel screen (super awesome).  Do you think that your wife is willing to learn photography in the rain?  Will your wife or yourself be able to take advantage of the 8fps?  The t3i will produce the same image quality as a 7D, but you'll save a bit of money in the process.

Macro / Re: Gross me out

I'm curious - what the fly is sitting on (second shot) and how did you shoot it? :)

BTW: Why disgusting only in macro? :)

The fly was sitting on dog sh$#t. I used an MP-E 65 + MT-24EX to shoot it.
You don't have to stick to macro, but IMHO macro does it best. :)

Dear goodness... oh sweet baby jebus.

Can the tape adhesive withstand increasing temperatures, both internally and externally?  I'm just worried about the tape coming off (short term/long term), and then having to pay another $100CAD to courier my 5D3 body back to Canon Canada every time the tape comes off.  Is this solution long-lasting enough for owners who plan to keep using their 5D3 bodies 5-10 years from now?

Lenses / Re: Canon 50mm 1.2L or Canon 85mm 1.2L?

Have you considered buying a used copy of either lens?  That usually alleviates fears of losing value on the lens should a new version be release shortly after your purchase.  I bought my 85 1.2 used for $1800 CAD and it's in mint condition.  I've seen some mint copies on Kijiji for as little as $1600 CAD.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 5D MKIII vs 1Ds MKIII
« on: April 03, 2012, 10:58:18 AM »
I have both the 1Ds3 and the 5d3.  I highly recommend getting the 5d3 over the 1ds3.  It's just more responsive and the IQ is better.  If you are used to shooting the 40d without the battery grip, you may appreciate the form factor of the 5d3 over the 1ds3 as well.  Higher fps, better sensor, better AF, better ergonomics in my opinion.  As for battery life... yes the lp-e4 charge lasts longer than the lp-e6.  Just carry an extra lp-e6.  Unless you need extreme weather sealing and ruggedness, skip the 1ds3 and get the 5d3.  And don't underestimate the value of the Silent Shooting mode of the 5d3, it really is super quiet.  I'm sure I don't have to elaborate on the many applications of the silent mode.

Lenses / Re: advice re lenses for travel photography
« on: April 02, 2012, 01:37:35 PM »
My travel kit consists of a t3i, 15-85mm, and a 50mm 1.4.  I like the compact and light weight 15-85mm for travelling.  It's great for outdoor photography where light is usually plentiful.  If I'm indoors, and flash is permitted then the use of the t3i's flash is convenient with the 15-85mm.  If flash is not permitted, I'll swap the 15-85mm out and put the 50mm 1.4 on and shoot with ambient light.  My travel kit has to be compact and light.  I think the 3 pieces of equipment that I just listed meet those two criterias.

I'll also pack an S100 in case a situation arises where it's not sensible to bring along my t3i.  I've recently added a Fuji x100 and a Fuji X-Pro 1 with a 35mm 1.4 lens to my collection.  I have a few trips coming up (NY and Montreal F1 Race) where I plan to test both Fuji's abilities to serve as a travel kit.

Although I also own a 1Ds3 and a 5d3, for me, it's about compactness and light weight for travel.  Just one opinion though... I hope this helps.
