Lenses / Re: 16-35mm f/2.8 II vs 24mm f/1.4L II
« on: April 24, 2012, 05:26:02 PM »
I just wanted to say thank you to all who participated in this forum... I decided to go with the majority and get the 16-35mm f/2.8L II .... and what a beauty. Can't wait for this trip. I also bought a gorillapod to take with me. Its going to be an amazing trip and ill for sure post some pics here for you all upon return.

Also, the potential for the 35mm to be updated as well as the 85 due to recent rumours helped me along with my decision since the 16-35 is such a new lens!

Bon shooting!

Lenses / Re: Canon 50 1.4 worth the upgrade?
« on: April 22, 2012, 01:42:27 PM »
I currently have the 50mm f/1.4 and have used it extensively with my 5D mkIII. I do really like this lens, stopped down it gives exceptional sharpness and wide open it has a dreamy look to it. I have considered upgrading to the 50mm f/1.2 L because i find the autofocus on the 50mm f/1.4 is fairly brutal in low light, and this is one of my main uses for it.

Having said that, I've decided to keep the f/1.4 in my bag for now, and instead improve my collection in the wide angle department for the time being.

To answer your question, I've not used the f/1.8 but if what I've described the f/1.4 as being peaks your interest then i suggest you buy it! Used copies you can get for around 300$ CAD, which is really not bad for a lens with such great images stopped down...

Here is a jpeg image from the 50mm f/1.4 on the 5dmkIII taken at f/14 500ISO .4"

Its interesting to me that there are NO votes for the 24mm.... very interesting..

I think I'm going to go with the 16-35mm though, and hold onto my 50mm f/1.4 for this trip. I also think i will pick up the new flash and perhaps the battery grip as well..

Thanks guys!

I am heading to costa rica over the summer and will NOT be bringing my grip. I will bring several batteries and 2 lenses. I am hiling/camping for almost a week so the smaller the better. I ALWAYS have a grip when shooting around town but think it makes the camera to combersome for a trip. Especially if photography is the main purpose of the trip. I would leave the grip at home and grab another lens.

I am bringing my 50d
16-35mm
70-200mm and some weather proofing (ie. plastic bags)

The grip is your choise but I would leave it at home. More cons than pros in my opinion...

I think you've raised a very interesting point and its definitely going to come into play for me. I've always shot without a grip but i just thought it would be a nice addition since i shoot a lot of portraiture.

Why do you bring plastic bags for waterproofing? the 16-35mm L and the 70-200mm L are both water resistant no?

Thanks !!

An interesting comment made by one of my friends, should I perhaps wait until i'm in Japan to buy some of the gear? Will it be any cheaper over there?

Lenses / 16-35mm f/2.8 II vs 24mm f/1.4L II
« on: April 15, 2012, 10:02:15 PM »
I'm currently thinking of divesting my 50mm f/1.4 for a higher quality lens. The 28-300mm covers a lot of lenses, and is great for travel but i need something with a lower f/ value for low light and nice bokah.

I do take a lot of portraiture, and the 50mm is great for that. I'm also considering the 85mm f/1.2 L II USM, and the 50mm f/1.2L...

I'm going on a three week trip in china and japan and am thinking of upgrading before then...

Whats your take?

Got confirmation that my local store has only very very few, not enough to fill pre orders... but I'm #2 on the list! They said they couldn't sell it to me until tomorrow morning since Canon said they weren't allowed? (weird considering our american friends a lot have them!) Anyway, tomorrow will be a glorious day! Get in there and shoot some of this incredible spring weather we're having! ; :D

Well ladies and gentlemen,

The pre orders are in and now we all sit and wait patiently for that (possible?) March 22nd judgement day. Let us know when you get it, or if anything changes.... very exciting times...

PowerShot Cameras / Re: When will we see the first reviews of the G1X
« on: March 05, 2012, 10:14:32 PM »
Just got my hands on a G1X, we bought it as an upgrade for our G12. Haven't had much use yet but my initial impressions are very good. The camera is solid, impeccably built, and seems to function way better then the G12. It rivals my 450D *(rebel XSi) for IQ and ease of use. It looks like this is going to be a great addition to my bag of stuff... and a go to for something that you can stick in a small bag if you don't want the large DSLR for some reason ...
Heres a pic...

If people are interested i can give  a run down of how it is ...or answer specific questions if you have any!

EOS Bodies / Re: 5DIII pre-order thread

I pre-ordered from a local Canon retailer in Montreal, Camtech Photo. They asked for a $100.00 deposit and said I was the third one on their list, that i would be most likely in the 'first batch'

Hoping that my support of local business will pay off and i won't wait much longer then those who ordered from B&H or Henrys!

What was the price @ Camtech?

They said 2800 but they weren't 100% on the price yet. They are going to call me on monday and I will let you know then! (they said they would guarantee they would be lower then any of the online shops)

The official price in Canada is $3799 and this is what I saw at one of the local store in Montreal (Lozeau).  I doubt very much Camtech would be able to sell at any less!...

So sorry guys.... i seem to be tricking my mind recently i keep saying two thousand... when what i mean is three thousand... $3800 was what they said ..... again my apologies for the typo/mistake
