I wanted so badly to believe that this is a sweet old man with too much money and not enough sense and was just looking to give this lens a nice home

The broken English and little bits of photo jargon is what drew me in, but alas, I just can't see anyone throwing 10K out the window, even if they were a billionaire.

There are good deals out there, but I seriously doubt this is the one. I once met someone selling a 300mm f4L IS for $800 in like new condition on Craigslist. We met at a public place (her place of business; a bank). I walked through two feet of snow to get there, she felt bad, and sold me the lens for $700. That's a 50% discount! Lens still produces pretty good images:

I agree with Neuro 100%. The variables involved in creating a great image are far more more numerous than sensor DR. I consider a camera a tool. I have lots of cameras that I use for lots of different situations. The most important variables to me are knowing how to use your camera, being in the right place at the right time, knowing your subject, and executing your shot appropriately (exposure, shutter speed, flash, etc...). I would argue that I couldn't get this shot below with a Nikon b/c I don't have a Nikon camera, I don't own a Nikon lens, and I don't know all the intricacies of how the Nikon system works. However, I have a Canon camera, I have Canon lenses, and I know all the intricacies of how my Canon cameras work. Thus, I feel that I can produce fine images no matter how dated the camera (image was shot with a Canon 20D, iso 100, f8, 1/160s, tripod mounted, 180mm f3.5L, 430 EXII flash, hand-held reflector to help fill shadows).

The 300mm f4L IS is still one of my favorite walk around telephoto lenses. I use it less since getting the 70-200 f2.8L IS II, but it still has a place in my bag.

I just do not understand what is so special about these photos!!!!!!!!!!
I have seen such pictures 20 years ago.

I assume you have never shot a fast-paced action sport? The trick is to turn a fast paced spur of the moment sequence into one emotional, perfectly composed, and perfectly exposed high impact still image that tells the entire story of the sequence. This is pretty tough to do with crappy auto focus and less than 4 frames per second. Can any camera produce more dynamic images? Of course...but not consistently in a fast-paced sports setting. This is why pro sports photographers and photojournalist use 1d series cameras and not Rebels.

By the time I sold my 10D it was worth $150. I gave it to a friend for free. I don't even know what my 20D is worth, but I just put it in my bag for S. Dakota next week, so I guess it doesn't matter. I could probably get about $350 for my 40D these days (it's pretty beat up), but it's still also in my bag, so I guess it doesn't really matter either. My 5Dc probably sells for under $1000 dollars now (also still in my bag). Now...add these numbers up and subtract from their value when purchased new. If you are planning on making money or limiting losses from your original purchase of a camera that you ACTUALLY PLAN ON USING, you are in the wrong business. Unless you have the money, or a new camera will make you MORE money, there is really no reason to upgrade every cycle like Canon would like you to do.
