Lenses / Re: Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG Sets New Benchmark for Excellence

I am waiting for an in-depth analysis of focus shift before I plunk down any money.  Once bitten, twice shy.

My money is on:

OMD size, possibly retro looking, weather sealed
EOS M mount
APS-C sensor
On chip PDAF like Fuji X100s
EVF centrally mounted DSLR style
Physical controls, except for ISO
Rotating and flip large rear touch LCD

Lenses / Re: New Sigma 35mm f/1.4 for Canon getting awesome reviews
« on: December 14, 2012, 09:50:20 AM »
Before buying this please wait for a reviewer who understands focus shift and field curvature to weigh in.  Sigma has a horrible track record in regards to these areas.

After my horrible experience with the Sigma 50mm 1.4 I will never touch one of their lenses again.

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Canon EOS 5D Mark III Body is $2999 Most Places

Canadian retailers are charging upwards of $400 more than having the camera shipped from the USA taxes and duties paid.  When I go into Henry's it is a ghost town and they are carrying vary little high end stock.  To compound this B&H sends their large, phone book size, print catalog to all houses in my area (Markham Ontario).

Lenses / Re: New EF-S Lenses Are Coming [CR2]

love my EF-S lenses. All of them. 10-22, 17-55, 60 Macro.
Don't care at all for any of the lenses rumored here.

I had a love / hate relationship with my 17-55.  The performance was absolutely amazing but the lens creep, especially with a polarizing filter attached, made me sell it.

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Sigma 35 f/1.4 DG HSM First Impressions
« on: November 22, 2012, 10:56:44 AM »
After having a horrible time with sigma repair a few years ago, and not being to impressed with their IQ or build, i swore off sigma forever. Looking at their new 35mm, and reading what Roger has said about the apparent sigma company turnaround, and very kind words for this lens, i'm very strongly reconsidering.

in fact, i'd said i'm 90% sure i'll buy this lens in the next week or two. maybe later today. ?

I am very wary of buying Sigma after my horrible copy of the 50mm.  I will wait to see a full review from somebody who understands focus shift, like Lloyd Chambers, before making a decision.

I bet the USB port was included to reduce the number of warranty service requests.  The Sigma 50mm 1.4 has some of the worst focus shift I have ever seen.

Would it have killed them to bring it outside to take a few pictures under daylight and night conditions?  What about tracking of moving subjects?  "35% less buttons" is the most meaningless thing I have ever heard a reviewer say, ever.

My 7D does not have this issue.

I think Canon has to announce something soon to show they have a horse in the race.

I am honestly not surprised, all major camera releases in the last year have delayed due to floods, earthquakes, nuke plants, Godzilla, etc.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Why canon?
« on: January 26, 2012, 11:31:17 AM »
Back when I was buying my first DSLR I went into the camera store with my bag full of Nikon film lenses from my Nikon EM.  I first tried the entry level Nikon cameras and the salesman could not get the camera to work with my legacy lenses.

I tried Canon next and it was a clear winner from the beginning since using old lenses was ruled out at the time.  Now I use my legacy Nikon lenses with an adapter on my Canon bodies.  What is funny is that since then I have used my legacy lenses on a few Nikon DSLR bodies and they work fine, I have no idea what this camera salesman did wrong!

Lenses / Re: What about a new 50/1.4 ??
« on: January 26, 2012, 11:24:35 AM »
Some patents were released/filled, but it's hard to guess if something like new 50 f/1.4 will be released. If you need that focal length then I would suggest to go for Sigma 50 f/1.4 - it's a decent lens and yes it is usable on 1.4 and I think that it has better bokeh.

+1 for the sigma
Real usm, (in my opinion) better bokeh & great IQ at f2.0 and wider. Those are my top 3 reasons for chosing the sigma...

I own the Sigma 50mm and I love it, however realize that it can be a very strange lens.  Many copies (including my own) front focus up close and back focus past 20 feet.  Use the lens in AI-Servo and you can't go wrong.  Make sure you can return the lens from the dealer you buy it from.  Even with all of it's focusing flaws it makes pictures comparable to the 50L, which also has some of the same problems!

Who says this won't focus as fast or faster and better than the 7D?
