Technical Support / Re: Canon 50D Magiclantern

I have always updated my firmware in-camera. If you put the firmware on a freshly formatted card and run the in-camera firmware update it should work. Hope this helps. I did ML the same way.

Havn't been able to get out much since getting my 70-200, but a quick walk on the beach this last weekend (about 5 degrees F, or about -15c, with gusting winds of 30mph) I caught this guy in a tree, didnt let me get very close, but im pretty impressed with how well the heavy crop (<1mp) was, even if I did miss focus a smidge

I'm sorry I did not specify, I hooked it up to my 60 and shot in manual mode. Only a cheap lens on an expensive body. The EXIF data says 50mm because the chip in the extension tube I used reports at 50mm

The worst lens ever! haha
-magnifying glass
-pringles can
-electrical and duct tape
-25mm extension tube for a mount
I dont know which looks worse....
fixed focal length (i would guess about 135mm) but the worst part is the fixed FOCUS distance haha. I've heard of zooming with your feet, but what about focusing?
If i had painted the inside flat black instead of being reflective it probably wouldnt have been that bad

Both my 60D and 70-200 are refurbs. Both looked BRAND new when I got them, except the generic box they come in. I cant remember about my 60D but my lens only took 2 days to ship out.

Taken with a Rebel "g" with a 35-80 4-5.6 iii.  ISO 200 kodak gold film, I paid more for the film than the camera. Camera and lens was $5 at a flea market, but I had to repair the lens, as the internals were cocked sideways and jammed.

Sports / Re: Motion Blur (on purpose) in Sports Photos

I wouldnt call these "showing off" my photos, but I dont have many with motion blur. These are some casual shots of some friends back-yard dirt racing, but a quick thundershower made it slick, and these guys were SLOW. The first shot is 1/60th and the second is 1/30th, any faster than 1/60th and it looked like a bunch of parked junkers haha. I should have brought my ND filter to get the DOF a little shallower

Does anyone know if there is a firmware-type hack for the 60D to alow AFMA? I really wish canon didnt dumb down the 60D

I have sold a few used lenses on E-bay and never had a problem. I bought a used 70-200 f/4L USM (non-IS) from Hunt's photo nearby where I live, and the next day realized about 5% of the time the aperature wouldnt close down (when shot above f/4 obviously), so I had to return the lens, and they had no problems at all with taking it back for a 100% refund. If it had been a craigslist deal I might have had a bigger problem. I did fall in love with the optics, and ended up buying a canon-refurbished 70-200 f/4L IS because of it. Im a big proponent of canon refurbs, my 60D and my 70-200 both seemed brand-new, and I would assume they test the refurbs quite thoroughly.

I own this lens, and am not impressed. the CA is quite strong in almost al instances ( see the 2nd pic in this thread) and there is not enough detail left in any shots to crop. @300mm you have to stop down to f/6.3 or 7.1 to get a decently sharp image. the colors are not all that vibrant either. The USD and VC do work decent. I recently bought a used 70-200 f/4L for $350 that MUCH outperformed the tamron in distant detail, even though it was lacking 100mm. at 200mm f/4 the canon outperformed the tamron hands-down, even at f/6.3. (tripod, iso 100, broad daylight). unfortunately the aperture motor was defective and didn't always close down, and I had to return the L. I now have the 70-200 f/4L IS on the way, and will most definitely be selling the tamron.

Lenses / Re: Bokeh: Good vs. Bad?

the canon 50 f/1.2 has a unique bokeh, which I love. on full frame the bokeh at the edges appears to swirl, really drawing your attention to the center. However I only own the 50 f/1.8 which has good bokeh wide open, but not alot of saturation until f/2.8 and at f/2.8 the bokeh gets ugly if there are any highlights.

1st pic: ef-50 1.8 @1.8 = creamy
2nd: tamron 70-300 @ 70 f/4(wide open) with highlights in background = awful and busy/distracting
3rd: same tamron lens @124mm f/4.5(wide open) without background highlights = not bad

Photography Technique / Re: Photography fail moments !!!

Oh where to begin...
I have done the "potrait" video, just once though!

I have brought the camera to my eye and realized the lens-cap was on, removed the cap and had the shot move/run away/fly away

The 10 second timer has pissed me off more than once with all it's beeping and bologna, and not responding to any button smashing! I have done that one enough times now that I quickly turn the camera off/on and disable it.

Want to snap a quick shot of something in dim lighting, pop-up flash or external enabled, but I am in AV with iso at 100...

Installing ML on my 60D and having it freeze during install so I removed the battery and reinstalled, as ML suggests removing battery to prevent overheating, and then my 60D wouldnt boot at all no matter what.... My heart SANK..... I read the FAQ's and then.... shut my battery door...... hahaha

I thought my sandisk 8GB class 10 went south when it started performing slowly, was doing the same thing during high ISO video mostly. I did a full format (not quick) on my pc and it was fast again. The file system used in SD cards is odd and takes more time to overwrite old data, than to write to a fully cleared card, or something of that sort.
