Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Monopod & Head recommendations
« on: November 12, 2012, 03:36:20 PM »
How much lens do you need to support?

I've previously used a Manfrotto 694CX carbon fiber monopod with the 234 tilt head (and a Wimberley C-12 clamp on top for AS plates).  Sturdy, light, pretty smooth and supports up to a 70-200/2.8 or 100-400 with a gripped body.

I currently have a Really Right Stuff MC-34 carbon fiber monopod with the MH-02 Pro head.  Simply awesome.  Supports my 1D X + 600mm f/4L IS II just fine.

Thanks for the recommendations. I need support for a 70-200, so I think you first suggestion would work for me.

Third Party Manufacturers / Monopod & Head recommendations

What monopod / head combination do you recommend for shooting soccer. I guess I am more concerned with the head attachment. I want something that moves smoothly. I have a cheap monopod that I used this weekend and I am thinking I may need to upgrade. I did not have a head on it, so it did not move very smoothly.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D III with 2X extender on a 2.8 70 - 200 Lens
« on: September 01, 2012, 06:17:54 PM »
Thanks for the quick response. I am shooting pics of my daughter's soccer tournament game today and at the first game i did notice a lag in the focusing. I did not know about the reduction in the AF. I am going to her second game in a few moments and I think I will leave the extender in the hotel room. I kind of regret bringing my FF on this trip. I think next time I will use my crop frame camera.

I cannot find the threads that discussed issues using an extender on a 5D III. It had something to do with aperture 8.0. Can someone refresh my memory on what that the issue was?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Is it safe to shoot my DSLR at the beach?
« on: June 12, 2012, 10:20:30 PM »
I am going on beach vacation in a couple of weeks and want to shoot pictures with my new camera  :). I know not to change lenses while outside to avoid dust inside my camera. However, I am paranoid about using my camera on the beach. Do you advise against taking my camera to the beach or do you have tips on how I can keep my camera clean?

I know that crops are better for sports, but I was wondering if anyone is happy using the Mark 5D III for action shots.

Yes, if the price is not too much higher than $3K. If it is, then maybe I will consider a mark II.

EOS Bodies / The next 5D - 100% VF Feature - What is this good for?

I have only been shooting for about 3 years on a 40D. I am not familiar with this feature. How is this feature beneficial?

Apologies if this has already been questioned and answered. But what are those little yellow boxes for? I can't find anywhere on this site that gives me a clue.

I acted too slowly to take advantage of low price ($70) B&H was offering. I may make the switch if I see prices fall again.

Lenses / Re: Handheld shooting: FF vs. Crop
« on: February 10, 2012, 10:58:14 AM »
(But if you would like have same reach as on crop, you are forced to use longer focal lens = + extender and loss of light or + longer lens and loss of money or some quality depending on quality etc.)

Marekjoz, I have a 2X extender that I don't use with my 70-200 now because I would have to use a monopod. But if I buy a FF and use the 2X extender with a 70 - 200mm lens will i have to use a monopod to avoid camera shake when I handhold the camera?

I guess I was more concerned about camera shake. I am hoping that since the FF is not cropped, it won't be as sensitive to camera shake.

Lenses / Handheld shooting: FF vs. Crop

I am not a big fan of tripods or monopods. I prefer to hand hold my 40D camera, but I know that once you go past a 300mm range you risk blurry shots.

I am considering a FF camera as my next purchase and want to know if there is a difference between hand holding a FF camera and a cropped camera using an IS lens with a long reach.

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM??
« on: February 09, 2012, 02:13:32 PM »
not only CAN you use it, you absolutely SHOULD use it with a FF camera.  the 85mm f/1.8 USM is an excellent lens, great for portrait and event shooting.  I like it on FF far better than I like my 50mm f/1.4 USM for some reason, it's got a little less halation and some more pop to the images at f/1.8 and f/2.

That is good to know. I dont use it much. I have a 2.8 70-200 that I use more. But I may be buying a FF soon and will defintatly try it out with the FF. The price on the 85mm f/1.8 UMS is pretty good too (around $400).

Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking only red rings (L lenses), I did not know about the red dots... :). I see comments about the EF-S, but i have never used one of these before.
