I have practically stopped using the 7D - if I do it is at iso400 for web type shots - which it is fine for.

Speed vs IQ has been a difficult choice for some time. I am getting a 1DX and hope that the IQ is an improvement over the 1D4 (not that the 1D4 is bad - especially in good light). Whether it gets close to the 1Ds3 is another matter.

A lot of people say that better cameras dont mean better pictures. I can only say better cameras give better pictures when the conditions are harsh

I had a 14 to 40L and was not happy with iq.  IMHO, get a better quality lens.

Assume you mean 17-40.

Needs stopping down to f/8 where it dies give a good IQ

So to those few I often spar with here on this issue, the above is a real world scenario that's not even an extreme example and it'll STILL show up the weakness of Canon's sensor tech some of us complain about.
Hence whey I ask if they shoot (in real world lighting), process, and print. Because if they do, and strive for a nice looking final image, then they will run into this. It's just a fact. 8)

I shoot low iso with a 1DS3 - no patterning in the darks
I shoot to the right
I shoot with a lot of good light

I dont get the problems you describe

I can understand what you are talking about - taking snapshots with a 7D at iso 1600, shooting to the left, big crop and printing on a 16 x 12 will definitely give problems.

You are suggesting that people should buy a camera that will cope with poor  technique,  rushed images and bad the scenario. What you are infact suggesting is a super duper P&S.

Bad news for you - the D800 cant cope with sports and wildlfe, so however good the image is then missing the shot wont compensate - better a poor IQ than missing the shot.

Maybe I shouldnt use macro and closeup interchangeably.  I have the 50mm 1.8 and that is good for closeups (portraits, walk around, etc) but doesnt have a short enough minimum focusing distance to say photograph a 3"x5" index card "closeup".  I can photograph an index card or piece of paper with the 60mm but find myself having to step back or hover at an akward angle sometimes - thus my pondering the 50mm on a ff.  If that makes sense.....

12mm/25mm extension tubes are the obvious answer for that situation

I am happy with it too, but you know how it is, when you get something new you maybe hope it may do the 1/3 stops of 1/640 and 1/800  8)

It is only a minimum -  so in bright light I am often much faster

Dont forget you can dial in min/max ISO too - again full stops. My 1D4 is set for L/6400

Another alternative is to set the Safety shift to TV/AV and shoot on TV

In Tv mode, the Tv/Av Safety Shift behaves the same way only changing the shutter speed instead. For a required exposure of f/1.4 at 1/250th with a lens that can only open up to f/2.8, Safety Shift would cause the camera to drop the shutter speed to 1/60th to insure a proper exposure. Alternatively, an exposure that required an aperture smaller than the lens could produce would result in shortening the shutter speed until the exposure was correct. With Autoiso set then this only shifts when the ISO limit is reached.

This gives you the fine control over the shutter speed

My wife loves her G12

- only interested in recording stuff with 7x5 prints
- finds the 7D + 24-105 'too big and complicated' (even on full auto)
- carries it around in her handbag

She gets some terrific compositions and the IQ on 7x5 is more than good enough

Sounds like you are confusing close up and macro?

Looks like the 1D X's faux manual mode is exactly the same as the 1D Mark IV.  There is a minimum shutter speed you can set in the main menu, however, the fastest in that menu is 1/250s.

If ISO Safety Shift, Min shutter speed to 1/500 or 1/1000, with auto ISO and EC set to whatever you wish.  I would have liked if you can set Min shutter to 1/640 or 1/800.  I can't remember if you can on the 1D4 but I don't think you could; I think it jumped from 1/500 to 1/1000 if I remember correctly.

The 1D4 goes 1/60, 1/125, 1/250,  1/500, 1/1000, 1/2000 as well

I am very happy with that - most of the time I use 1/250 or 1/500 by default.

Nikon had a Sales Increase of 5.6%!!!

You are confusing takings vs profit

APS-C will be used more and more for the compact cameras and less and less for the DSLR

That is the smell of the coffee

Do you shoot?
Do you print?
Do you do ANY post-processing to make your print or screen image look BETTER?!?

If so, then you'd appreciate the value of the extra DR.  After all, especially when printing, you have to compress the DR of the captured scene to very limited effective DR of print media otherwise you have a very contrasty image with blocked up shadows and blown hilites.

Extra DR is pnly usefull if the image is taken with it. For the average image with only 8-10 DR then the possible extra from the D800 is just not used.

Good pp ensures the printing issues are resolved before printing.

Might as well throw some of mine in too...

Those are very nice - different styles, different subject matter - all very good

But...that one stop makes a substantial difference in background blur (~30% thinner DoF at 135mm).  My primary use for the 135L is portraits, where I have control over the subject distance.

That would be a decision factor me to buy both 70-200 and 135.
Thanks for your opinion!

You might like to consider the 200 f/2 - really works for concerts

I agree disagree with those who say why does Canon not just keep selling a 5 year old body?   Because would you buy a 5 year old BMW when Mercedes is selling new cars for the same price?  Sure both are nice cars, but there have been improvements over the last 5 years.  I could almost promise that the 6D will be better than a 5D2 in every way.  Better AF, Better metering, Sensor improvements maybe?, Better LCD, Faster FPS hopefully.  Pop up flash.

Please - no pop up

Please - wireless yes

AF might be the 9pt

LCD will he latest

Same sensoring as 5DIII

1 card slot only

There has to be some differential between 5DIII and the 6D - of course it might be an APS-H version of the 5DIII ...  ;) ;) ;)
