Lenses / Re: New Wide Angles Lenses in 2013 [CR2]

That 14-24 2.8 will likely be awesome, but at my budget I'm more interested in the 16-50 f4L IS.

If the corners are sharp and the price is reasonable (~ 1.3 k) -- I'm in.   :D

We only had three days advance notice of this via rumor.   It looks like Canon is getting better at keeping secrets.

This lens looks like a nice step forward in building an M- ecosystem.

EOS Bodies / Re: 21mp Sensor in the 7D Mark II? [CR1]

They need to hurry up! I can only wait so long as my 40D's resolution isnt cutting it for me anymore and that d7100 from nikon looks amazing.

If the 70D does have 21MP we will have the d7100 to thank.   :)

Sensor size FF = 24x36 = 864sqmm
Sensor size Canon aps-c= 22.2x14.8 = 329sqmm

So a 21 mp APS-c sensor would ramp up to 21*(864/329)= 55 mp.

The ratio of the areas is 2.63.

The game plan is becoming clear, I think...

The 70D will be the 18MP sensor plus Digic 6.

The 7D mkII will at last have the new sensor and Digic 6  (as the 7D was the original rollout of the now ancient 18 mp sensor in 2009.)

The development announcement of the Big MP sensor will have the new technology as well.

That puts me back to square one of keeping an eye peeled for a real good deal on a 6D...  For my own needs I can't see spending 2200 on an aps-c 7D mkII, though I expect a lot of folks will.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon Announces the EOS T5i

New sensor?  New sensor?    We don't need no stinkin' new sensor!   We got Digic 6 coming!

Here is an excerpt from the SX270/280 press release:

"The HS System pairs the new DIGIC 6 processor with a 12.1 Megapixel high-sensitivity CMOS sensor to deliver exceptional images in low light, with minimal blur and noise, as well as wide dynamic range – perfect for capturing shadowy detail as the sun sets on holiday. Using the DIGIC 6 processor and HS System, users can enjoy shooting with incredible ISO sensitivity, up to ISO 6400, with outstanding results."

Canon couldn't be thinking that the same old 18MP sensor will be just fine in the 70D and 7D mkII because of Digic6 ...  could they?    ???

As the press release says: incredible.   (irony intended).

Two really cheap things they could have added: More than three shots for AEB.   An on-board intervalometer.   Cost about zero and would at least given us something.

Oh dear, really hope this 18mp sensor is new and blows the socks off people! Otherwise theres no change.

I cannot imagine anything else but a new sensor...If not, the ISO 25k will look quite weird...;-)

A genuinely improved sensor would be enough to turn my opinion on the T5i right around.   I'm starting to be cautiously optimistic...   ::)     (An image of Lucy pulling away the football just before Charlie Brown is about to kick it comes to mind...)

I don't believe this spec for the t5i unless it has some bonus features like gps (and wifi) not listed in the rumored spec, or if the sensor is somehow significantly improved, though still 18 mp.    Canon is known for warmover models -- but this spec T5i is too close to the T4i even for Canon.    I could believe T5i = T4i + GPS, maybe.

We'll see soon enough and then we can get back to serious rumormongery for the 70D and 7D mkII!

Pretty good value for the money, I'd say.

As small as it is, what this camera needs is a 20mm 2.8 ef-s pancake as a companion lens.

One more random thought: Maybe this is going to be badged the Powershot 100D.

The marketing department strikes again!   :D

OK... if the new entry level below the t4i is going to have the 18mp sensor, then that pretty much signals the 70D and 7D mkII will (finally) have something better.

My speculation is a dual announcement event for the 70d and 7dmkII with a new sensor technology later this spring -- the 70D available immediately, the 7D mkII somewhat later.   But might as well announce them at the same time to keep the 7d mkII crowd from settling for a 70D.

D7100 in the mix: -- let's take a quick first look -- the D7100 packs high level build, the 51 pt AF of the D4, 15 cross sensors, af to f8 -- improved 24MP sensor with no optical low-pass filter --100% pentamirror viewfinder, SD 2-slots ... seems the D7100 covers a lot of the same ground as the 7D mKII -- but at $1200, not $2200!    :-[

« on: February 20, 2013, 11:30:19 PM »
With the D7100 showcasing a 24MP sensor with no optical low-pass filter, it's going to kind of tough for Canon to trot out a 70D with the same old 18 MP sensor one more time.   Even if it does have GPS and wi-fi.   Just sayin'....

Slam in a FF sensor with these MP and this would've been an awesome 5D3!  LOL!

Still, it's a pretty darn nice sports and wildlife shooter. A totally nice and great upgrade to the current 7D.

ISO almost as good as 5D mkIII, so almost almost as good as 6D.   For lowlight: 6D, for action and reach: the 7D mkII specs look great.   I'm really eager to see the details on that new sensor!

Really, imho everyone: lighten up already.    8)
