EOS Bodies / Re: Shot wedding with 5DIII, dissapointed in AF
« on: January 02, 2013, 01:33:55 PM »
Anything new ?
Even with the last firmware, 5D3 works the same bad way in low light. I still have de 5D2 and it locks faster.
Any answer from Canon ?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 5D3 & 600ex-rt + AF assist beam = slower focus
« on: November 22, 2012, 05:58:53 AM »I'm not so impressed when it comes to low light focusing. The 5D2 still does faster.I am sure this has been discussed before but I just can't figure out why the 5D3 focuses so slowly when the AF assist is enabled on my flash. Many times I have been at a wedding reception and I get frustrated with very slow focusing issues related to the AF assist beam. I have messed around with turning it on and off and there is a very noticeable difference. For example with my 70-200 as long as I find an area of some contrast it will focus almost instantly even dark situations. As soon as I turn it on it sometimes takes a full second or two to lock focus. I remember my 5D2 having improved focus with the AF assist from the 580exII. Is it a flash issue or a camera issue? I know there are a lot of you who have the same problems. Anyone find any solutions? Most of the time I don't need the AF assist but when it is pitch black and I need it it would be nice if I could focus a little faster. I just don't understand how the AF can be so great in almost all situations except this one area. Of course when I call CPS they claim they have never heard of an issue.I was wondering how the camera was set up to shoot, was it in one shot mode or AI servo? Ps have you tried using center point only? I am interested in this set up myself but now am a little unsure i want to until the issue is solved.
The AF assist only works with one shot. I usually use the center point if it is really dark because it works a little better. I would still get the 5D3 and a few 600ex-rt flashes if I were you. They work great considering this one issue which is frustrating but you can work around it fairly easily.

It happens to me too. So sad. I bought it (5D3) for its low light capabilities and I ended up with the old 5D2 in complete darkness. What a shame.

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / Re: Can we all send a complaint to Canon to fix the AF-Assist focusing on the 5D3?
« on: November 12, 2012, 02:08:48 AM »
And I thought that I'm the only one with this problem.
Here too, 5D3 with 600EX-RT focuses slower in the dark with the AF beam.
The rule with full shutter press is working but still anoying, when 5D2 focuses faster in the same conditions with the same 600EX.
So dear Canon could you just upgrade this instead of the price I paid ?

#1 35/1.4 L - Needs more sharpness under 2.0
#2 85/1.8 IS - Make it 1.8 IS with faster AF and keep the 1.2 without IS
#3 50/1.8 IS - The same thing as above
#4 135/2 L IS - A new design with IS and that's all

The big splash would be the new afordable FF body or the highest megapixel body.
For the last few years Canon strategy really sucks; so no more big splash.
If you'd ask me, the big splash would be a new increase of prices.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Best place to buy 5D Mark III
« on: May 22, 2012, 02:43:30 AM »
For the next few days I'll be in the states, New York.
I want to buy the 5D3 and as I can see online there is no store to have it.
Do you know in NY a store to have it ?

Lighting / Re: 600EX RT + transmitter + 5d MK2 Sync speed
« on: May 04, 2012, 02:24:25 AM »
I'm interesed in the next scenarios, how it deals with:
1. 600EX-RT wireless group mode on a 5D2. It works ?
2. Having a 5D2 and a 5D3 both with 600EX-RT and 600EX-RT remotes, is there a chance to work together ? This means if the system with 5D2 is capable to be integrated in the same setup of remotes with a 5D3. Let's say using the group mode on the 5D3 and 5D2 at the same time, or using the group mode on the 5D3 and normal remote radio wireless mode on 5D2.
I have PW and 580s for now and I want to upgrade but keep my 5D2.

I'm very upset about seeing that metering is done in the center and not linked to the AF point.
What's the point with a faster AF if I have to focus and recompose again?!
Why Canon has to do it everytime and let me with a bad taste.
First the 24-70, now the 5D.
Hate you Canon!
Nikon does seem to play a fair game for a few years. They put in their bodies everything they know. The proffesionals before the marketing.

A few things:
The Gr mode doesn't allow more the minus one stop sync with older than 2012 cams. So if it's a 5D2 this means the sync is 1/100.
If you use a 5D2 or 7D you may use ratio mode ore no ratio to benefit from the HSS and sync.
The new RT system doesn't allow 2nd rear curtain (not sure if only in Gr mode).
Take those things with a grain of salt. Until we will get our hands on this is what I know.
The Gr mode is a 5 individual group controlled like Nikon's CLS system only that Canon's is a 5 radio groups. Each group has it's way independently: ETTL or M or off.
For those with studio strobes the 3rd party is the way to go since Canon doesn't provide radio for them.

I'll add having a 600EX-RT on the cam, you have AF assist lamp and radio Gr mode.
If you use PW on the cam with an EX on it, you miss the AC3.

Congrats on being a leader, Syl! Not a bad subset of features compared to your Speedlite wishlist for Canon from a year or two ago!
The form factor of this new 600/STE3 system is similar to the Pocket Wizard Flex/Mini/AC3 alternative I use. All of the shoots you demo would be easily accomplished with the PW system.
From your video, the new 600/ST-E3 offers these advantages over the PW system:
1. A beep when the remote flash is ready (one beep from the ST-E3 when all flashes are ready? or a beep from each flash?)
2. Up to 5 groups (not 3 as in PW)
3. Fancier LCD displays
4. Claimed longer range, although I have used the Flex/Mini system reliably at 120′ and haven’t needed anything longer than that.
whereas the PW system offers these advantages:
1. Works with pre-600 flashes
2. Offers 32 trigger channels, not just 15
3. Works with other PW triggers, making it easy to combine studio strobes with Speedlites.
4. Offers a mechanical flash power dial for each individual group in E-TTL or manual, instead of a single touch-panel.
The biggest missing piece of the puzzle is an under-$100 device that plugs into pre-600 Speedlites and communicates with the new ST-E3 radio transmitter. Those of us who have invested heavily in earlier Speedlites will be reluctant to discard our investment. You reference a combined radio/optical triggering arrangement but I’m dubious about the complexity of a hybrid system.
I'll add having a 600EX-RT on the cam, you have AF assist lamp and radio Gr mode.
If you use PW on the cam with an EX on it, you miss the AC3.

I really hope they don't cripple this again!!
