The second number is the GN in feet, 28 meters equals 91.9 feet.

Take your GN in feet and divide it by your subject distance in feet to get your f stop. So if your subject is 10 feet away and you have the flash set to 24mm then you get an f stop of 91.9 feet/10 feet = f9.2. If your flash is set to 200mm then 196.9/10 = f19.7

OK, I get it thanks, so you're just plugging in F = GN/d.  So with GN = 28 and d = 10m, then F = 28/10 = 2.8.  Cool.

It's not immediately clear in the manual's GN chart though that "flash coverage" actually equates to "flash zoom".  Can we actually assume that the flash zoom head is set to the focal length (i.e. the horizontal row labeled "Flash Coverage" in the chart)?

Then from 24mm to 70mm, F=1.67 stops (+1 2/3)
70mm to 200mm,  F=0.52 stop (+1/2)
So of course 24mm to 200mm, F=2.19 stops.

OK, so you're taking the log base 2 of both sides of that formula to solve for F.
But can you tell me where that formula comes from?  All I know is the GN = f * d formula and the Inverse Square Law formula (Intensity = 1 / distance^2).  Would like to know how you derived it.

24mm - GN28m = f2.8 @ 10m and 100 iso
70mm - GN50m = f5.0 @ 10m and 100 iso
200mm - GN60m = f6.0 @ 10m and 100 iso


 24mm - 70mm  = 1 & 2/3 stops
 70mm - 200mm = 1/2 stop

I'm a little unfamiliar with the "GNXXm" nomenclature when it comes to guide numbers.

On p. 115 of the 600EX-RT's manual, I'm seeing, for 1/1 manual flash power:

24mm: "28/91.9"
70mm: "50/164"
200mm: "60/196.9"

I'm going to guess that means 28m (91.9 ft.), 50m (164 ft.), and 60m (196.9 ft.).
Are you saying that by the inverse square law, that directly translates to f/2.8, f/5.0, and f/6.0?
Also, I'm not sure where your statement of "@10m and 100 ISO" comes from.

Lighting / Flash Zoom - Difference in Stops?

Using a 600EX-RT here.  Does anybody know the difference in stops at the center of the light circle created by the flash for:
1) 24mm flash zoom vs 70mm flash zoom?
2) 70mm flash zoom vs 200mm flash zoom?

I've always assumed it was just a 1 stop difference for both (1) and (2), but I can't be sure.  I don't have a light meter and am wondering if anybody has done any actual tests.


I was going by the way my 7D works, that also says live view, silent shot and video. I'm sure it is the same in all shooting modes...

I believe it applies to Live View only.  Keep in mind that in live view and movie modes, the mirror is up and metering is done off the main CMOS image sensor, whereas with VF shooting the dedicated metering sensor in the pentaprism housing is used.  It's logical that the settings would be different. 

I don't think it's possible to change the time metering remains active on the 5DIII, or any body outside the 1-series.  On the 1D X you can fully customize three separate time-outs from 1 s to 60 min – metering and AE lock (default is 6 s), FEC and multispot metering (default is 16 s), and metering after shutter release (default is 2 s).

Any idea how many seconds the metering timeout is in viewfinder mode on the 5D3 if i tap and let go of the half-press shutter or AF back button?  Is it 2 sec like the 1D-X?

I'm reading the 5D3 manual.  It seems to suggest the Metering Timer (default 16 sec.) setting only applies to Live View and video shooting modes (p. 208, 244)?

In Aperture or Shutter priority you can do EC with turning main ring on the back of the camera clockwise or counterclockwise. Try. It should work.

Thanks!  I do remember trying to turn the rear dial and seeing no effect.  I just tried turning the dial while in the process of metering (AF back button held down) and now I see the EC changing.  Cool!

I have a question about the 5D3:
When I'm shooting in Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority, is there a way to dial in Exposure Compensation without taking my eyes off the viewfinder?  The reason I ask is because I can't find a button for EC anywhere on the camera (all I see is a button for Flash Exposure Compensation, which is something else).  The only way I know how to dial in EC right now is by going into the menu or quick menu.


1) HonL is for snoot and reflector for indirected Flash light, and Just very tin package that can carry in our Backpack on the airplane very easy.
2) Roque is  a Varies Spot Light( 16, 25 and 45 Degree of spot light ), That on is great for field/ studio light for hair light or Macro photography , to make the black back ground of high speed flash ( Out of the Camera hot shoe flash).

I don't know if you are aware, but Rogue doesn't just make circular gels for its grid system.  They also make gels that fit traditional speedlights.

My original post was asking for a comparison between Honl's speedlight gel system vs Rogue's speedlight gel system.

Can you not put a piece of gaffer's tape and seal the slit from the inside?

If I were adamant about wanting to buy that particular Home Depot product, that's what I'd do.  I figured there must be better options though.

When I go to your Home Depot link, it pulls up my local store (South Jersey USA) and they show 11 in stock available for pickup.

Yes, it shows 30+ available in my store too.  The item for that SKU has been replaced by another item from another vendor, even though the SKU hasn't changed.  The actual item in the store is not the one in the picture built by Everbilt, but instead one built by Viewtainer (which has the slit).

I didn't realize Tic Tac containers came in sizes big enough to carry a bunch of spiggots, but I'll look into it.

Check your local sporting goods stores as well.  There may be some small box used for tackle that may work for you.

I'm looking for recommendations for small storage containers to hold the spare spigots/studs/screws that I use for light stands.  The container should be small so that it takes up little space in my camera bag.  I actually want something like this:

Unfortunately, Home Depot doesn't actually carry this particular item anymore despite what they say on their website.  I personally confirmed with 3 different local stores and the SKUs were all replaced by another brand called Viewtainer.  The problem with the Viewtainer containers is that the plastic top has a huge slit cut into it (like on a piggy-bank), and so your contents have a high chance of escaping the container when it's bouncing around in your bag.

Maybe I'm using the wrong search terms on, but I can't really find anything like the Everbilt container there either.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

P.S. Surprisingly, Home Depot carries very few options for screw containers.  Almost all of the ones I see in the store are box-typed containers with multiple compartments.  All too big and overkill for fitting in a camera bag.

Best I've found for the 600EX-RT I've found, and tried many.

In the B&H reviews, someone said that their Nikon speedlight's locking pin fits in the hole at the top.  I know that the Canon speedlite pins are sometimes in a slightly different you know if the 600EX-RT's locking pin can also drop into that hole?
