EOS Bodies / Re: Safe to leave lens on camera?
« on: April 22, 2013, 12:52:02 PM »
I don't leave my lens on the camera body just becuase I've read a few stories where someone had their lens on their camera in their bag and they tripped and fell.  They didn't think much of it and when they went to grab their camera out of the bag the lens mount was broken.  Now I doubt that this is a wide spread problem and the lens mount seems very strong but it's just one of those freak things that I'd like to avoid.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D3 Firmware
« on: April 18, 2013, 02:06:23 PM »
I thought the firmware was also supposed address the issue of the AF points not staying lit during low light conditions or getting lost in shadows... didn't see any mention of that on the firmware description page.  I know there was comments made about it affecting the metering but still they said they were going to address the issue back in Spring 2012.

Lenses / Re: New 100-400 to Launch with EOS 7D Mark II [CR2]
« on: April 08, 2013, 01:46:17 PM »
Looking at their recent pricing strategy with the updated 70-200 2.8 and 24-70 2.8 I wouldn't be surprised to see the new 100-400 come in at $2,600-$3,100.  I bought the 70-200 2.8 MII (I did not have the MI version), when the 24-70 MII came out I didn't have funds available at the time to get the MI version and by the time I did they were gone so I waited till I had the funds and got the MII.  I currently have a 100-400 and use it once in a while and won't bother upgrading as mine works just fine and it is rarely used.  Had I already owned the MI versions of the other lenses I more than likely wouldn not have upgraded.

If those do end up being the specs I wouldn't be too surprised.  If they did add the dual slots and 61pt af then the only reason to get the 5DMIII would be for full frame, I think they want a little more seperation than that between the lines.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D Mark II - Light stain on a body!

Maybe try a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, those seem to work on everything.  Someone spray painted a friends car and it took it right off.  Please know I have never tried using a Magic Eraser on a camera body so it may do more harm than good, it is simply a suggestion.

EOS Bodies / Re: Big megapixel camera?
« on: January 29, 2013, 01:30:17 PM »

I sure hope that they price the big MP camera is priced in line with the D800.  At $8-10K, it may be worth my while to switch.

I kind of doubt that because that is the 5D MIII price range, if they did then they would have to dumb down the features in order to not have the two compete with each other which I don't see Canon doing.  I wouldn't be surprised to see it possibly fall between the 5D MIII and the 1DX with the large MP but the specs of the 5D MIII.

Another thing to be aware of is some folks who bought from Ebay dealers reported getting a grey market product... not all of them but some of them.

Since he's not interested in photography, why not just pick up the Canon PowerShot SX50 HS: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/889965-REG/Canon_PowerShot_SX50HS_Digital_Camera.html

50X optical zoom, 24-1200mm, 12.1MP, Full HD 1080p Video, Optical Image Stabilizer and High-Speed Burst HQ for 13fps Shooting.

Considering the 70-200 f/2.8 MII is still at it's launch price of $2,499 (currently there is a $400 rebate so it's $2,099) I don't see the brand new 24-70 falling in price anytime soon.  You may find a deal with non-authorized Canon dealers but the rest have to abide by Canon's MAP pricing.

Lenses / Re: Rebates
« on: November 29, 2012, 01:42:40 PM »
Rebate on the 5D MIII expires 1-5-13, I imagine Canon will extend the other rebates until then... maybe even up the rebate amount?

EOS Bodies / Re: EOS 6D launch and effect on 5D MkII & MKIII
« on: November 29, 2012, 01:04:32 PM »
I don't see the 6D hurting the 5D MIII as the 5D MIII is a more advanced body.  However, I do see the 6D affecting the 5D MII and would be surprised if it continued much longer but it sounds like Canon does intend to keep it around for a while so we'll have to wait and see.  As far as 5D MIII pricing, as of November 1st Canon put in place MAP pricing for all authorized Canon dealers which is the $3,499 minus any rebates Canon has on the body.  You will see other stores advertise below this price but they are not Canon Authorized dealers (and if they are Canon will probably catch them sooner or later), supposedly they still come with a warranty and everything so technically there shouldn't be a risk purchasing from them but as with anything it's a gamble.  Should these non-authorized stores continue to discount the bodies heavily I wouldn't be surprised to see their shipments from Canon to start to shrink in quantity.

The light leak issue was made out to be more of an issue than it really is.  Unless you're taking pictures in pitch black rooms, with the lens cap on or with a flashlight aimed driectly at the top lcd then it won't be an issue.  Even if you do get a camera pre-fix (which is a small piece of tape by the way), you can send it into Canon and they will add the fix.  Don't let a good deal pass you by because of this concern.

EOS Bodies / Re: got a 5d mark iii offer for 2980, jump in or not?
« on: November 14, 2012, 01:34:59 PM »
I'd jump on it.  Canon put in MAP pricing the around the first of November, since they are a Canon authorized dealer they are supposed to be listing at $3,499 minus the $200 rebate so it should be $3,299.  I wouldn't count on Black Friday sales, Canon usually does rebates instead.  The current $200 rebate is set to expire 11-24 I believe.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon 5D Mark III - Price Drop Details
« on: October 30, 2012, 01:59:50 PM »
I think one of the main reasons of the price drop is to be more competitive with the D800.  I was surprised it was $500 more (didn't stop me from pre-ordering one) but I think Canon may have realized people were actually contemplating switching brands over it and sales may have been slower than predicted.  I'd be surprised to see it drop any significant amount from this point.  Usually with the holiday rebates you see the stores raise their prices a little bit to account for rebates should Canon have a rebate on the MIII but I think this is something Canon requires the retailers to do.  Reason I say that is one of the major retailers explained it a year ago and said that Canon had guide lines in place and if you wanted to participate in the rebate program then your prices had to be a certain amount.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 7D Mark II Rumors Surface [CR1]
« on: October 09, 2012, 02:29:09 PM »
This is what will get my check book out:
1. Low noise at low ISO, high ISO capable sensor
2. Same or higher frame rate
3. Same or higher MP- but only if point 1 is satisfied
4. Two CF card slots
5. Same or better AF (5DIII level?)
6. Same or better build quality
This is not too much to ask, and given the rumors of a brand new sensor and the 46MP FF, I am guessing they are more than expected.

It's not going to get the same or better AF than the 5DMIII, that AF system is reserved for the 5D line and the 1DX (1DX has AF features the 5D MIII doesn't).  The AF is what is separating the segments and Canon isn't going to shoot themselves in the foot by putting that AF in the 7D MII.  The 6D entry full frame is only getting 11 AF pts, I could see the 7D MII getting more than that because the 7D MII will be marketed for its action shooting where the 6D is marketed for full frame... no way it's getting the 61 AF pts though.
