With the upcoming 5D MK III firmware upgrade, I plan to invest in an external recorder. I do a lot of VFX and some green screen work, so the ability to record in ProRes will be helpful.

I have been doing some research on the recorders and have read this series of blogs:

http://hdslrnow.com/

Can anyone share their thoughts /experiences / recommendations on a recorder from the standpoint of hands on experience? I do not necessarily need a unit that has a monitor (as I own both the smallHD DP4 and DP6), so that is not a necessity.  I have read the the AJA Ki Pro Mini gets very high marks.

Caveat Emptor (i.e., "let the buyer beware") -- @HDSLRnow on Twitter https://twitter.com/HDSLRnow is reporting that some customers are receiving grey market bodies and missing accessories from this Ebay seller...  :(

Canon is a Japanese company. I am not sure they understand Thanksgiving and Black Friday, other than sales go up on those days.

Canon is a global company. They employ marketing experts and advertising agencies around the world -- and in the US.

They understand Thanksgiving and Black Friday and to imply anything else is condescending and ridiculous.

You are budgeting regular street price fir the MK III.

This can be had for much less from authorized Canon dealers if you can time your purchase. Beach just had a $2899 sale last weekend, which would save you $600 which you could free up additional funds for your purchases.

To avoid lowballers, I include a line in my listings to the effect of "price is firm".

My standard CL signature:

Price is firm, local sale only, cash only. Calls only, no emails  :)

When technology is involved in any creation, the quality of the required tool(s) do matter.

Thats not to say lesser tools cannot produce a quality product. You might be able to build a decent birdhouse with a hammer that has a broken handle and a saw with half its teeth missing ... but using a new hammer and saw probably would have resulted in a better birdhouse.

Wouldn't you want faster shutter speeds than these for handheld shooting? Not only for your own tiny movements holding the camera, but also the fact as pointed out -- these people are often crocked and moving  as well?

EOS Bodies / Re: Comparing 6D with 5D3

The relative "bang for the buck" in Canon-land is getting better for the 6d since the 5d3 price is rising,...

"The 5D3 price is rising"?

Gee, I wonder then how I bought one from Adorama for $750 off the list price a little over a week ago....?

The 5D3 will go nowhere but down in price - due to market competition, better value/more functionality in lower priced cameras, too high of a release price etc. etc. --- market factors we have already seen.

... maybe I'm just being pedantic?

Cheers,

Mark.

Not pedantic, but quite possibly abstruse or perhaps pedagogic or possibly punctilious or even sententious.

But no, not pedantic ... ;D

Headphone Jack:  6D NO  5D3 YES = Buy the 5D3

The 5D3 contains a fast CF slot and a slow SD slot which doesn't support (UHS) ultra high speed. If you have a cards in each slot, the camera defaults to the slower SD card. The Lexar 1000x Pro CF card will clear your buffer @ 90mb per sec or higher.

Costly media no doubt, but well worth the investment in order to fully utilize the abilities of the camera you paid for. ;)

EOS Bodies / Looking for a high quality reflector holder
« on: August 11, 2012, 01:19:49 PM »
Can anyone recommend a reflector holder for both in-studio and on-location use?

I have tried one of the cheaper versions with the tiny little mounting points and have returned it.

I am now considering the Impact Telescopic Collapsible Reflector Holder for $47, due to the size of the clamps.

Any help would be appreciated  :).
