Lenses / Re: What UV filter for new 70-200mm (77mm filter size)?
« on: November 28, 2012, 07:55:55 PM »
+1 on no filter at all.  There are no filters for the front elements of supertelephotos and ultrawides.  Image quality is my top proirity and slapping a $60 on a $3000 lens makes no sense to me.

I got a 1Dx, a WFT-E6 and an ST-E3-RT from the Camera Store in Calgary today.  My serial number was #36 so there aren't that many in North America that have gone out yet.

For what it is worth, I am CPS and heading to London.

The Camera Store in Calgary has received one 1Dx so far.  I am next on the list so I'll let you know when it arrives.  For what it's worth, I am CPS and heading to London.

I really hope you are right.  I would think that Canon would do everything possible to get these in the hands of Olympic photogs.

I was really hoping it would have been ready for the Olympics.  A lens with a range of 200-560 would be really useful, especially when you can't move around a whole lot.

Seems to have the same availability as the 5DIII, 1Dx, BG-E11, 500mm F/4, 600mm F/4, 200-400mm F4, etc. etc. etc.

I see you are using porters.  Take whatever you want.

Hey NWPhil, are you planning on day hikes from Kathmandu/Pokhara or are you going on a trek to Everest or Annapurna base camp?  This will make a huge difference in how you approach this.

Send me some details on your itinerary.

I've been to Nepal and hiked to Annapurna base camp.  Weight is everything, especially if you head into the mountains. It isn't a nice gradual hike up the mountain.  It is up and down and up and down.  Weight will be critical on the way down as well - lots of people get tendonitis in the knees. Remember also that the air will be thin, especially if you are not used to altitude.

That said, minimize the gear.  If I could take one combination of what you have, it would be the 40D and the fisheye.  Because the crop of the 40D is 1.6, the fisheye will be  more of an ultra wide.  You'll want the vistas.  Forget everything else.  I sue the 15 fisheye on my 7D all the time.  Love it.

Stupas, prayer flags, mountains, valleys, will all be great with an ultra wide.

I need to tap into the wealth of knowledge from the canonrumors gang.

I will be doing lots of shooting later this summer with the new 1Dx and 5D3 (hopefully) with the 400mm f/2.8 MK I lens.  I expect that these cameras will easily be able to drive the autofocus on this lens.

My question is with teleconverters.  I have the 1.4x II and figure that will provide excellent results.  Is there any reason to think that the 1.4x III will perform noticably better than the 1.4x II with the older lens?  I could see having the 1.4x II between the newest lenses and bodies not being preferable.

Thanks for any help.

Lenses / Canon 200-400 1.4x for Olympics?
« on: April 20, 2012, 04:23:07 PM »
Any rumors, rumblings, hints or thoughts on the 200-400 being available for the Olympics?  The London Olympics that is....
I would hope Canon is doing everything in their power to get the 200-400 and 1Dx out soon.

Nice pics.  I love this lens for sports, but because you get so close to the action it has taken a beating.  I am disappointed that it has been discontinued.  I ended up buying a second one just today.  I'll probably keep looking for a third.

It is great on full frame but it is also a nice wide lens on the 7D like in the photo below.  I use that all of the time as a second camera with my 1Div with the 70-200 for special events.

Just out of interest: are you buying a 1DX?

Absolutely.  I am really looking forward to it.  I shoot a lot of high speed sports, often in low light, so I am hoping that the AF system of the 1Dx competes.  When I said the D4 and D3s were vastly superior I meant in the area of AF track and high ISO.

I am way too heavily invested in Canon lenses (10+) to consider any other systems now.

This whole thing makes me really nervous.  Canon announces the 1Dx as the new flagship.  Then Nikon announces the D4.  Then Canon announces, and delivers, the 5DIII.  The D4 is out and being reviewed all over the internet.  The 1Dx?  Nothing.  Has Canon found out that the D4 and D3s are still vastly superior?

I have a feeling it will be a game changer or a disaster.  At this point it can't be average, a marginal improvement over the 1DIV.  Why no news?  Canon is pumping the 5DIII so hard that it will certainly cut heavily into 1Dx sales.  All of this makes me very nervous.
