Canon General / To take on a partner or not?
« on: October 23, 2012, 08:18:02 AM »
Hi everyone, thanks for previous helpful replies to questions I've had :)

My next one is this: In my recently set-up photography studio, should I take on a friend as a business partner?

Here's the background: we're both relatively new to being paid for our photography, and the potential partner is roughly my age, has roughly the same photographic skills and experience (but is probably more experienced in some areas), and is very extroverted (in a good way). Costs are not an issue at the moment (due to low rent), and each of us would probably only be able to work part-time (due to other commitments). We both have similar photographic goals (i.e. portraiture).

Feel free to ask more specific questions about the situation and I'll try to answer them :)

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

Really like the photos - glad you're enjoying the mk iii :)

This could potentially cause a real problem for those who routinely take photos with their lens cap on. Lets not take this lightly(No pun intended.)

Ah the lens cap! No wonder my photos all seem to have been underexposed!

So...um...three of my CF cards in their plastic containers had a bit of a clean in the washing machine...
Should I use them again? Or throw them out? (by the way, they didn't have any photos on them - they were spares)

Great sharpness in the video :)

Pretty funny  :)

I've bought a couple of lenses (each of which cost more than $1000) from the US and on both occasions before they cleared customs in Australia I had to pay an extra 15% in taxes (made up of 10% GST and 5% customs duty) to the courier company. The good news is that they were still significantly cheaper (more than $200) than if I had bought them retail here in Australia.

EOS Bodies / File numbers up to IMG_999999 ?
« on: December 23, 2011, 07:26:26 AM »
This might be a silly question, but does anyone else out there get annoyed at having lots of files with the same name, because file numbering is limited from IMG_0000 to IMG_9999?

Apologies if this is already available on some camera bodies, but could the 1DX number its files from IMG_000000 to  IMG_999999? If there is a problem adding the extra numbers due to the length of the file name, then maybe the letters 'MG' could be left out (e.g. I_000001).

Any thoughts or ideas?

Lenses / Re: Buying lenses, do you listen to your heart or your head?
« on: December 15, 2011, 07:28:33 AM »
Listen to your heart, then go with your head - and when you've made extra money from photos taken with the more sensible lens, buy the fun one you really wanted :)

Learning to juggle helps :)

I would agree with previous replies - two bodies is a great help, and with the RS DR-1 Double Strap from Black Rapid, there are no tangles, which is great

EOS Bodies / All I Want For Christmas is a 5D Mk III...
« on: September 26, 2011, 08:37:45 AM »
So I was thinking...What would it take for Canon to announce a 5D Mk III in time for Christmas? Maybe a few thousand people saying they would be happy to buy one!

I'm in.

Anyone else?

p.s. If you work for Canon and see this post getting lots of replies, please tell your boss!

Australia / Re: Buying Camera gear in Aus? Who do you use?

I've bought a 580EXII and a 500D body from DWI, and have had no problems. Good prices - although they've just gone up $50+ with our falling dollar.

I've also bought a 70-200 2.8 IS II from B and H in the US (on Bryan from the Digital Picture's recommendation) and it's been great. The price (last November - with a rebate offered at the time) has yet to be beaten, and the packaging was excellent.

I've been to DCW in Sydney, and the staff have been helpful and polite (sad to hear about Brisbane in an earlier post), and bought a 50mm 1.8 among other things.

Hope this helps.

A camera and lens that senses when a better camera/lens is nearby and trumps it - by holographically appearing to be a bigger/better/newer version - so the other camera owner has  'lensvy'  :)
