EOS Bodies / Re: Download Firmware 1.2.1 link for 5DIII
« on: April 26, 2013, 08:10:59 AM »
So I've found a link to the new firmware... I'm not claiming any responsibility for this, but other people on the site seem to have gone through with it, with good results. Apparently someone got a copy of the new firmware directly from Canon, on a memory stick, when they sent in there camera.

Let me know how you fair with it, if you do decide to try it :)

Happy shooting

Where is the link?

Reviews / Re: Review - Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM
« on: April 25, 2013, 07:58:20 AM »
I had a very long conversation with a friend of mine who received (one week ago) as present for his birthday "all mighty" 35mm 1.4 Sigma.
He is saying that on close subject ( 1m and closer) the lens is amazingly sharp, but if you try to focus on something further than 3m, the the focus is out of control and for him was imposible to micro-adjusted. He likes the lens so bad that he never think to retur it and in the same time is totally frustrated by focusing.

Anyone else had this problem?

My copy was already very sharp on both close ups and longer distances when I received it, and after AF micro adjustment it got even better, with simultaneous improvement on all focus distances. Your friends copy is faulty and he should return it, which shouldn't be a problem as it's only a week old.

According to the OP over at dpreview who got back his camera with Firmware v1.2.1, the AF points do NOT illuminate...

According to your signature you have the 85mm f/1.8, so the 35mm f/1.4 sounds like the right choice.

Canon General / Re: What's your definition of "Pro"?

Would you rather go to bed with a seasoned pro, or a passionate amateur?

My point is that people attach too many positive feelings towards the "professional" tag. To me, it only means that one makes a living doing a particular thing. There are other words to describe skill if that is what you want to.

Not all lens profiles are preloaded in the camera. You can add those through the EOS Utility software in the settings menu when the camera is connected.

Was that it?

Why don't you test it the same way as for stills? Lens cap on and a long shutter time. If you have dead pixels, you'll see them and then they'll likely affect your video too. It's a bit tricky to find a guaranteed way of spotting them in a video clip.

Was a floating dock, so that's why have a bit of blur on the subjects, plus keep my son still for 13 seconds is almost impossible

Somehow that blur adds to the feeling. Love it!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: The Unholy Trinity of Non-L Primes?
« on: October 07, 2012, 05:27:11 AM »
Both the 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.8 are really good value for the money, and I don't hesitate a second to recommend these.

On the wide end it's a bit trickier to find good non-L primes. I have the 28mm 1.8 and while I think it's a great focal length (being in between 24mm and 35mm), it really is a mediocre lens. I haven't tried the 35 2.0, but I frequently use the 40mm 2.8, which is a fantastic little lens considering the price and size!

I don't see any non-L "replacement" for the 135mm 2.0L. Save up for one! It's great, and it's cheap-ish for being an L lens.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Finnish wearing on my 5D Mark III

I also noticed that the paint on my 5DIII is scratched much easier than on my 7D. Especially the edges of the bottom plate (likely when placing the camera on rough surfaces when I don't have a tripod, and tilting and turning it to frame my shot)

I bought mine end of March, but it doesn't look remotely as bad as that pic, but it already looks worse than my much older 7D.

Was having dinner at a restaurant nearby and had the camera with me. As I came out it was already dark and the lights on the other side of the river were not hidden behind smog for a change. Shot handheld with a 17-40 f/4L (so not really ideal conditions), but after straightening it up in LR it came out OK I think.
