I'm guessing that you wear your camera around your neck!?

I have similar wear off at the lower left side, as I have my camera hanging of a shoulder strap.
It must be from the friction with the clothes.
I was shocked, when I first noticed it(, as my 7D has no such flaws) and I immediately covered it with black duct-tape to keep it from spreading.

First the inferior weather sealing¹, now this, let's see what else is in store for us.

(¹I had a moisture failure in light rain, while my 7D did not complain in the same light rain and the 7D even has endured very heavy rain(for european standards) without a weather sealed lens attached to it. Sad. :|)

For APS-C you should get either 17-55mm or 15-85mm.  I used to have 17-55mm and loved it.  If you don't need F/2.8 go with 15-85mm.  24-105 is not wide enough for APS-C.

I have my 24-105/4 quite often on my 7D(, when my 17-40 is on the 5D) and I never like it.
The available perspectives on that lens just don't feel good on a crop body.

I'd recommend the 15-85 for a crop sensor camera.

I try to keep it short, here's what worked for me:

The first is the most important:
#1 DECLARE YOURSELF A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER. (Not photographer/student/housewife/hooker/photographer or anything like that.)
#1a create a business plan

#2 Shoot everything you can and promote it like mad (blog, direct mailings, leave behinds, business cards).

#3 Don't give away your images for free to _anyone_ (except maybe a charity or non-profit that you really believe in).

#4 Get a different image than the other photogs(like someone mentioned before) - you have to really stand out, in order to be noticed at all. If all the other photogs turn left, turn right. (Obviously that isn't always the best option - you have to get a feeling for it, and even then you'll be wrong 50% of the time.)

#5 Until you get clients that pay for an image with a certain look, shoot what you like, and shoot it a lot.
(As soon as you have a client telling you "I want this type of image", get him/her that image.)

#6 Never make promises you can't keep, and always deliver more than you promised!

#7 GOTO #1

And my favourite: Break the rules, if necessary. (Be extra careful, when breaking rule #3.)

All noise reduction was turned off and I even managed to get one 10sec exposure, before the camera went into tilt mode (and does ever since, if I try to expose for anything longer than 0,7sec @ iso H2).
No lens caps attached.
I thought of the noise too, but the first try went without _any_ problems, after that I shot some more frames at different ISOs (6400-51200) - no problems either.
Only when I went back to ISO 102400 the camera refused to expose properly. And I just tested it one more time: exposures up to 0,7sec no problem at all, 1sec -> tilt.

I'll try to post the image I managed to get out of it later this day.

Technical Support / Problems with ISO 102400 (H2) on 5D3

I am not able to expose for a second or longer on H2 anymore. I managed to get a single 10second exposure and ever since the camera gets stuck in "busy" forever(removed the battery after 2 hours), if I attempt to expose for anything longer than 0,7sec on ISO H2 (102400).
Has anyone similar experiences?

ps. It actually states in the manual that the camera might not record images shot at a combination of high temperatures, high ISOs and long exposures properly, and of course I know that exposures this extreme are not really usable, but I'm still a bit disappointed. I'd love to goof around a bit more.. :[

For the record: The temperature was far from high (3°C).

Another cool feature is the "Register AF point", the way I use it is:
- Customize the AF-ON button to work as Registered AF point (pressing
- Select a focus point
- Press the "AF point selection" button (The one that looks like a cross) and LCD illumination button at the same time
- Move the focus point elsewhere

Now, with the half shutter you use your main focus point, and with the back focus point immediately shift to the stored one 

Pressing AF point selection + ISO speed will reset the storaged focus point

Note:
This will work too with the "Depth of field preview" custom setting that I already posted

pro tip:
unbind focusing from the shutter button and use af-on and * to focus.
getting used to it might take a day or two. but now even my girlfriend agrees.

This issue might be more of an 5D3 issue than a lens one.
I did some night shots yesterday and just now noticed similar issues with my 5D3+24-105, it's almost not visible in the untouched raw file(I didn't notice it, until I accidentaly found it), but once I crank up the dials it becomes clearly visible.
I think it's visible all the time, but at least I couldn't tell until I dialed up almost all the development settings to the max, where I suddenly started to see a white circle in the frame.
Might not be an issue though, as I can't think of a scenario where I'd push the processing to the extend that I did in my tests (trying out new stuff). But if you search for it I'm sure you'll be able to find the white circle too.
Funny that I found this now.. :|

It would be nice if in the future a firmware update could add another selection in the selectable AF point area where it allows only 5 AF points to be selected
the center and the 4 outer points closest to the rule of thirds intersections

this would be sweet to make it very speedy to switch AF point, these are the 5 points I use 90% of the time

anyone else see the benefits of this?

While I absolutely agree with you, setting the AF5:1 to continuos with only crosstype FPs active is a neat little workaround which i use.
It takes a while to get used to it, but now when i have the top left FP selected and want to get to the bottom right, I just tap the joystick up and left.
And if I need the center point (I rarely do), I just push the joystick (while metering), which resets the active FP to the center.
I hope this helps you as much as it is helping me.
Still, the mode you suggested would be alot better, especially if you could set-up up to "5 favourite points" or something like that, because "closest to the thirds" is not what I'm personally looking for in most of my compositions.
