I think a raw shooting DSLR is a very different beast to the C100 / C300, and to be honest I don't think many pros will be making the switch.

I wouldn't yet turn up to a pressured commercial shoot with a hack and raw though - asking for problems.

At the moment raw isn't practical for most projects where practicality / routine reliability comes ahead of image quality / art. The C100 is a very different camera to the 5D Mark III ergonomically and that more so than image quality is why pros love it so much. The broadcast ready codec on the C300 is also a big thing and raw is not a broadcast acquisition format because you cannot edit it fast or just drop it into the BBCs news workflow! The amount of data it generates is phenomenal.

I think the Blackmagic Cinema Camera now has a stern rival, but the Cinema EOS stuff plays in a different part of the park.

I won't be shooting my own short film / music videos on C300 now I have this on the 5D Mark III though. I am an image quality junkie and that matters more to me than the practicalities of getting it working smoothly, and delivering a quick commercial project.

It would be great to see an upgrade path for 5D Mark III users.

Serious video pros and amateurs alike need a $3000 camera, for the same reason serious photographers don't want to spend $6500 on a DSLR body. Cost is only not an issue for the bloated film industry. The consumer market is much larger and very sensitive to price.

I actually like the DSLR form factor for video, over a video camera - it has a few advantages. Yes a EF mount large sensor camcorder that sits above the top end consumer camcorder would be nice to handle, but you'd lose some abilities...

- Ability to do stills and video on one assignment without carrying 2 kits
- Swap between stills / video very quickly, almost simultaneously
- Stealth ability, with a DSLR you can blend in like a tourist. With a video camera people are more suspicious
- Small size... If you look at Sony's closest equivalent to a 'C50', the VG30 is a NEX in a huge ugly box

Canon should take the EOS M as a base, put that in a video optimised mirrorless form factor, add plenty of video features and a good focus assist, fix moire and have it priced just above the 5D Mark III. Job done.

The AF seemed to hunt - i.e. go beyond point of focus then backtrack. That wasn't very nice. AF is better with the STM lenses, and silent. I've seen it in action and it is pretty nice.

However the GH2, NEX 7 and E-M5 all offer better image quality and auto-focus in video mode than Canon's offering. I'd avoid the 650D unless you have a massive collection of Canon glass and are using it for stills with the odd video snapshot, which I suspect most people who buy this camera are going to do... For the rest of us, especially filmmakers, it is a disappointment and the 5D Mark III is not that much better apart from the fixed moire. $15,000 is a big step up from the 650D for Cinema EOS line, why can't we have more affordable large sensor video options from Canon?

it's not so bad. the problem is that people were really hoping this camera would rival a scarlett. what are you people thinking? it is primarity designed for stills, not video. the sun is setting on the HDSRL video world with things like the C300, scarlet, etc.

Yes the sun is really setting, apart from for the 99% of people... To whom $16,000 makes for a slightly larger sum of money than the 5D Mark III costs.

DSLR video is not going anywhere dude!

Not until there is a 4K interchangeable lens video camera with large sensor for under $3000 will the masses shifts from DSLR video to that, and when that happens it'll essentially be the same thing anyway!

Just my two cents. And Canon probably won't be a player in that market sub $3000 if they carry on with the lukewarm re-heats!

Canon General / Re: October 26 Event?

This will be the Ron Howard film premiere shot on EOS DSLRs as I predicted last week http://www.eoshd.com/content/4205/new-canon-ron-howard-5d-mark-iii

New York was mentioned as a venue for this premiere way back in the May 2011 press release.

The new Pixma printers will be part of it because the premise of the Ron Howard Imagination project is that they started with a bunch of stills.

The stills form the inspiration for the film.

26th October is the same time the Canon Pro Photo solutions show is held in London and I have heard Canon have a stand reserved for new products there, might be printers might be a DSLR, might be a PowerShot G13, who knows?

But certainly the New York premiere could be a place to unveil the 5D Mark III. I think that it is more likely just a marketing thing though, for existing DSLRs.
