Lenses / Re: 24-70 II slight clicking sound when zooming
« on: January 22, 2014, 03:40:17 PM »
Like I said earlier in this thread, I am on my fourth copy and finally got a reasonably good one.

Canon has lost my confidence with this lens. Reading peoples' troubles and experiences with this extremely expensive piece of equipment has left such a spurt taste. My own experience with Canon Canada with regards to a repair on my first copy was enough to make me look at competitor brand glass more seriously, even if the image quality isn't quite up to par. At least most of the competitors are offering 5x the warranty for half the cost.

Same here. I spoke to their service center "tech" and they were absolutely clueless.

hi guys,

Just find this thread few a minutes ago. I bought these days a 24-70 2.8 II having the discussed issue: when rotating from 70 to 24mm the zoom ring produces a clinck clinck clinck sound.

everyone watching this movie could confirm?

What's your date code? Mine, purchased recently, begins with 042 and has the exact same issue (tick tick noise when zooming from 70mm to 24mm). In addition the left side of the frame seems to vignette a little more than the right side which could be sign of a decentered  element. Testing so far, most focal lengths seem reasonably sharp at f/2.8 except 24mm. I think that's contrary to what is expected from good copies of 24-70L II.

Shame on Canon. At this price there's still so many copies like this out there. I tried a Tamron 24-70 VC before this and had none of this nonsense. So much for L quality. This one's going back.

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Sigma 50 f/1.4 Art Lens Should be Amazing
« on: January 15, 2014, 12:06:59 PM »
Great news even if they fall short of this ambitious target. I will settle for 50L-type resolution :) Just hope the AF is up to the task. My first 35 Art had erratic AF and a faulty AF motor that died in a couple of days.

The AF on my first copy died within a few days. Second copy was fine.

Great price! Would pick it up if I already didn't have it.

Way to go Sigma! Really looking forward to ART lenses they are coming out with in the near future. The 135/f1.8 OS and 24-70/f2.0 OS would be sweet if the rumors are true.

EOS Bodies - For Video / Re: New 5D3 Firmware Spotted!!!!!!!

Finally! Been waiting for this ever since it was announced. Thanks for sharing the find.

Now I've discovered (as have others) that the low light focusing has serious issues, esp if AF Assist is enabled with a flash.  It can take 3-5 seconds to lock focus in low light like wedding receptions, etc.
I've shot a bunch of wedding receptions with the 5D3 and AF assist enabled on the flash and have had no problem at all.  It is a wonderful camera for wedding receptions.  With or without flash, the low light autofocus is excellent.  If it took 3-5 seconds to lock focus, I would have gotten rid of this camera immediately.  I hope you get that problem resolved.

Same here. Flawless AF performance in low-light so far with or without flash.

Same here. That's a good introductory price on the Sigma. Hopefully it can match/exceed the 35L performance.

The Sigma 35mm is very tempting. I love their 50 and 85 1.4's! I will wait to see some reviews though.

Lighting / Re: Which Phottix RF trigger?
« on: May 16, 2012, 02:45:35 PM »
I have the Strato II Multi and I highly recommend it. Great button layout, build quality, and reliability. Plus it comes in a package with all the different cables you may need.

Lighting / Re: If you have a 5DIII and the Phottix Odins....
« on: April 04, 2012, 01:31:00 PM »
not only that but 580ex2 will fire at 1/8000 sec with HSS turned off at full power

How is this even possible? Is this a documented functionality of the Odin? I ask because even if you mount the 580exII directly on the camera you won't get full-power at 1/8000.

It's not your trigger system, it's the 5D3. This happens with a 580EX II directly on the body as well!

Really? Has anybody else encountered issues with their 580EX and 580EX II with 5D3?

Lenses / Re: EF-S 15-85?

I can definitely recommend 15-85 as a very versatile walk-around lens.. It replaced my kit 17-85 and it is leaps and bounds ahead of the latter in terms of IQ. I'm going to sell it soon only due to going full frame.

Yeah they definitely received more kits than preorders they had. My kit order was in 57xxx and got shipped today.

57xxx for kit has been shipped to Canada w/ tracking #. Seems like there were far fewer kit orders.
