I was wondering how I was going to finance a 5DIII then the BMC hit. Now I'll be going with that and doing my photography with my 5DI. I'll probably sell my 550D for peanuts.

EOS Bodies - For Video / Re: The Three Best Lenses for Filmmaking?

I tend to use a selection of Leica R glass with adaptors for EF. Focus throw varies from 270 deg to 330 deg for the 21 f/4 Super Angulon, though I use a Zeiss Flektogon 20 f/2.8 for wide.

TBH I'll be moving to the BMC when it delivers and will have to re-think my lens selection.

If my funds hadn't been so tight I'd have sprung for a FD 24 f/1.4 tghough I couldn't use it on my digital Canons. Mind you, I did think of giving it a go on my old EF.

Just set it up so the wretched thing outputs somewhere near true 1080p resolution.

A 150mbps CBR I-Frame codec would be nice.

A full raster de-moseic of the sensor would certainly give 4:4:4 colour sampling (Not colour *space*, that's something different) as there's plenty of pixels for downsampling

Was saving up for the 5DIII, then something happened. A little something called the Blackmagic Cinema Camera.

Guess who'll get my money now.

Canon really bogged up the much touted video / cine on the 5DIII to the rage of cinephiles everywhere,

There's many a true word....

They seriously need to fix the I-frame codec, and probably the IBP while they're at it. CBR not VBR please.

Oh, and the link provided only works for USA people.

EOS Bodies / Re: Anti-aliasing filter in 1DX

The OLPF is designed to blur the incoming image so as to remove high spacial frequencies which woulc cause interference with the fixed Bayer patern of the sensor

From the Japanese site it looks as if they just took single shots and processed in DPP, instead of a set of subs and stacking in DSS (Which is free).

I can see the improvement in the H-alpha but it's still not the best advert. Why they couldn't have fitted a square cut-off 400-700nm filter beats me, after all Baader and Astronomik do.

I wonder why DPP can't do stacking...

I wonder if back-lighting or sensor cooling would help at all.

Because it's a basic raw converter for "ordinary" photos. Something like DSS is dedicated to stacking raw astrophotos and would be no good for "ordinary" photography. Tools for the job, pick the right one.

Only by removing the back and adding a Peltier cooler and fan, but then you'd lose the LCD.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: DSLR viewfinders

The 7D has a 100% 1.0x viewfinder but it is a crop sensor. I don't think I've ever seen a 1.0x 135 format SLR or DSLR. Comparing my old 5D with my '70s era EF I don't see much difference.

Now, for a really big, bright VF you should really be looking at a Leica R series cam

This is a very interesting cam, but what exactly is the band-pass of the IR blocking filter? Ideally it should extend all the way to the SII line or a bit beyond with a sharp cut-off. Baader and Astronomik do replacement filters like this.

As for no video, I'm in two minds about this, as ideally one would use a dedicated USB or Firewire cam and Registax for planetary imaging. I don't do any astrophotog, myself *yet* partly due to budget crashes, but also the LP where I am in London is pretty dreadfull, seeing down to even mag 4.5 is a spectacularly good night  >:(

With the same old sensor and digic V (Not V+ note) I doubt the video will be any better than the 550D, and certainly not up to the 5DIII, let alone a hacked GH2 at probably less money.

Bummer I really don't want to be doing with smaller-than-C sensors.

EOS Bodies / Re: Videographers happy with 5D Mark III?
« on: March 03, 2012, 01:25:37 PM »
I'm not making any judgements about the video until I see not-further-compressed samples (That I can download and drop into DaVinci Ressolve lite to see how it grades).

But

It could just be my next camera, upgrading from a 5D original and a 550D.

Although no uncompressed HDMI is a bit of a downer losing the ghastly moire and aliasing that bedevils a lot of my shots, which I've even seen on the weave of a solid-colour blouse that one of my actresses was wearing.

I think the C-DSLR will be way north of the 1Dx and hence too far out of my budget to be considered, even with 4K cine.

So yes, on balance I'm happy

EOS Bodies - For Video / Re: Why the hate for video capable DSLRs?
« on: March 03, 2012, 08:41:40 AM »
If it were *only* for video then 2(1930x1080) would be more sensible, but the resolution would have *all* the photographers (Rightly) up in arms in protest, so the fact that the resolution is where it is, shows that Canon have tried to find the best balance of resolution for both camps.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5dmkIII- No video autofocus?
« on: March 02, 2012, 06:03:44 AM »
I for one *do not* want autofocus of any kind in video, I'd rather pull my own focus (If I don't have an AC1 available).

And in any case nearly all my lenses are vintage primes (Mostly Leica R) with manual everything.
