Lenses / Re: Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 Pancake Coming [CR3]
« on: May 21, 2012, 08:52:12 PM »
I don't think the 40mm pancake is meant for the dSLR. I think its going to be for the soon to be announced Mirrorless camera. What is the point of strapping a pancake lens to a dSLR? That makes as much sense as strapping a 70-200 f/2.8 IS to a small mirrorless camera.

If that is the case, it would stand to reason that the sensor in the mirrorless will either be full framed or perhaps APS-H (1.3x) since that would be fairly close to a 50mm "standard" focal length.

Lenses / Re: Canon 400mm f5.6 L lens - upgrade needed.
« on: March 02, 2012, 01:29:15 PM »
The 400mm f/5.6 is razor sharp even at 5.6. It is definitely sharper than the 100-400mm and the 300mm+1.4xTC. I don't think they will upgrade it because it is geared at being a cheap birding lens. Its light weight for tracking subjects, it doesn't have IS to slow down the AF speed, and you need 1/1000th for BIF anyway. So even with IS, its only going to work on fairly still objects, which isn't what this lens is really made for. The new 100-400mm IS is supposedly going to be as sharp as the 400 f/5.6 in which case you will have an option of getting IS and a zoom at a cost. I hope they don't change this lens. Its great at what it does and its a great price for the IQ and reach that you get.

Lenses / Re: Patent: Canon EF 35 f/2 IS
« on: March 01, 2012, 10:19:55 AM »
These new IS primes are geared towards video. However, if the 35mm f/2 IS was $800 or less, I would snatch one up in a heartbeat. That is of course assuming the following:

1)Its a true USM motor
2)Its very sharp wide open
3)IQ is better than the current cheap prime lineup

I think that would make it a nice alternative to the 35 f/1.4L. $600 less, probably much more compact, and with IS.

Right now Canons offering in that Focal length is pretty slack. The 35 f/2 is noisy, slow, and flimsy. The 28mm f/1.8 has so-so IQ. Sigma is rumoring a 35mm f/1.8 so this new Canon version would probably be in the price range to compete against that as well.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon 7Dmk2 any rumors??
« on: March 01, 2012, 09:04:43 AM »
The only way they could discontinue the 7D is if they had a capable replacement. If the 5D is going to be $3500 (and why would it not be, given the previous one was roughly that much when released ). I shoot a 7D, and I do not see myself shelling out $3500 for a 5D anytime soon, nor do I want to have the glorified Rebel known as the 60D.

The promising thing is that the 5D MK3 is rumored to only do 6fps. This leaves a niche for the 7d MK2 (or whatever it would be called ). It could retain the MP, 19point AF and Frame rate (or a modest bump in frame rate ), but perhaps pick up dual card slots and an upgraded sensor (perhaps the old APS-H sensor with Digic V processor)

Canon is not going to leave the 60D to battle against the D7000 ( Which is clearly a better camera ).

In fact, I think the 60D will be discontinued and the T4i will take its place.
