Lenses / Re: Official: Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Pancake

Yeah I was surprised by the price as well, it's currently priced in Japan at 23,000 yen which works out to slightly over $200.

Wow... I really don't get Canon's pricing, especially at today's exchange rates.

The EF 16-35L F4 is $1550 USD here in Japan
and the EF-S is $460

America will remain the cheapest place to get lenses.

Interesting, this phone will probably fall into Japanese top end cellphone market which is in the $800-900 USD range.  But This is very interesting, will have to wait to see how it performs.  Felt a little disappointed by the Galaxy S5 only have 2GB of Ram.

What's "Shifutobure"?

"the image blur caused by the imaging device are shifted in parallel (hereinafter, referred to Shifutobure) is generated by the motion or the like of the arms holding the camera"

I don't fully understand it, but it looks like it Image stabilisation is related to hand shake whilst holding the camera.

Bure means shake in Japanese and "shifto" is just "Shift".  I wonder if this is their IS technology for panning shots.

Software & Accessories / Re: Portability: laptops vs desktops

Just run bootcamp on your Mac which will just run windows for you.

I assume you are referring to speed when you say it doesn't handle large files.  You could either buy a new laptop, knowing that the thinner the laptop, the less performance it will have.

If you want to keep your current laptop, I would recommend upgrading to a SSD harddrive if you haven't already and upping your RAM.

I KNOW you didn't like every picture, so stop being lazy!

EOS Bodies / Re: Impact of falling Yen on Prices
« on: April 10, 2013, 07:56:56 AM »
I doubt you'll see any price differences.  It seems that lens prices are determined with an exchange rate when they first come out.  As i have noticed that any new canon product that came out in the last 18 months was roughly the same price in USD and JPY.  However, anything older than that was SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper in the US and more in line with when the the exchange rate was more like 120 yen to the dollar.

I have no hard facts here, just something I've noticed with all the gear I have purchased recently from B&H because it's cheaper than here in Japan.

Software & Accessories / Re: Which cloud storage solution?
« on: February 07, 2013, 02:47:35 AM »
While not what the OP asked, i use 1and1.com's website solution that gives me unlimited data at $7/month.  The only limit is 260,000 files.  Which, in all honesty, if i get close i will just start archivign larges sets of data into a huge zip file.  I get decent upload and download speeds.

The problem with amazon glacier is that if you have less than 500gb of or around there it is worth.  BUt seeing how just after 1 year i'm sitting at 700gb, 1and1 is def. a great solution.

Just installed the latest version of the EOS utility and it finally finds my camera.

Also upgraded to FoCal 1.7.0W and that works as well now.

This is cool to hear, since we have these already in Japan, albeit Nagoya and Tokyo are the only ones I know of.  It's pretty cool that they have classes there and it is a great chance to try out all their lenses to get a feel for something you are about to plop down $2000 on.

The one near me offers free intro classes on how to use the 650D, Macro, Portraits (need to bring a girl with you), and kids photography (must supply own child).

I don't think you can buy anything at the one we have in Nagoya.  I don't think I've even seen a cash register.

I also made the jump from a 550D to the 5Dmk3, and man, I don't know how people don't get frustrated with the triple digit (e.g. 550D) dslrs.

Technical Support / Re: Best Methods For Long Term File Storage ??
« on: November 14, 2012, 07:15:13 PM »
Amazon glacier starts to get expensive as you add more data.  500GB of storage seems to work out to $5 USD a month.  I use 1and1.com as they hook me up with webspace, email addresses, and UNLIMITED webspace for just $7/month.  Just ftp all my pictures up there.  The only limitation is you can't have more than 250,000 files.

I can confirm I am having the same issue.

I am using a HP Z800 workstation (Just in case it matters - Dual Xeon's - X5570, 12GB ECC RAM, Quadro 5000, Intel 320 series SSD, Intel USB2.0).  My Z800 was running Win 7 Pro 64-bit with no issues.  I deleted the partition on my C Drive on my Z800, then formatted it, then clean installed Win 8 Pro 64-Bit.

The 5D Mark III is detected fine in Windows, no errors and listed correctly.

I have tried setting the program as 'run as an administrator'. I have also tried running in all the Compatibility modes.  I have 9 USB ports on the Z800, I have tried all of them.  I have also tried running off a powered USB Hub.  None of these things helped, the issue is still there.

I believe this is likely to be an issue with the Canon software and we will need to wait for an update or new version from Canon.

Happy to be proved wrong of course :)
Since it's work on Windows 7 64-bits, but doesn't in Windows 8 64-bits, I think it's a Windows 8 issue. If I were you, I won't be the first to use any new OS... most OS always have issue during initial released.

By the way, I run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant on my Computer and I was surprise to see that it's mark "Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Professional " as not compatible. If "Microsoft Visual Studio 2010" is not compatible with Windows 8, I wonder how the software it's develop will be able to compatible with Windows 8??

   Have a nice day.

I've been running both VS2010 and VS2012 side by side on windows 8 for a month or two since the RTM came out.  There are have been no issues with it preventing development.

That being said, I did check device manager and there aren't any driver issues, and no exclamation points.

When I hook up the camera windows detects that it is there and opens up the special camera window where i can see the battery left on the camera and how full the memory card is.  I can even launch the EOS utility from there, but it's the EOS utility not picking it up.

My suspicion is that there is *something* hardware wise on my machine blocking access to the camera for the EOS utility.
