The Canon guy you were talking to is the perfect blue-print salesman, one-eyed as you can get about the product, with persuasive lines yet perhaps somewhat lacking in knowledge of the true needs of photographers and the ways they process RAW files.
I heard a canon rep saying at a B&H seminar that Adobe "reverse-engineers" camera raw, whereas DPP uses the real raw processing algorithm. His view was while LR is getting better with each new edition, it still lags behind DPP, especially in noise processing.

The 24-105 is a victim of it's own succes. Far too economic! Canon will put and end to that!
My guess is 24-105 will be replaced with a 24-120 f4 or f3.5-5.6 in a year or two.

My guess is this will go as a kit lens with Canon 6D. Priced similar to recently announced Nikkor 24-85mm F3.5-4.5G ED VR lens.

Considering today's 35 f/1.4 is already superlative...what, aside from the price tag, will be different with the new one?

b&

Current 35 1.4 does not have any UD elements. This revision should feature UD elements to reduce chromatic aberration.

Thanks for your comments. I have used it for about a week now. I love its size, and focusing - USM is smooth and super-quick. Colors are amazing. There is quite a bit of CA at wide open in contrasty situation, which goes away after 2.2. I think I have found a keeper!

My EOS Rebel G is plastic all the way with 3 focusing points and a FULL FRAME image area!

Good point! A new full-frame DSLR in a Rebel G body wouldn't be any larger than some mirrorless out there.

I had it for a while but sold it. I felt that it's IQ just wasn't very good. Otherwise it's build and handling are very good, just like the 85mm1.8, and 100mmf2. You will come across some people who are fans of this lens, i'm just not one of them. That said i'd still rather have it than the sigma 30mm 1.4.

I better wait and test it myself then. I hope my copy is a good one. I am travelling abroad next month and wanted to use it for street photography.

Lenses / Canon 28 1.8
« on: June 23, 2012, 09:22:53 AM »
Yesterday I impulse bought a 28 1.8 from B&H. Now I am reading these terrible reviews of this lens, especially photozone.de which gave 2 stars for optical quality.  I bought mainly for its f/1.8 and normal view on crop factor. Most reviews points out poor contrast/color, CA, and not being tack sharp from 1.8-2.2. Is this lens that bad? Why would canon sell lens with that many issues at relatively higher price point? Anybody have experience using it? Thanks!

Three things better than 50mm 1.8:
-  Full time manual focus
- 7 circular blades =  great bokeh!
Can you source either of those details? I don't see it in any of the previous rumors on the lens that it would have FTM or any details regarding blades, etc.

Forgive my ignorance, but what's special about this? It's only 10mm wider than the 50 and a stop slower.  :-\

This will be my first pre-order of any canon (2nd of all electronics - 1st was iPad).

Lenses / Re: Canon 8-15mm F4L Fisheye shortage?
« on: June 06, 2012, 11:25:15 PM »
Ok I'm just curious here.  I was watching a new 8-15 fisheye on eBay and it just went for $3996US.  This lens retails for $1500 new, and I was a bit shocked to see the final price.  Is there some sort of shortage or something?   :o ???

It might be that they were bidding for something else, like some sort of 'dirty laundering'!

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / Re: 430EX II Going Out?
« on: March 22, 2012, 09:51:26 AM »
Ahhh yes, the brilliant folks at Best Buy.

It's very unlikely.  Canon will probably discontinue the 580EX II since the 600EX-RT is a replacement, but the 430EX II is a rung down on the ladder.
Is it safe to assume that the price of 580 EX II will go below $400 after 600EX-RT is available this April? I also heard about non RT 600EX. May be it will sell at same price point as current 580EX II.

EOS Bodies - For Video / Re: 5D MKIII and iPad 3rd Gen.
« on: March 12, 2012, 01:09:48 PM »
Currently DSLR Camera Remote HD is the only app that seems to do so, but it requires another computer to act as a bridge. Looking at how much time Apple spent to demonstrate new iPad's photo/video capability during the keynote last week, I find both Apple or Canon missing a large part of the workflow here. Isn't it about time they (Apple/canon or third party) release a direct camera to iPad link, which enables iPad to be used as an external monitor for video recording? Retina display will be awesome for accurate focussing.

How do you know you'd void your warranty w/ magic lantern? The installer only sets the bootable flag in the flash rom, and you can turn it off anytime you want. And even if not, I've never read of anyone in the ml forums who said a warranty repair was refused because of the flag being set.

Great to know this! I m going ahead and installing Magic Lantern. My Saturday project! Thanks!
