Chris,
Glad to see that the 2x extender is working with 70-200 II along with 7D.  I was wondering how the combination would perform, but after seeing these images, it confirms that it works well. Great job!

Lenses / Re: Canon 40mm vs 50mm f/1.4

I have both... For the quality it delivers, can't go wrong with the prices on either one.  I love the light weight of the 40mm.  Essentially, it's a P&S DSLR.

I love the Canon 10-22 on my 7D.  Really it is one of the reason why I am still keeping the 7D after upgrading to FF last year.  I took both my 7D and 5D3 to Hearst Castle two weekend ago and most of my shots were done with the 10-22.  That place was a beauty.  I have not tried the 16-35 yet.

Lenses / Re: Do you still love 24-105L?

It is my most "used" lens.  Has enough focus length to cover most of my needs.  Would love to try our the new 24-70 2.8 II, but for now, this will do.

Lenses / Canon 50 1.4 Focus Ring Not Smooth
« on: April 24, 2013, 02:28:49 PM »
Maybe this has been discussed prior.  With the latest deal, I picked up my first Canon 50 1.4.  In autofocus, it's great.  However, one thing that bothers me is the focus ring... Whether I am focusing manually or full time focus in autofocus, I noticed that there was a friction when I turn the focus ring.  Along with the friction, I can hear some sound as the focus ring turns.  Unlike the 24-105 or 70-200 or the shorty 40 where the focus ring was smooth like fluid and silent, this one has a drag and some sound as though it was rubbing against something.  I realize that the 50 1.4 does not have USM ring type like the other ones.   For instance, without evening turning on the camera, if I hold the camera on one hand and then start turning the focus ring on the lens, I can hear the sound and feel the drag.   Is this normal or is this a bad copy?

Canon General / Re: Why do you do Photography?

It's what keeps me sane...  Like some, I make no money from it.  But with this uncurable hobby, I am able to record every step of my little ones.  I grew up with hardly any pictures and I wish I have had the opportunity to see those pictures then.

I love how the camera/lens can capture an image in a certain way--blur the background away or everything in full  focus... or the sense of tension and motion within the image.  If desired, it can freeze anything in mid-air.  Always looking how I can frame what is before me.

Thanks to all for sharing your wealth of knowledge.  That's why I keep coming back to this forum.  With the feedback I received, Canon 2.0X III it is...  No doubt about it.

Thanks again!

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / Canon 1.4X III vs Canon 2.0X III
« on: April 12, 2013, 02:13:29 PM »
I am looking at both the Canon 1.4X III and Canon 2.0X III.  What I am confused is why they are both at the same price.  Been reading some reviews on the web, but given that both are the same price, which one to choose?  I am aware of the loss of 1 or 2 stops of light as well as image quality being not as sharp.  I have a 7D and 5D3 with  70-200 2.8 II.  I would love the notion of extending the reach to 640mm on my 7D, but I don't know if that means that my image quality would suffer greatly or settle for the 1.4X and be limited to 448mm.  Or I can settle for 280mm or 400mm on my 5D3.  My intent for the extra reach would be for wild life.

Any advise?  Thanks in advance.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS-b Images Leak & a New Kit Lens

I think it could be a fine introductory DSLR and the size may entice a number of more experienced shooters who need/want a smaller form factor. I bet it sells like hotcakes.

+1...  While having the big gun is great... at extended times, the little brother may suffice nicely.

Canon General / Re: your scariest photography moment?

Almost got mugged on Vegas strip.  Was at the north end, taking picture of Stratosphere.  Two guys hanging around the corner of a building.  We were next to a Chinese restaurant building; two workers outside taking break.  As soon as those two workers started going back into the restaurant; the other two guys around the corner starting approaching us.  We shouted to the two asian guys to wait for us.  Don't remember what we said as we clearly didn't speak their language. We grabbed our stuffs (tripod, camera bag, etc..)  and ran into the restaurant.  Had we stayed on the strip, who knows what might happened.  We were there shooting for 10 minutes.  We noticed those two guys because while we were doing our setup, they walked passed us and then just hung around the next building.  We waited until the coast was clear and rushed back into Stratosphere.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Upgrading from Rebel XT
« on: February 11, 2013, 02:33:02 PM »
I also upgraded from Rebel XT to 7D and the difference is night and day.  Didn't know what I was missing out until I got hold of one... I bought it, thinking that since it was so expensive at the time when it first came out, I would return it right before the 90 days period end.  After the first day of shooting my two kids, I said, forget it--I am keeping it.  But I paid full at retail price... the price of being an early adopter.   You are correct that even if 7D2 comes out, the price, it is going to be really high.  The 7D paired with 10-22mm will serve you well for landscape.

On 7D, 30,000.
On 5D3 (beginning of November), 8,000.
Just pictures of family events and my three little ones.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: UPGRADING 7D to FF Please help!!!

If it's within your budget, just go for 5D3 and don't look back.  I have both, but 7D is getting less of the light now.   I love the AF points on the 7D and couldn't settle with anything less, which completely ruled out 5D2 and 6D.  1DX is way out of my price point and would not even consider it until I have some type of photo businesss.  That was my reasoning... Otherwise, I would have been completely satisfied with the 7D.  You will have the best of both world.  Just my two cents.

Neuro,
You are a life-saver.  I contacted Canon Service Repair yesterday and they quoted me for an original estimate of $200.  I don't have any membership with Canon.  Once I sent in the flash and they have done a full evaluation, then they can provide a more concrete estimate, but based on what I told them, $200 is the going rate.

jebrady03,
Likewise, I am in the same boat, but have a little different situation.  I'd been wanting the 50 1.4 for a while, but didn't want to pay full price for it.  Then the 40mm pancake came along last month before Thanksgiving and with the $50 instant saving, I bought it.  Since that time, the prices on the 50 1.4 and 1.8 have come down.  For the build quality, I would go for the 1.4, but since I have the 40mm, I can't justify buying a 50mm for double the price of the 40mm.  Two lenses with 10 mm focal length apart.  If I didn't have the 40mm, it's a no-brainer that I would go with the 1.4 and be done with.

Still not sure what to do, but I might just keep the 40mm.  Either way, can't go wrong with either one.  You can't beat the current deal though.
