EOS Bodies / Re: Patent: EF 16-35 f/4L, 17-40 f/4L and Others

Just give me a sharp, low distortion wide angle. That's all I ask for.

The 100 f2 is underrated? The last one I tested had so much CA in it I could barely make out the image....ok that's slightly exaggerated but it was a LOT!

Lenses / Re: Should I choose the 70-200 2.8 II?

The EF70-200 2.8L IS II and the EF24-70 2.8L II are the two FINEST zoom lenses EVER MADE. The literally have no equals or competition. They're worth their weight in gold. I can't recommend either of them any higher. I used to love shooting with my fast prime L lenses for their amazing IQ. I literally can't tell you the last time I used any of them.

I LOVE the optical ability of the 24-70 2.8L II but the build quality leaves a lot to be desired.
•The button on the lens hood is malfunctioning and requires that I tape the lens hood to the lens
•One of the rubber grip rings has become stretched and is barely holding on to the lens
•There's a stringy, velvet material that has worked it's way out of the lens barrel now

It's going in tomorrow

Do we know for sure the week doesn't begin on arrival of the item?

Canon General / Re: Canon press event scheduled for August 21st

First thing I see is the cartoonish cloud on the invite. For some reason I seriously doubt this'll be EOS or high-end equipment related. Basing that on nothing more than a hunch. Am I reading too much into it? Apple's press invites usually have a tiny or subtle hint at what the announcement could be about. Has Canon ever used a "cloud" before? Could they be starting up a cloud based image storage service?
I'm rambling now....what say others....?

Lenses / Re: flying with 600f4 or 400f2.8

I fly about four times a month, many airlines have started to actually weigh hand luggage in the hope it is too heavy and you have to pay to check it. Which airline are you using?

Avoid, Southwest, Spirit, AirTran and AA from many destinations, plus any of the multitude of "budget" airlines, total ticket price to actually travel is often way above regular scheduled airlines.

I've never had any airline attempt to weigh my carry on gear and I travel with a LOT of gear. If it can fit in overhead bin you shouldn't have any problems. What you don't want to happen is you get stuck on a small regional sized plane that has limited overhead baggage space because then you'll have to gate check your bag and who knows what can happen to it. You're totally at the mercy of the baggage handlers then. Will they drop it, toss it, lose it....makes me nervous when I'm out of control of my camera bag.

Lenses / Zeiss vs Canon
« on: April 24, 2013, 07:52:04 PM »
Anybody have any side by side comparisons of Zeiss lenses against Canon?
I'm mostly looking for Zeiss 15mm 2.8 to anything wide made by Canon.

Reviews / Re: Review - Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM

It's pretty fascinating to read the reviews for the Sigma but as for a current owner of a 35 1.4L, it would be a cold day in hell before I ever gave my "go to" L lens. It's worth it's weight in gold as far as I'm concerned. I'm happy you guys like the lens but I'll never trade a Canon FOR a Sigma. Not in this lifetime.

Call me a snob but unless the glass is made by Canon, Nikon or Zeiss you're better off without it.

I still shake my head when I see a cheap filter on a premium lens such as the photo posted with the review.

Canon General / Re: Photography magazines

As far as I'm concerned Digital Photo Pro is the gold standard of photo periodicals. Popular Photography makes me puke when I read it. It's nothing but a shill for the advertisers. They wouldn't dare take a manufacturer to task for anything. I'm not saying others mags are going to bash their advertisers, but Digital Photo Pro goes out of their way to write compelling, relevant, and informative articles that don't read like regurgitated manufacturer press releases.

Canon General / Re: Why did you choose Canon?
« on: January 30, 2013, 11:58:50 AM »
I just went with what I knew. We had Canon at my high school yearbook and that was pretty much it. I spent a few years on the dark side but the original 1D was light years ahead of anything Nikon was producing and that was all she wrote and I'll never look back. I'll be with Canon now until the lights are out.
What keeps me WITH Canon, the CPS program is absolutely the best thing going. Fast turnaround times, loaners, being at the sporting events I cover with loaner gear, sending back updated refurb gear instead of repairing something near the end of life....what more can I ask for?
A pro friend of mine who is in the middle of switching from Canon to Nikon just sent in some gear to Nikon for repair.....took weeks to get it back....have fun with that!

Lenses / Re: Canon 85mm f/1.8 vs Other L and non-L Canon Primes
« on: January 17, 2013, 02:22:42 PM »
Clarification, the EF85 1.8 and the EF85 1.2L as far as IQ and AF, they aren't in the same league at all. If you desire AF over IQ go with the 1.8. If you desire IQ over AF go with the 1.2L. Neither one gives both.
Don't get me wrong, the 1.8 has good IQ but it isn't as "stunning" as the 1.2L is.
