Lenses / Re: $1000 .. what to buy
« on: June 17, 2013, 01:17:48 PM »
Wild card time....   Could I suggest a Lensbaby with the accessory kit - £225 ish will get you a manual selective focus lens, wide (30mm) and tele (80mm) screw in optics, a +4 and +10 macro filters, a set of creative aperture disks and a whole load of fun photography !  Add a fisheye for another £100, other optics to take your fancy...

It's not totally macro, but will extend your photographic options and enjoyment

EOS Bodies / Re: SL1 as a "travel" body

EOS-M with a 22mm pancake - it slips in a pocket, it's hidable in less than safe places, it looks like a cheap compact at a quick glance.  I carry mine all the time, swap to small jpg mode for work photos, back to raw when I need it, swap to manual focus when light is poor, it's a great little camera that is just with you all the time...  Although not quite as handy as my iPhone for quick snaps

Bad news: A camera is only as good as the glass you stick on the front of it.

Good news: My 18 year old 28-70 2.8L works a treat on my 5D2 and 5D3. Ultra-sharp.

You might find that you get MORE out of your L lenses with a full frame.

+1  the best statement I've read on here for ages

It's easy to get drawn into the new gear bug, your photography will change by moving to a 5D3, it won't get worse though.  The 28-80mm 2.8-4 will remain a fantastic lens, you may find that you don't need anything more.

If you want to cut your costs, look at just a 6D body, the images it creates are top line, the 28-80 will work a treat on it, otherwise, buy either kit, try the 24-105 and if you like the 24-105 better, sell the 28-80 and vise versa

Lenses / Re: 24-70 f/4L IS vs 24-105L
« on: June 15, 2013, 10:19:37 AM »
Just an observation...   In the last year, my local independent camera shop has had just one 24-105 lens for sale second hand, yet in the last couple of months, they have had three 24-70 f4's - not scientific, but considering the considerable number of 24-105's out there vs the 24-70 f4, perhaps 50-100x the number, I'd expect more 24-105's being traded second hand.

I like the idea of the 24-70 f4, feels nice to handle, but can't help but think, the extra 35mm reach and lower price of the 24-105  is getting in the way of massive sales of 24-70 f4's

I like ultrawide, but like some flexibilty with walkaround and telephoto.... For £2000 in the UK, I'd either look at getting a 16-355 II for £900 secondhand, with a secondhand £250 kit 28-135 as a stopgap and 135mm secondhand for £650, a lens baby, plus some filters, alternatively if I was buying new, then probably the 17-35, 35IS & 100IS Macro, plus some filters...

I'm still of the opinion that the days of the 24-105mm are numbered, with something like a 24-135mm replacing it at a price somewhere between the 2.8 & 4.0 versions if the 24-70mm.  I'd really like a longer reach from my walk around lens, but wanted the 2.8 ability more than reach when I got my 24-70 2.8.

I played with both the 24-105 and 24-70 f4 recently and with a few minutes of casual shop use, found the 24-70 handled nicer than the 24-105 - I used to have a 15-85 on a 450D, so currently finding my 6D & 24-70 f2.8 a real heft, which is why I also bought a EOS-M & 22mm.

The 24-70 f4 is slowly dropping in price and worth checking the cash back deals

Get the Canon 2.8 (non IS). Or, for what you do, try out the 135L f/2.

+2...I bought 135L few weeks ago. It's awesome ;)

At risk of nesting quotes...

+3 on the 135L - also works great with the 1.4x extender

Lenses / Re: Sell non L primes to get 24-70LII
« on: June 12, 2013, 02:38:49 AM »
Personally - if you "have" to sell all that gear to get the 24-70 II then you can't afford it :-/

The 24-70 II is a great lens with great focal length flexibility, but without a camera that's exceptional in dark conditions - read 6D, 5D3, 1DX - you may struggle with low light images - check how many of your favourites are below f2.8 before making any change

i have the B+W 3.0 ND 110 Filter

magenta cast all over

I get a yellow brown tint with my B&W 3.0 ND - pondering if this is a slightly different glass to mine - conversely I get a more attractive blue tint with my Dorr 10x stop filter.

EOS-M / Re: FF EOS-M?
« on: June 09, 2013, 05:59:03 AM »
My opinion: (1) FF is a marketing gimmick to sell over-priced cameras; and (2) the 100D should have been a mirrorless camera, similar to the Panasonic G6 or GH3.

Absolutely !   FF mirrorless at this time misses the major sales advantage - the reduction in size of the camera, the 100D would have been an ideal starter, but perhaps Canon don't feel that EVF/AF tech is good enough at the price for the 100D.

I don't doubt that FF mirrorless will come to the EOS entry/mid/pro ranges at some point in the future, probably with mirrored DSLR's becoming obsolete in the range in the next 5-15 year timeframe depending on how quickly EVF and the associated AF technologies develop.

EOS-M / Re: How many people actually like the EOS-M?

Rolls eyes...   Another EOS-M is pants thread !

If you don't like it, don't buy it....   I like it, bought it....    Getting some great memories from the photos I take with it...

The end ;-)

The battery in my 6D lasts me days when on holiday taking loads of photos - easily get over 800 shots off before starting to worry about a recharge - I'm staggered when people talk about having "several" in their kit bag !  What ya doing with them, powering a full flash studio ;-)

EOS-M / Re: EF-M 11-22 / 4-5.6 IS STM - officially announced
« on: June 06, 2013, 05:30:13 PM »
Can't really see the specials being brought to market by Canon, what I can imagine though, are a fast normal prime something in the 35-40mm region with f1.4 glass, a telephoto 55-150mm perhaps, plus a do it all 18-100mm perhaps.  I'm hopeful that Lensbaby bring out a mount, that will feed a small niche market of selective focus, fisheye and perhaps even follow the micro 4/3rds example of tilt shift !

Other than that, I eventually see a three body lineup, entry (plastic body), mid (where the EOS-M is now) and higher end (slightly bigger body, evf, perhaps even tilt screen and built in wifi/gps.

All photography is prohibited in many larger churches such as St Paul's and Sacre Coeur out of respect to people during prayer
