Mt Spokane, thanks so much for your input. I was able to download the latest DNG converter from Adobe, and got it to work just fine. As always, I appreciate your input as well as those of the many contributors to this forum. Thanks, All! BTW, I'm loving the 5D mark lll. My 7D is going to be sitting on the shelf for a while.

Canon-convert, thanks for your reply. Are you using windows 7 or 8 or Mac? I'm using Windows XP which doesn't support LR4. I may just have to upgrade to at least windows 7 and then get LR4, too. $$

I took some photos today with my new 5D Mark 111, and couldn’t wait to import them into Lightroom. When I tried to import the files I got this message; “Preview unavailable for this file”. I’m currently using Lightroom version 3, and just updated it to version 3.6. Note: I mostly shoot in RAW format.
Now, I’m noticing that there is a different kind of CR2 file, with the 5D, which appears something like this; “RV3A0101.CR2”. Lightroom 3 doesn’t seem to recognize this file format. Before, when importing from my 7D, I got raw files that were named like this; “IMG_5246.CR2”, which Lightroom did recognize. If anyone has any insight into this “RV” file format or has encountered this issue and resolved it, I would really appreciate your help. Thanks

Yep, Live View is the way to go for manual focusing. I pop into live view, zoom all the way in on what I want to focus on, then manually focus until it's sharp. Then drop out of live view.
@ friedmud; I'd also like to say thanks for your insights. My, (limited), understanding is that when Live View is activated, the mirror automatically moves into the UP position. My questions are, (1) is there an advantage to dropping out of Live View before taking the shot as opposed to staying in it and taking the shot, and (2) does the mirror remain in the UP position after dropping out of Live View.? I assume that the mirror remains up until the shutter is released, but being somewhat new to the use of mirror lock up, I’m just seeking correct information or confirmation. Thanks, in advance.

I purchased the 70-300L IS 4-5.6 over the 70-200’s simply because I wanted the added reach it offers with a crop sensor. Also, for me, it seemed the practical choice; taking cost, quality, and versatility into consideration.
I have been pleased with its performance, and I’ll let the photos posted here speak for the IQ of this lens.
As far as balance in the hand goes, it was a bit front heavy when used with my Rebel T1i. However, after upgrading to a 7D it balances beautifully. Have fun choosing!

I appreciate all of the shared knowledge and insights exchanged here. I’ve learned a lot from reading many of your posts.
First, I Recently bought a 7D to replace my Rebel T1i. I thought it might be the best “all around” camera for me at this time. (Looking forward to FF in the future.)
Now, I’m looking to add two more lenses to my gear before budget restraints prevail. I’ve decided on the Tokina 11-16 2.8 for my widest angle shots, but does anyone have any recommendations for an “all around” Macro lens which could be used in conjunction with a Kenko 1.4x Teleplus pro 300, if needed? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
You know, with the increasing cost of lenses, and as I gradually pursue better ones, eventually I can see myself going to “L” in a hand basket.
