Never mind the shooting, IS is great when composing images. I won't buy telelenses without it anymore, and I would not get the 400 for that reason.

But may I ask why, if you haven't more than 85mm of reach, you're not considering one of the 70-200's? Insanely sharp, brilliant IS, about your price range if you choose the f/4IS. With a 1.4TC you have a 280/5.6 IS lens that is only lacking a bit in corner sharpness if you ask me. OK, maybe a little more than a bit if you take a mark II TC... AF speed is significantly lower though.

wildlife (less time) and events outdoors (more time).

I was think EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM for the events and a 300mm or 400mm for wildlife (mostly zoo for now). Any of these three focal lengths i will use.  I'm just not sure.

Are you shooting baseball and doing it mostly in the daylight? Go with the 400mm f/5.6. It will do much better for baseball outdoors.

If you want a general purpose lens, then the 300mm with IS and f/4 would be better. But there is no way to get the same reach out of the 300mm f/4 lens without reducing the image quality significantly below the quality of the raw 400mm lens. In terms of megapixels, the 400mm lens offers about 77% higher resolution at the same distance compared to the 300mm lens, plus a slight sharpness advantage on top of that.

However, unless you are desperate now is probably not the time for either one. I have a feeling that at least one of them will be replaced, perhaps both, with new and much improved versions.

I won't be using this lens (300mm or 400mm) for any sports. 

I do see a noticeable better sharpness in 400mm by ISO 12233.

Does the 400mm f/5.6 not having IS much trouble outdoors if handheld vs 300mm f/4 IS?

I currently own FF and focal lengths 85mm and below

I was looking at Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM and EF 300mm f/4L IS USM to use for outdoor events.  what is your experiences and advice. . . handheld, IQ, aperture difference, IS difference, etc.

I want the 400mm but the f5.6 and having no IS pushes me toward the 300mm.

I don't really see the need for a 28mm f/1.4 unless it is make optically better than the f/1.8 (your talking about Canon?).  Now what about a 28mm f/1.4L?

Since I'll buy a 6d sooner or later, I'll need/want a compatible Android device for eos remote. Trouble is: Canon states that *tablets* are not guaranteed to work - has anyone got something like the Nexus 7 and tried it or are there any other links with experiences on this?

I have the 6d and Nexus 7.  I have used the eos remote app to view and take shots with the 6d.  Compatibility is great. It just works!

Depends...do you need a 200mm lens?

I don't need it, but will use it plenty if I have it. I currently have 28 1.8, 50 1.4, 85 1.8.  The 200L 2.8 will fit nicely.  It gives me good range relative to what I have.

Absolutely, take a punt, brilliant lens.

My first L and one of only two lenses I wish I'd never sold.

I could get good track day, speedway and jetski shots with this on an old xti.

Nicely built, compsct, light, fast, exceptionslly fast focusing with af liniter on.

Works a dream on centre spot af combined with af.

You'll find it a revelation how you'll find zoom rings a distraction after shooting on this lens.

Track BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM as fast as you can, track, track BAM BAM BAM

If I didn't need a zoom for video I'd never have sold mine.

Ask me nice and I'll post some results.

I would tell anybody to try one of these lenses.  I think at one point only the 135 f2 tested sharper, and by a baw-hair.

Get the tripod ring and it handles pans and tilts like its part of you.

I like it.

I would love to see some (great) shots captured with 200L 2.8.

EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM @ just under $800?

I don't own any L glass.  For this price it looks like a good first L lens for my FF camera.

What do you think?

I'm new to AFMA (obviously). Will be nice when 6D comes.

I have a Canon 50mm f/1.4 on my T1i most of the time.  My shots are sharp half of the time. I know this lens is not very sharp wide open, but at f/2.8. I must be moving or something. my subject is not always moving either. Any ideas?

I never said it but I'm on a budget.  $1000 for a lens is too expensive right now for ME.

The Canon 85mm f/1.8 is very nice for the price. The focal length attracts me over the 100mm. The 100mm is a bit better than the 85mm in IQ when wide open but it is also more expensive.

The 85mm is what I will get (price is right).  Thanks Everyone for you input. I now have lenses to look forward to.

Hi Everyone,

My First Post! 

I am going FF to 6D soon (from a Canon Rebel T1i) and currently own the Canon 50mm f/1.4.  I'm looking into getting the Canon 85mm f/1.8 and was wondering how this lens compares (AF, sharpness, contrast, color rendition...) to other Canon lenses:

• EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
• EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM
• EF 100mm f/2 USM
• EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM

I have heard the Canon 135L is GREAT, but the focal length is too long for indoors IMO which is where i will mostly do portrait work, family, kids...At least for a while.

What do you think about the rumored Canon 85mm f/1.8 IS Version?
