You take a big IQ hit with the doubler.  I rarely use it (2XIII) anymore except on my 70-200 2.8L IS II.  I find I can crop without it and get better IQ.  I believe the added "feature" is not worth all of the hype.  Might prove useful with the video folks where the loss if IQ is also lost in the downscale to HD.  For stills, cropping is still better than using the 2XIII.

That was also my experience with the 70-200mm 2.8IS II. Cropping a 200mm image to match the 2x III 400mm image showed almost no difference. For me it made no sense in having $500 worth of glass sitting in my bag when I could just crop the image instead.

On the other hand the 1.4x II or 1.4x III both show a noticeable improvement over just cropping.

Lenses / Re: Tripod collar for 200mm f/2.8 L?
« on: February 19, 2013, 06:49:57 PM »
Anyone know where I can get one for the 300 2.8 canon?

I don't think you will find a 3rd party option.  How did you get if off the lens? I assumed they were not removable.

Here is the Parts List: http://www.micro-tools.net/pdf/Canon/EF%20300%202.8%20L%20USM.pdf

There is "no stock" on the entire ring, but it looks like parts are available.

Canon General / Re: Why did you choose Canon?

Brand Loyalty ..... In the late 1966 I was 10 years old and started taking photos with my Dad's Kodak Bownie.

He eventually bought me a used Canon Canonet QL19 (35mm film rangefinder)  in 1971 and I have been shooting with only Canon ever since.

My issue is this,

my original 7d and 7d accessory battery which I got from blacks a used to be large Canadian photo place anyhow those batteries when I checked them with the canon counterfeit document on there support site they were or would seem to be counterfeit.

the two which I bought from kijiji guy for 60bucks which I figured to be counterfeits according to there document are real....go figure.

but there is no way in hell you can yell me that 2 or 3 cells with protection etc..should cost mo more than what 20-25 bucks....sell them for 50. Buy no rob your customers....they are like 120 each here.....robbery..

Can you post photos?  The Canon  "counterfeit document" is very poorly written and does little to show the actual differences between real and fake LP-E6 batteries.

Take a look at this thread:

   http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1015287&highlight=lp-e6

All of these are authentic Canon LP-E6 batterries. Do yours look like any of these?

More at f/1.4

I think this FDn 50mm 1.4 is one of the sharpest lenses ever produced and it even wide open at f/1.4 it produces excellent images...........

All wide open at f/1.4

I just finished converting my old FD 50mm 1.4 to an EF mount using the new EdMika Canon FDn-EOS adapter kit.  http://www.ebay.ca/itm/170911278282?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_2239wt_1344

The conversion process is quite easy to do for the average person but you really should watch the how-to video first.
EdMika FDn-EOS kit instructions Small | Large
The video is 12:21 and that is about how long it took me to do the entire conversion.

The kit consists of a really nice precision machined brass mount (fitted with a black sleeve to prevent light scattering) and a small machined peice of brass that is used to engage the aperture control after the old mount is removed.  The mount comes equipped with a "Dandelion" fully programable Auto-Focus confirmation chip. Also included is a EF lens cap.

Here are some photos of the lens after conversion to the EF mount. There is a small indentation for a "lens Mount Index". (mounting alignment mark). I dabbed a bit of red paint on it so it is easier to spot.

Why do you think older FD lenses are better than FDn?

This website's tests seem to show that the FDn 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.8 lenses are better than their older FD versions:  http://web.archive.org/web/20080101211626/http://www.members.aol.com/canonfdlenstests/default.htm

my personal recommendation where value meets amazing imaging is

135mm f/2 - about $350, amazingly sharp, great bokeh even though it has a bit more CA than modern L version.
50mm 1.4 - about $100 bucks, great CA control (less at 1.4 than 1.2 non L set at 1.4) tiny, worthy of "reference lens" title.
24mm f/2 - about $300, also very sharp, shockingly compact and widest distortion free you can get
15mm fisheye - about $500 build quality that even exceeds the TS 35mm 2.8 + 4 very cool internal built in filters

Ed,  how does the FDn 50mm 1.2 compare to the FDn 50mm 1.4 in sharpness and contrast?

thought i have no camera that has screws on the hotshoe.

I think they are always hidden under a plate.

Are those extra contacts on the hot shoe and if so, has anyone else noticed them?

Could that mean that the hot shoe is for something else in addition to a flash?

It looks like two Phillips head screws to me.

You need it to be EF sized, to use the adaptor for all of our EF lenses... which it most certainly will have...

Now.. mirrorless FF?  I think it's unlikely.  You'd have to create another mount.. same flange distance as the EF-M, lenses with larger full frame image circles..  it probably wouldn't be able to use EF-M lenses, unless they do a crop mode like Nikon...

It is not an EF sized mount.  You will need an adapter for two reasons. Increase the flange to sensor distance and also  to physically mount the larger EF or EF-S mount to the smaller EF-M mount.

This is also true when mounting Sony Alpha mount lenses to their Sony E mount NEX cameras.

By my rough calculations the EF-M lens mount would be about 15% smaller than an EF or EF-S mount.

If the 22mm lens fits on a T4i, then T4i + 22mm f2 + 40 f2.8 = great compact lightweight setup.

so canon rumors sources are wrong about aps-c ?

well what a suprise  :D

ps: you are 100% sure you measured the lens cap diameter as 43mm and not the lens diameter as 43mm?

I have used the 53 mm diameter of the EF mount (if it is an EF-Mount in size - position is rotated roughly 15 degree counterclock wise) and got the following result: 21.5 mm sensor width, 1.45 aspect ratio of the blueish-greenish area of the sensor. If they don't have an insane amount of sensor area for other purposes it should be APS-C ... hopefully

By my rough calculations the EF-M lens mount would be about 15% smaller than an EF or EF-S mount and it looks more like a regular 22.3 x 14.9 APS-C sensor rather than the 18.7 x 14mm G1x sensor.

It has already been established that there were two different cameras being used with the 200-400. One was a new unknown (5D MkIII / 5D X / 7D Mk II), and the other was a 1D series.

EF-S lenses are short back focus and will hit the mirror in most cases. Nikon doesn't have that problem apparently.
